I used to draw and paint a lot, been on all sorts of sites and communities way back in the day (most of them are instinct now). My DeviantArt account is like a crime scene I come back to every four or so years. I made account on Cara mostly to support the app, I owe at least that much to the community. Also, how knows maybe I make something again then I have a place to post it. I was never good at catching up with Instagram and all the fast paced apps, I'm not even that social to be honest so getting likes and shares was never something I got into. Cara reminds me a lot of the good ole days.

Cara might not be the ‘end all, be all’ but what is more important is that it’s a message sent to all these greedy and smiley social platforms that just because something’s on the internet doesn’t just mean you can use it as if it’s public domain. Also I think Cara is just at best a better option for now because not only it was made by a artist but an artist who has won cases against Gen ai and literally has worked with the people who have made glaze and actually implemented it into the platform so artists data from each project is protected. That’s why I think it’s the better option for now and also Gen ai models shouldn’t be opt out…it should be opt in form the get go

I am a professional artist and I got more traction on Cara than on Instagram.
Why? Because I don't want to post reels, I don't want to post everyday, the algorithm is shxxxt.
So if you are not an established artist before the dead of the #, if you are not a youtuber, then Instagram is not that eldorado I hear everyone online taking about.
Of course people who have a big following on Instagram don't want to leave it and will say to newer artists to not go elsewhere because it's your bread and butter.
But think about the newer artists, no way to find them out on Instagram. And when you follow them, 9 times out of 10, Instagram doesn't show me their art.
I will keep both but I find sometimes art youtubers are bias because they already have their fame on Instagram and having concurrency elsewhere is a really good thing in my opinion but many of them don't like it.
Anyway, I understand that we all hope to have not hop in and out all the time of different platforms. Cara isn't Instagram, but I secretly hope it does in some years.

They do have a "buy me a coffee" page where you can support them with one time purchases or monthly with different price tiers with their respective goodies (similar to patreon). All the support is meaningful of course but I heard the server bill was very expensive, the cause being the unexpected amount of people that joined the platform in such a short amount of time. So support, patience and understanding are very important if we want to keep the platform going.

I actually saw a lot of smaller artists not being "against" it but sort of regretting making an account or being disappointed but lack of traction. And I saw bigger artist make accounts and still post on cara to this day. For a lot of artists, not necessarily clout but their source of income that dictates they remain insta (ie. For commissions, brand deals, small business, etc.) Cara doesn't really appeal to non artists, and non artists are the ppl who pay the most, so the app isn't really a viable option for those artists
Basically, it's a very complex issue that can't be boiled down to "big" and "small" artists

    • @JH-pe3ro
      @JH-pe3ro 3 місяці тому

It depends on how much they were relying on "influencer" tactics and legible engagement metrics. The platforms that stick to simpler passive feeds without algorithmic engagement discourage influencers because they mostly get blocked when they try to stir the pot. If you go on Insta or X you get bombarded with that stuff, it's designed to make it leak through and prompt you to mash the like button so they thrive there. The platforms taking a lot of investment need legibility and visible metrics like pressing like buttons so that they can sell ads, so they generally cater to influencers and not ordinary people. The influencers are likewise relying on the legibility of those numbers to figure out what to say or do next, if they get blocked they cry sour grapes and say it is "dead".

Because popular artists are looking at it from a different lense. Once you're that big, it doesn't make sense to move, and encouraging people to move to where you're not is an objectively terrible business decision. Whether they actually hate it or not is up in the air tho.

This is actually a good response. From what I have seen, there was serious false information about Cara that the whole "training in AI" was actually people taking another company or something in the same name as Cara. The creator of Cara shared a post that it was confirmed that they are actually trying to protect artists from AI. That is what I heard from Instagram stories and other videos, there are too many rumors spreading around but I still actually agree with your valued response to the Cara situation. I honestly don't know who to believe anymore, there are folks who are staying on Instagram and just ignore Meta's newest update. There are artists who made a Cara account to use until Instagram changes their minds or when it's over.
I'm definitely checking out the other videos for more information. I do not want every artist or creator to have to deal with AI art no more as a daily struggle, it's really sad to see so many people leaving Instagram permanently just to escape AI again. Feels like nowhere is safe.
Thanks for making this video 🌸

Thank you for being up-front about the pros and cons of Cara! Way too many people I saw covering this treated this as a situation where someone saying anything negative against Cara was against it, or even worse, for the policies Meta is implementing. I personally love Cara for what it is now and look forward to seeing it grow, but too many people joined expecting some polished masterpiece where they could grow quickly. That just did a massive disservice to A) the users who took the time to try out the app because of that misinformation and B) Cara itself, by now have a demographic of people who will probably never try the app again because their impossibly high expectations were not met by an app in beta.
I also really hate it when people refer to Cara as a new insta for artists. The whole point of many of us leaving Insta, is because we hated it. It wasn't JUST about Meta's AI policies, but a combination of that, the awful mishandling of creative features on the app (tags, reels, our freakin home and explore feeds), the atrocious upload schedule one would have to maintain to grow on the platform and the general shady lack of transparency Meta has with it's users! Many of us want Cara to be better, an enjoyable place for artists and art-lovers alike. Unfortunately many aren't going to sick around or even think to come back later because of completely normal issues that happen in beta development.

What many are rightfully being worried about is that this might eventually become yet another massive Bait&Switch. Maybe not even by the original devs of this site either. But who knows if 1-2 years from now they get bought by some other company, who will immediately proceed to make yet another AI training behind the scenes (or sell the data to another company), only to announce it in public when it's too late, to give a worthless "opt-out" option to the users who's work have been already exploited? Unfortunately until AI training is properly regulated to prevent this kind of behaviour, this *is* a possibility.

I don't use Instagram anymore (Would use it as a form of contact though) and decided to replace it with cara cause it focuses around artist while Instagram doesn't, Instagram just sucks for artist mostly for smaller artist for cara on the other hand i can say if anyone is a smaller artist use cara.
Cara feel's like a breath of fresh air giving artist room to breathe, because you don't have to feel like your always competing with the system and other artist, as to Instagram it always feels like that and it sucks, cara will never be the new Instagram because it's, it's own thing.

Like, yes people are using it now. But eventually, there will be a new one to go to. Or, the team behind it, eventually abandons it, and the new team makes it a clone of their app (rip Vent)

NOTHING will get changed to artists unless we stop thinking in numbers because right now the only artists benefitting off insta's exposure are the ones that are already big and that are trying to convince you to stay on insta so they can keep their clout.

BTW. when it comes to Meta not using images posted by people, this problem mainly affects people living outside the EU.
In EU, if you say that you don't want them to use your artworks/images to train AI, they have to agree to not use it, no matter what is the reason.
They can't use this "show us that your image was used in Datasets or we will ignore you" attitude here.
Like, i wrote that "application" to them, the reason for it being that "i don't want my images to be used to train ai" - and they answered me like a hour later, saying they would not use it.

To refine the craft. To get feed back. To support emerging human art. Art for the sake of art. I am supporting cara and would easily be an ambassador of this new platform that honors arts and crafts as an invitation for the art societies embrace against ai art. I admit: I was so excited to hear about Cara. I was told it was a great space to put artwork, reminiscent of Deviantart (for me, anyway) back in the day. I saw it as a good alternative to Instagram not to replace it but to divide the content I want to put on that platform. I wanted to place different things on different platforms to have a cohesive and consistent audience. Seeing that it was still in beta, I made the choice to bookmark the page and wait until it releases its 1.0. However, I am a supportive hobbyist and not a professional. I don't rely on my art as my income. I do wish all the best for the developers and users and I hope Cara continues to thrive, but at a healthier and sustainable pace.
Thank you for the reflection in this video!

And still I get way more engagement on Cara than on Instagram. With less stress and anxiety. Also, I thought a lot about the downside of Cara being a platform only for artists thus limiting your potential auditory. I guess there are some situations where it's for the best - if you're not an artists with a very eye candy style you might not get attention from non-artists anyway, where art community might understand your works better and be interested in your sketches and small comics and OCs. And also when an artists leaves a kind comment on your work you can go look at their art and create a meaningful conversation that is not only centered around yourself, which is good for creating connections. I realized that most of the people with whom we communicated on IG more than 'cool! thank you!' are artists. It's easy to follow back a person who showed interest and kindness to you if they are posting art as well - you can pay back the attention without messing with your feed.

I still think that there’s too much “I want to get likes again” when I hear people talk about cara. It’s like people are trying to find the next thing to fuel an addiction to social media because instagram isn’t providing it anymore. That’s part of the problem with instagram and other platforms. I think a lot of us need to shift our idea of what the point is. Getting a lot of likes doesn’t mean anything if there’s no real engagement and you just want community. If you want to make art a career, likes don’t matter. They are noise and pressure. I think that as a whole artists need to realize also that platforms like instagram etc aren’t going to be the thing that makes you have a successful art career, and we need to find other, more concrete ways. Just posting on a platform and waiting isn’t a particularly good tactic, and it sort of just lulls you into feeling like you did effective marketing when it isn’t. I think the days of being able to post to a social media platform and blow up in ways that actually lead to anything concrete are largely behind us. Social media is in a different phase now, and we need to find other methods, maybe even going back to some of the pre social media tactics people used to use. With ai, the cat is already out of the bag, and we have to spend less time freaking out about it and more time preparing for how to counter it and make it clear that it’s trash. Because it is. In my career, in addition to it being unethical, ai is also not USEFUL. It doesn’t provide useful references because it doesn’t know what things actually are. It doesn’t know that a forearm is made up of a bunch of individual parts working together. It isn’t iterative, and my clients need to be able to feel like they have a say in every stage and can trust me to deliver. Certain clients even specifically say you can’t use ai in any way in contracts. It isn’t good for generating ideas. I can come up with a ton of ideas doing thumbnails and sketches in a few minutes and they are better ideas. It’s like how people were telling us we all needed to get in on the “nft technology”. I suspect that generative ai has already kind of reached the peak of what it is able to do considering how “ai” works, and people just need to get to a point as a whole where they are tired of it. In the meantime, artists need to make it clear why we are important, cuz non artists just don’t know how anything works. Idk, just some thoughts. This isn’t to say I don’t think that ai will ruin a ton of things in the process, but I think we need to all be smarter about how we counter it and reassert ourselves. I think it’s useful to support Cara because they want to protect artists from ai, but I don’t think that waiting for a platform to become the new way to post constantly to get likes is good in the long run. I think we need to start finding better ways to cut out the social media middleman and realize it’s possible to have a successful art career and an internet presence without “a ton of likes”

My priority isn't to gain a huge traction, but rather a small community. As someone who was brought up on deviantart and misses the old days of the site. Cara seems to be the nicest alternative for me at the moment. As it is a platform with a tight sense of community rather than a competition on who can gain the most likes, considering the algorithm on sites like Instagram are not catered to images alone and heavily prioritises reels and constant uploads. I want to post animations here and there, but I don't ever plan to cater to videos constantly nor do I plan to have a consistent upload schedule in general. As growing numbers is not what drives me, but to enjoy the process of creating when I feel inspired at the time and if people happen to enjoy what I do, that's fantastic. So in summary Cara is fine, as I'm not looking into perusing art professionally at the moment.

That's valid. But I have to tell you somenthing
Social media aren't indispensable for work as an artist. They are just tools
You wanted to be an indie artist or a industrial artist? Because in the industrial artist case, you just have to need to know how to make a portfolio and look for jobs that could need you
Meanwhile on the indie artist way, you can make your own website (think on websites like "Welcome Home" for example. Not like Cara, that's a diferent thing)
It's all about information and consistency.
But your decision is also reasonable, living of art whithout knowing how or having information resources is VERY hard.

    • @holy.diever
      @holy.diever 3 місяці тому

@DeadnyMaster my problem with the site thing is that... how are you gonna get people looking at your site without a social media presence?? It just doesnt happen. No one will find out about it unless you spend money on advertising or have a social media presence or have a friend who has a big enough following to promote you.

    • @100lovenana
      @100lovenana 2 місяці тому

@@holy.diever I agree on that. You may want to create your own website, but it will be completely invisible in front of the insanely advertisement-dependent world we are in today. Because if you don't go for a social media presence, you would still need to pay money and effort to make other kinds of advertisement out in the real world (posters are laughably outdated and inneffective nowadays, but they aren't cheap either), just to make sure that people know you website even _exists_ .
I'm an indie artist too, and I'm going through a similar dilemma. There's no way I'm abandoning art, it is my passion and something that always called me back whenever I tried to leave it. But social media and big corporations have made it impossible for my work to be seen by more than 20 people.
I have made a decision... I'm laying low. The situation is rocky, big platforms have become s/-/it and the new ones have an uncertain future (since many "promising" sites for artists have already become stale). I'm going the old fashion way of being a relatively hidden artists who only shows my work to relatives and acquaintances, at least untill the situation is solved in some way, wether with a new site that actually succeeds or something else.

As a young hobby artist, I'm weighing all the different places to post my art, and I appreciate this analysis. Though I had already decided not to post there (I just don't really vibe with the aesthetic, it looks a little too crisp and modern for my taste, and the sheer amount of stunning professional art on there was rather intimidating for me), I was interested to see an artist's more negative perspective of the site, given all the good press it was receiving. At first I thought this was just clickbait, but you actually were really fair about Cara and the downsides to use it, rather than blindly stating that only a silly idealist would leave a big name social media platform for one that normies would never use.
As for the sites I am considering posting on, I'm thinking of probably Newgrounds or Side7. Both have very charming, almost retro looking interfaces. Both also have the benefit of rating systems and a more detailed tagging system which Cara lacks. I prefer Newground's image previews, but I like that Side7 has a lot of distinct categories, making it easy to find serial comics as opposed to short strips, photography, etc. Whereas Newground's art portal doesn't appear to have the option to sort by category like that. Also, Side7 has a smaller user base, and doesn't have a 'scouting' system like Newgrounds to make your art visible, so I may feel more comfortable as an amateur artist posting there.

maybe one day cara will be a cool place to build a platform on, but right now it isnt and so it doesnt give me any want to move.
the ai problem is nuts but i think people need ro remember that your art is such a small percentage with all of the images its being trained on. there is quite literally almost no chance that the ai will even reflect any of what youve made because of the saturation of other images.
i hate that ai art is becoming so advanced that people are supporting it. but its clear we dont have a say anymore and protests are not working.

I don't think I would advise anyone to REPLACE IG with Cara, at least for now. But it's a great new addition to the scene, for sure.
Cara is off to a great start, and is a big relief for artists compared to so many other platforms - it's absolutely worth it to be on, even just as an addition to other outlets. It's missing a couple of key features that will need to be solved. 1) is survival - it needs to monetize in some way to keep from dying from its own success; they're still working on this, but I personally think they should start with optional memberships in a few tiers, to let people help cover the costs. Then over time they can add features like printing and merch support and take a cut, expand on the job listings they have now, maybe add paid subscriptions (similar to UA-cam and Twitch, where money goes to the artist), and so on. 2) Build audience - they need to work to build non-artist audience so there are PEOPLE to follow artists, ones who will follow artists and eventually maybe buy from them. To build a MARKET, in other words. The sort of thing IG used to be good at before they suppressed that part of their algorithm.

But I don't think Cara is a replacement for the 'casual customer' traffic instagram can offer, if you make it big enough on there. But as a beginner who doesn't want Instagram to become your job, I don't think the chances are that great to gain traction on there anymore, either... Cara is not 'the alternative to instagram', like the video rightfully said. But if you are just starting out and want a friendly artist community to get inspirations and meet fellow artists, give Cara a try.

So if you're a an artist that your income depend mainly in the selling your art to individual customers, dropping Instagram completely for Cara is not a reliable decision. At the end of the day, a lot of artists work depend on engagement

I do miss the engagement on Twitter but it was so beyond toxic that my mental health couldn’t handle it. And it was after elons whole rebrand and super account bs that I started getting bigots on my feed instead of the artists I was used to. So I left it for Bluesky and I don’t see the art I used to (mainly bcuz like u said a lot of artists stayed using Twitter mainly) but also because there’s no personalized algorithm like Twitter USED TO have. While with insta, because of the over-saturation of users and impossible algorithm and explore page, I get virtually no engagement, except from bots. So leaving it won’t really be all that hard. I think the only issue rly is that while I love finding new artists, just looking at art all day is kinda boring. Especially cuz they don’t have videos yet. Which I’m not rly mad about, it’s just more exciting to engage with, like on art TikTok and UA-cam. I did stop posting art on Instagram, and while Cara slowly builds their platform, I’m just using it as a safe place to have a public portfolio more than anything. I’ve gotten more real engagement on there than insta anyways.

I made an account on Cara but I haven't posted anything, whenever I go in is to check out what's going on in there and something that really bothers me is the comments on some of the art I see. Not sure if it's me but a lot of the comments feel like bots. They feel generic and only vague enough to elude that they're talking about the OP's piece but they look extremely off. I've even gone into some of those accounts and checked them out and oftn they don't even have the "about" or "bio"section written. Which i guess it can happen since not everyone will fell like putting up stuff but still.
Maybe I'm just tired of dealing with all these sites and their AI bs that I'm suspicios of every other site claiming to be there for artists. I'm really tired of it, man. But I'm still trying to make and share my art somewhere. I just don't feel safe in any site anymore.

no, we should be supporting cara. im sick of instagram and i don't use it for following artists because even AI aside, the algorithm is just so awful and you can't even sort by new. its a terrible platform

I'd like to add that while Cara is great for pro artists, as a beginner/very small artist I've found even less growth than on instagram there, purely because Cara is full of so many good artists and no one cares to go outside their feed and checking the "recent" page, so my work is seen by literally no one, and same goes for a lot of artists that are sometimes really good and somehow ignored by the algorythm, I wish Cara was a good place for small artists but as of now my profile is collecting dust because no one cares.

I've never used instagram, and I have moved from twitter to tumblr and dropped reddit. Maybe I'll pick up cara eventually, but i'd like to wait until it's a bit more fleshed out

By the sounds of it I'm one of the few people that meta accepted the opt out request for. BUT this was because I threatened Large and aggressive legal action.

my opinions on every artist is
that there are 3 categories (friendlies), (average but okay) to (*Redacted*).
also whenever someone uses ai art they maybe lazy and also the AI don't know logic or where one part of an art ends

Cara is still building up, and honestly Instagram feels so bad to use in general, even more with my art.
It maybe it doesn't get as popular, but it doesn't try to steal your attention and soul every damn chance it has.

idk how it is elsewhere in the world, but in the Netherlands I was simply able to opt out using thew form. i just gave the reason "I think it is too risky" and I got an e-mail a day later, that my request was approved... maybe it is due to the stricter privacy rules in the European Union... I hope other parts of the worlds get it easier too..

To be honest, I think Cara is going to be forgotten. It doesn't take one app to destroy Instagram; however, it will still make an impact, but it would need lots of events so Instagram could be replaced.

Only reason I don't use cara is that it's layout looks like twitter (don't like how it looks) and doesn't have tagging system like Instagram and tumblr (i love my tags)😢
