1975 Blizzard was so fun Because I was a kid.. But not at first lol.. next day snow drifted so high we could not get out our door's. It was kinda scary lol
We were driving home on 80 from Scottsbluff to Omaha after my grandma's funeral with a U-haul on behind a car with rear-wheel drive, no power brakes no power steering. It was awful! My dad would stop and break the ice off the windshield so he could see. There were no hotel rooms open. My dad, a teamster (CDL license) was used to driving in horrible conditions,. He got us home, but I don't ever want to repeat that. Then we had the tornado in May. It was a rough year.
Even though I was only 5 yrs old, I remember how excited I was to see all that snow. I remember my dad having to climb out a window so that he could clear the snow away from our front door. I will never forget the tornado that happened the same year as well. Worst 6th birthday present ever!
I was going to South HS at the time. By the time they released us it was so bad I couldn't get home. Fortunately I had some relatives who lived a few blocks from the school who I stayed with for three days. Earlier my Uncle had called a local radio station, identified himself as the OPS Superintendent of schools, and told them school was cancelled. It went out over the air, but a short time later OPS called the station to correct it. A DUMB decision by OPS.
Somehow I shoveled out Bellevue College by my self in the following days with one 5 hp snow blower and a shovel. Huge drifts between the buildings and few places to move it to. Somehow I got there from around the 11-Worth cafe as my recollections have dimmed but I was on it the next day.
1975 was not kind to Omaha ❄️🌪
That was a really bad year. Crazy that the bad tornado hit 5 months later.
