  • In this video I show you the "Slap Chop" method of speed-painting the Goblins from the 2021 version of HeroQuest by Avalon Hill, including the figures from the Kellar's Keep expansion and the Mythic Tier bonus sculpts. This tutorial is geared mainly towards beginners, but experienced painters may still find something useful here.

Really glad I found these videos. I've been trying to get back into painting and your how-to's are perfect!
Thanks also for mentioning the mold lines coming up after priming. At one point, priming was essential for finding defects in colored 40K plastic. A lot of GW techniques, and by that I mean survival techniques from the 90s, are very applicable to these minis - which were meant to be tokens I think more than strategy game figures.

Glad you like them. I really wish I knew a way to see those mold lines better before I get paint or primer down. I almost always have to do more work after priming the minis. Sometimes I don't even notice until the model is fully painted and I'm taking photos for the video. Of course that's when I also notice all the little mistakes I made when painting. That's when I just have to remind myself that I'm not trying to make these look good, I'm just trying to make them look "good enough"

Hey, this is awesome! I'm currently in the process of exactly that! :D
Great choice of colors. Speedpaints and contrast paints are really cool and you can get some nice effects with those colors.
    Great video! 😊

Hello i am confused with this tecnic. Why do you prime in grey/black for then drybrush all figure in white? Why not prime in white and wash it black? Are there any significant results in doing all that drybrush?

That's a great question! The white drybrush actually provides a couple of benefits.
      1. If you primed white and washed black, the end result would be grey with black recesses because a wash always stains the underlying color, even on raised/flat surfaces. This would prevent your highlights from being as bright as they could be.
      2. Drybrushing tends to hit edges and raised surfaces, which gives you sort of a free edge-highlight.
I'd also note that most folks would slapchop WITHOUT doing a zenithal prime (black on full mini, they grey/white from above). The only reason I didn't do it this way was because I typically do a zenithal prime on my models, and at the time I primed them I didn't know I was going to slapchop these (I don't think I even owned the speedpaints at the time).
      Hope this helps!

I liked the purple/light green scheme. It reminded me, appropriately enough, of Green Goblin from Spider-Man.

Thanks! It didn't even occur to me about the color scheme until you mentioned it. Had I been thinking of it I probably would have used the purple for one of the hooded male goblins, too. I'll have to remember this if they release any more expansions with those sculpts.

Lovely tutorial but not Slap Chop. This is Zenithal. Slap Chop is to start with black prime and paint or drybrush opaque paints on top. Zenithal is to create a black-gray-white gradient prime and put transparent paint on top, for example Speed Paints or Contrast Paints. Vince Venturella has some great tutorials and examples.

Thanks for watching! I almost always start with zenithal primes - which I did before I decided to do slap chop. Then I do the drybrush and paint with speedpaints as you said.
