Years and years ago what we used to feed was wheat, barley and oats because that's what we raised in our fields and combined. Then we got milk from a dairy before it was processed that they didn't use for some reason. Made a good mix. I don't think they're going to use that plastic shelter so I would take it out. We made our own feeding troughs. We took 2"x12"x10' for bottom with 2"x8"x10' for sides and of course two end pieces. We feed on one side only. We had the trough by one of the side panels so it was easy to feed them. Also they didn't fight each other as much and had room to eat which is what you want to get them full. I do fermented feed for my chickens. It's great. You may find a hoe effective in stirring. Use it like a plunger. It's easier to scrape stuff off the bottom. You want to get all of the grain wet and mixed. Keep adding water until it is a little liquidy. Extra water won't hurt. Some say you should have water covering the top of the feed to prevent mold. If you stir it at least once a day, mold shouldn't be a problem. Once you get it going, don't use it all up. I wait until I have about one more days feed left, then I add more grain and water. The already fermented feed acts like a starter, and it will ferment the new stuff in a day, so next morning you'll be good to go.
I ferment feed and find a 4 day rotation works amazing i make a bucket a day and use a bucket a day because 4 days is the optimal ferment time from what I have found
It is a perfect idea many of the commercial hog growers in my area have changed to wet/dry feeders and or liquid feed and are showing great results....outdoors...you will have a larger fly/pest problem die to the broke down feed but if you can feed smaller amounts multiple times a day that will decrease the pest problem
Thats how my dad always fed. But you need to add minerals too. They are expensive but a 40lb bag will last at least a summer. Now you still dont want to get your grain wet before you are ready to ferment tho....... We ferment all animal feeds. Even layer mash! Youve never seen happy chickens till you throw them some at least swelled feed
We used to feed our pigs red velvet cake. It was some the Mrs made, it was so bad it wasn't fit for human consumption. Really fattened the pigs up good
Add some yeast, wine or bread to get a good start and not depend on wild yeast strains. I kept several 5g buckets rotating so it didnt get to the point where the pigs were getting drunk. Helps to add some sugar to some grains also. Crazy that people dont do this as a normal process

My dad is 75, and his dad was feeding soured corn and milo to the pigs and chickens before my dad was born and I still feed the hogs the same. Can't beat the flavor of the meat

Hey guys, sounds like a smart idea. The pigs look good. I'm not sure how fast they grow so a temporary fix to use the large feeding trough could be to dig a hole and lower it using the dirt to ramp up around it. Just a thought. I love you guys and your videos. Stay Safe, God Bless.

I don't have experience with using a barrel, so I don't want to steer you wrong. I believe it's a good idea though to have a way to take the pressure off. When I had new iso-weans, or small feeder pigs I would use the water + feed mix to encourage piglets that would begin to reject the feed, or begin to fall behind the others. Just like you say in your video, the water+mix sweetens the feed. When they begin to get larger you may want to lessen the water content and go with more of a drier mixture.
@@oinkoink644 Yes you can, but it will take longer, baking yeast is less aggressive. You will have to proof your yeast before adding it for baking yeast like you would for bread.

Please let us know if you got any mold, I always heard to only soak one day's ration at a time to avoid mold you still get the sprouting but no mold. Also soaking food in a metal barrel with some obvious rust, is that harmful?

We tried mixing some grains and fermenting but it smells so bad now I don’t want to feed it to the pigs. Is it possible for it to sit too long to where it’s not good for them? And what about the mold that grows on top?
Yes it can sit too long! I’ve left a barrel sit for a week and it smelled just shy of hard boil eggs. I hurried through the top 3rd of the barrel and it smelled normal. I usually get the fermented smell at about 3 days, depending on heat. I don’t ever get mold on top, but the mineral and dust creates a gray paste on top. Make sure you’re using plenty of water. I always add water throughout the barrel to keep it runnier than oatmeal. Hope that helps! Wet feed is the way to go in my opinion.
So how much wet weight do you think you feed per pig? I have 2 pigs and I feed them about 10-12 pounds to share twice a day. Is that to much? They eat it all in one sitting about 20-30 minutes of eating time. They are about 10-12 weeks old 65lbs ish each?
I believe 8 pounds per pig is the ideal weight, but we free feed the butcher pigs, so I fill their feeder and keep feed in it (the best I can) which is over feeding and causes waste, but it’s what we have to do to feed all the pigs

Hi guys, not seen your channel before ....just subbed. I saw your comments on Idaho Hillbilly's channel about a knife. I stopped eating meat from Supermarkets about 4 weeks ago, I don't like mass produced meat ... it's pumped up with all kinds of growth hormones, steroids Etc, and Most if not All is raised, transported and slaughtered in an Extremely Inhumane way from what I have found out. I think Homesteaders produce the most Humain meat their is! I don't know any homesteaders here in UK who I can buy meat from, but I would buy from them. In the mean time ...No meat for me! I was going to try RSPCA meat, it's supposed to be Humain meat, but from videos I've seen on UA-cam ....it's does Not look like it is Humain to me, the transporting and the way it's slaughtered looks down right Cruel! It's just my opinion but I think Homesteaders and many Hunters are Way more Humain than the Supermarket chains and transportation companies will Ever be! I also believe that people who have Shares in many of those Supermarkets that Mass Produce Should check their morals, they too are making money off the backs of Many animals whom Suffer for their profits!

I fill 3/4 of a 50 gal drum with feed. And fill it with water to the top. It’s probably around 35-40 gals. One ton lasted about 2 months. It obviously increases as they get bigger...
When you fill the drum and add water how long does it last? How much are you feeding per pig? I am watering the corn but only for 8 to 12 hours. I add a soy meal. This pretty much all that is available from the gins here locally beside cotton seed.
Wayne walker it starts fermenting around 48 hours. The barrel will last about 2 weeks. Wet, they get 3.5lbs 3X a day each. I’ve now started throwing them grass as well. They really putting on size well. I think we’ll be close to 300 lbs by butcher date. I like to try and aim for 275ish.
Do you keep the feed covered in water? Does it not go bad during the 2 weeks you feed it out? From piglet to hog and ready to butcher how many weeks is it taking? Sorry for all the questions but I like what I am seeing and hearing here.

A sheet rock mud mixer and electric drill works great for mixing alot of feed products

I drilled a dime size hole in the top of the barrel lid so any pressure can escape and not build. Is that ok or do I need to seal it completely?

Have you thought about adding brewers yeast? Also if you save a bit of the old and add it to the new your fermentation should increase.
I do leave some in the bottom to kick start the process, I have not thought about using yeast
Can you add bakes yeast as alternative. Brewers yeast is so expensive where i live

Welcome to the channel! This is a local mix of grain. I don’t make it. But it’s equal parts of 6 grains all non gmo.

No, because I keep plenty of water in it and we go through the barrels pretty quickly

You should get a wood or plastic paddle you stir your grain instead of a metal post shovel.
Suggest you use plastic drums as your steel drums will corrode and contaminate the feed.

North Country Off Grid so Your butcher pigs are on dry feed? I plan to butcher my two pigs however we are feeding them wet non-GMO organic feed.
