      @@itwasaliens I don't know about other countries but in England and Wales, an "attempt", as in attempted murder is still an offence under section 1 of the Criminal Attempts Act 1981 and is therefore an indictable offence which carries a maximum penalty of life imprisonment (the same as the mandatory sentence for murder).

    • @itwasaliens
      @itwasaliens Рік тому +1

      @@peterjf7723 yes but the sentence for just attempted murder isn't very strong.
      Like you could attempt murder by trying to put a poison pill in someone's drink but for whatever reason you were dumb and just put a sugar pill in. Yeah you attempted murder but really all you did was put some sugar in someone's water. What do you think a prison sentence for that should be?

    • @peterjf7723
      @peterjf7723 Рік тому

      @@itwasaliens Well, in England and Wales attempted murder depends on an intention to kill and an overt act towards committing homicide. Attempted murder is only the planning of a murder and acts taken towards it, not the actual killing, which is the murder. This makes the offence very difficult to prove and it is more common for a lesser charge to be preferred under the Offences against the Person Act 1861. However in this story I think there is sufficient evidence for the penalty to be the same as for actual killing. So the perpetrator could face life imprisonment.
      Laws do differ in other countries.
      Attempted murder is the same as the offence of murder in Scottish law, with the only difference being that the victim has not died. Intention can be inferred from the circumstances of the case. As with all common law offences in Scotland, the maximum punishment available is life imprisonment.
      In the United States, where I assume this story is set, a conviction for attempted murder requires a demonstration of an intent to murder, meaning that the perpetrator attempted to murder and failed (e.g. attempted to shoot the victim and missed or shot the victim and the victim survived). The penalty for attempted murder is 9 year imprisonment.
      The mother in law could claim insanity, however a successful insanity defense usually results in many years of mandatory treatment in a mental hospital, it is not a free ride out of jail.

    Okay so MIL kills her. Her father is a sheriff. He would have an immediate autopsy done. Then when the report came in he'd then bring the roof down on MIL's head. Especially after reading the text showing her intent was clear as day. Then MIL was sloppy and just threw the poison in the trash and did not find another way to dispose of it.
    Plus it could have backfired even worse. She could have taken a sip and thought it tasted strange and asked future husband to taste it or another family could have wanted to drink out of that bottle or son could have wanted to drink from it.
    Did she really think she'd get away with it? Did she really think even if she had managed to somehow get away with it that after reading the text messages that her son would just forgive and forget? She lost him either way. MIL thought with her out of the way she'd find a nice girl who would bow down and kiss MIL'S ass and treat her like a goddess her son like a king.

    I was not sure about this story. On the one hand it's still irritating how the main person doesn't stand up for themselves and lets things go on and on. Or they cry and get upset and then Bamboozled!! at the last minute they say they already knew or something.
    On the other hand, it's great to see the spouse stand up to the mom and instead sides with, and protects their spouse.
    MIL was 10 types of psycho, even the voice sounded crazy. It's also good to see the dad not jump to conclusions right away and instead takes the mature approach and asks why she thinks why she thinks certain things about the MIL
    Doing something drastic when upset only leads to more problems.

    There is no such word as “I’s”. “I” is NEVER possessive. In your defense - most Americans don’t know this either.

    “Charlie’s and MY apartment”….. not Charlie and I’s apartment. I’s is not a word! Simple rule: remove the first person in the sentence and see what you’re left with.

    Did the MIL not think ahead at all??? Like hello. A police chiefs daughter who was young and healthy; goes to her future in-laws house (after the MIL has been horrible to her) then suddenly she gets extremely sick after shellfish was in a shepherds pie and then suddenly dies the next night…those are some huge red flags. Also all those texts add more evidence. The truth would have come out fast and she would have still lost her baby boy.
    I’m kinda surprised my ex MIL never tried that with me. She hated me so much she encouraged her son to cheat on me and leave me. And her husband had cheated on her and she never got over that pain but was willing to put me through it.
