    Roosevelt Island has been in use by New York City since the 1800s. It has a long history of different institutions that included a penitentiary, an almshouse, a city hospital, the New York Lunatic Asylum, and the Smallpox Hospital.
    Today Roosevelt Island boasts a quiet community environment. On this island, you will find:
    Franklin D. Roosevelt Four Freedoms State Park
    The ruins of the Smallpox Hospital
    Strecker Memorial Laboratory
    Cornell-Tech campus
    Coler Hospital / NYC Health + Hospitals
    Riverwalk Park
    Meditation Step
    Eleanor’s Pier
    Blackwell House
    The Sanctuary speakeasy-style bistro with beer garden
    Manhattan Park
    Roosevelt Island Lighthouse Park (for picnicking and fishing)
    Sports facilities for baseball, softball, swimming, basketball, tennis, racquetball, soccer, running, biking
    Playfields
    Dog runs
    Commercial Businesses
    Residential apartments
    It has transportation access via the Roosevelt Island Tramway/Tram from the Ed Koch Queensboro Bridge; the NYC Ferry on the East River; the MTA subway F train; or by driving or walking the Roosevelt Island Bridge from Queens.

    The tram to there is so nice! Same price as a subway ride.
    I feel like there're multiple branches for the NYC Lunatic Asylum, like a franchise, if you know what I mean.
    I like how you move from point to point over the map.
    I first visited this island 5-7 years ago when I found a meetup.
    Thanks Thea for getting these footages in person.

      You bet! I think it feels like there are multiple branches because the Bellevue hospital use to be a psychiatric hospital as well.

    I love your videos. I have lived on Long Island all my life I know very little about the city, but your videos make me want to go visit more often. One thing if you don’t mind-I kind of miss seeing your actual face, rather than the animated version of yourself. I wonder how other viewers feel about this?

      Thanks! Yes, I recommend visiting. Especially on a nice day. Using an avatar is 10x easier for me and more sustainable in the long run in making videos. It actually takes a lot of time to set up and film in front of a camera.

    I would have never thought Roosevelt Island had so much to see. I'm adding it to my itinerary. Wish you would do a transportation video. I have been to NYC three times now. Rode subways everywhere. Did the same in San Francisco, Boston, and DC. But being a senior citizen, I find it more and more confusing. I know there are a lot of videos about the MTA, but most are not of good quality and don't explain it very well. And your video on using the ferry, awesome.

    Any idea which subway to take from Brooklyn to reach the tram that goes to Roosevelt Island?

  • @mingle27
    @mingle27 Рік тому

    Do you think that graduate hotel is a good place to stay if you're going to New York for a couple of days? I just covered it and I thought that it looked really cool and the tram was a cool way to just get into the city. But I saw the prices seem to be pretty much in par with the rest of the hotels

    • @UrbanCaffeine
      @UrbanCaffeine  Рік тому

      Hi there. I would assume that The Graduate is a nice hotel in terms of amenities. It has a restaurant bar at one of the higher floors that has a panoramic view of the city. But it's not the most idea for transit. The tram will drop you off an avenue or two away from the nearest subway lines. And taking a cab on and off Roosevelt Island not that easy because there's only one entry/exit point for vehicles which is from Queens. There is the subway, but you only have the F train going through there. So something to think about.

    • @mingle27
      @mingle27 Рік тому

      @@UrbanCaffeine it's actually really really helpful. My initial thought was oh I'll just get to the tram for Manhattan if I were to stay there, take it over walk over to the hotel and then only really stay there when I needed to. Then take the trim back across and take the subway from manhattan. I didn't think about what you said though so that's actually really good information you rock

    Used to work there there’s hardly no crime there cause it’s a very small community but the tent is very expensive and they have only one or 2 affordable housing and the rest as I stated expensive but it’s quiet when I was there don’t know now

      It helps having an unusual last name. People who have my father’s last name living in the U.S. are all related to me in some way. Mostly distant cousins.

    • @adithepr
      @adithepr 2 роки тому

      @@UrbanCaffeine I just want to ask in general, if I rich enough, can I buy someone else house, so I will be the owner of both land and house of my own on this Island? Or is it the law that the land of this island belongs to the NYC state and people can only rent the land from the government?

    • @UrbanCaffeine
      @UrbanCaffeine  2 роки тому +1

      I'm not really sure who owns the land on Roosevelt Island. I know you can buy condos there. And the land that the condo is on is usually owned by the condominium association. Not sure if it's a special case on Roosevelt Island.
