Absolutely amazing plant. I picked up a couple years ago and now I have a whole forest in the yard. They give a very tropical look and have weathered many overnight freezes.

I've seen these growing outside everywhere in southern California, particularly in L.A. and Santa Barbara that have to be old because some of them are HUGE with large trunks.

Picked up a DEAD one from a friend when she died. Thought I could revive it... I couldn't so I put it out in my woods.
Wouldn't ya know it, I walked thru the woods in the late spring and new sprouts came up so I drug her back in the house!!! :) I was so happy.

You have to remember, they belong to the cactus/succculent wing of plants and they WILL survive. As far as these kinds of plants go, people kill them by giving them too much love(watering, overfertilzing etc.). Given enough water and even poor soil, most just want to be LEFT ALONE!

I have a Yucca Cane plant in my front yard in Florida. It started as a houseplant, but it wasn't getting enough sunlight in my living room despite 2 large windows; I also thought it needed watering lots more frequently than it truly did, so btwn the 2 problems, the leaves began to brown and I could tell it was going to die. I transplanted it without much hope for it--but a prayer anyway! It has thrived, and looks stellar & exotic.

That's amazing! I'm glad it thrived outdoors. Question. ... What kind of brand soil did you soil. Because I planted my in miracle grow housepkant and the trunk fell about 3 times. It's too fluffy I guess, needs a hardy one

    • @Loribyn
      @Loribyn 5 років тому

Pull them off to expose the trunk -- yuccas look much better with the truck showing. You can then shred the dead leaves and use them as mulch on your garden.

A lot of people also use hot wax which then dries and creates the same sealing effect..
In fact, research from the University of Arizona (ag.arizona.edu/yavapai/anr/hort/byg/archive/pruningsealants.html), found that pruning sealers actually obstruct trees’ natural healing power.
Yes, you read that correctly! Tree pruning sealers are bad for your trees because it makes it harder for your tree to heal.
Plus, pruning sealers may trap moisture in the tree, which can encourage wood decay or fungi.
While we need Band-Aids to reduce blood loss and help our wounds heal, trees simply recover differently than us. (blog.davey.com/2016/04/wait-before-you-use-pruning-sealer-on-trees/)
So you are better of just leaving the cut alone to heal itself.
If covering a cut is bad for trees I guess the same would be true for a cut on yucca bark and not to mention other plants too

hello yucca fans. I recently was at ikea and found some broken shoots off a yucca plant. They allowed me to purchase them at fraction of the cost. So now how do I root them? Don’t know how long they have been detached and what contamination of the wound has occurred? How do I proceed? I so want to root these shoots?!?!

It is usually a sign of overwatering. Let it dry out completely between watering. It could also be that your plant need a larger pot.

This is unfortunately the problem with places like UA-cam, there's so many people confidently typing wrong information that goes unchecked. That's why they always tell people not to 'google your symptoms' lol Luckily this is a trivial matter lol its a Yucca.
