This model radio has a slightly updated version which is now for sale on Amazon, the DX-286 is the new version of the SR-286 and for sale (without battery) on Amazon currently for $79.99 and comes in a hard shell case with foam lining sized for the radio. Minor firmware update and some interface convenience changes but nothing substantial in terms of the radio portion itself. That digitally-tuned radio is pretty impressive to be able to keep up with the Panasonic, very impressive. Gotta love a radio review/preview + desert DXing + Mine Explorers crossover. Great vid!

@shango066 I like the radio desert test ones too,but the tv ones are my favorites, especially the ones where you take us along on your trips to find them. Those hoardes of sets you found stored away and the ones in abandoned buildings and laying on the ground that you brought back to resurrect were great. I am a big fan of your videos. I have a large collection of of all kind of radios at home. I recently acquired the new version of Qodosen, the DX-286 from Amazon. I haven't tested it thoroughly yet, but it is one of the best radios I ever had, sensitivity, selectivity and sound quality for its size is really impressive. Nothing comes close to it in its class/size. They say that you can switch between the internal/ferrite and external whip/wire antenna in the AM (MW, LW) bands, it's in the manual, (I haven't tried it myself). If you are at home, use the internal ferrite antenna (default) to avoid electrical noises etc, but if you go to the desert for DX-ing, switch to the whip antenna, or even better if you have a 20 foot wire antenna. In this case, they say, it outperforms the best AM-DX radios like the Superadio II etc.
Panasonic portables have been a favorite collectible of mine, not even sure how many i have now. All work well too. And that Qodosen radio, i picked up the DX-286 which is more or less identical and that radio's gain on AM via that telescoping antenna shocked me. Wasn't expecting that at all. Even out guns my Tecsun PL-330 which in itself is a decent receiver. Great video!
This 25:39 is ckwx 1130 from Vancouver. I get it here in lethbridge every evening. Also a Slavic language station on 1130 from Portland. Knx comes in pretty well here too, although there's a little 50 watt guy in plentywood Montana on 1070 I hear as well.
You can use the telescopic antenna for MW on Qodosen by pressing and holding AM+page buttons while on MW it will deactivate the ferrite antenna and use the telescopic or external antenna jack.
Hello sir. That was a great video, I really enjoyed the additional drone footage, too. I don't believe anyone has mentioned this, but pressing and holding both the "PAGE" and "AM" buttons on the Qodosen will allow you to toggle between the internal bar antenna or the telescopic antenna. Then, you can use the external antenna jack. It makes a noticeable difference in sensitivity, but it will also pick up more RFI too. Away from the power lines, etc, I can DX in my backyard with the telescopic antenna alone during the day! I would like to see a rematch with the TO and Qodosen using its telescopic antenna this time. Thank you for all you do! 📻
They've released a new version of the QODOSEN, now a DX designation. It's no more sensitive, but has some interface improvements and additional tuning step options.
What will it set ya back for? DX for am and fm? Is this a unit you’d have around for an emergency or a little fun? Looking to get rid of my crappy ancient mono radio.
Just came here to ask about the differences between the two radios after spotting the two versions, I was thinking the SR was a premium version or something. Good to know that the DX is an improved version especially since it appears to be cheaper too!

The SR-286 is a great little radio. Especially for todays offerings. Ive had mine since they came out. You can also switch the antenna between the internal and external antenna on AM. Also there is a preamp you can switch on and off. Try one of the XHDATA D-220 radios. Very hot little pocket radio. $13 on the jungle site. Only downside is it needs some kind of fine tuning add on. Maybe you can figure something out. Thanks for making my saturday! Ted

8:25 There are two kinds of Nu-trol contact cleaner: yellow strip with regular oil, orange strip with silicone oil. Yellow cleans better, orange evaporates more slowly. I used it on hearing testing booth jacks that were calibrated annually. Those where I used the orange Nu-trol lasted the whole year without crackling; those with yellow, did not. I guess it would be optimal to clean with yellow, and then give it one last spray of orange.
Have you tried the C.Crane radios? The one I have does SW, MW, FM and it has SSB. I think it DX’s pretty good compared to my friends Grundig. Love the mine exploration videos. Thanks!

You must do a scan on Longwave with the Qodosen. It can, under optimal conditions, pick up broadcasts I can hear Morocco, from the East Coast. Also I'm sure you know by now. but the radio has a feature to toggle AM and longwave reception from bar antenna to whip antenna.
If I didn't know any better, I would almost think there was a switch mode power supply nearby, by the sound coming out of the little silver SDR radio. I have an LED lamp on my workbench with a switch mode power supply and it makes the identical noise until I unplug it over any AM radio I have. But that's me. Just sounds the same. BTW.... Loved that scene where you guys had your heads covered during the drone shot. Lol.
@agoogleuser704 oh for sure. I mean that's just what it sounds like. I agree totally. If they're actually was a switch mode power supply nearby or something of that nature, then it would most certainly affect the other radios and the noise would change when leaving the house. Yeah, noise can be tricky stuff to nail.
You could make an RF sniffer out of hard copper coax and an SMA connector and connect it to a spec an and zero right into the noisy component/circuit trace. Make a 3/8" loop at the end of the coax, solder the ground back onto itself and use an exacto knife to cut a small 1/16" section of the copper outer shell away leaving the teflon insulator and center conductor untouched. It's usually easier to cut it by rolling it on the bench with the blade before forming it into the loop. I've used this method to find resonant/noisy PCB traces. Since this one is spraying so much, should be easy to localize. 26:40, come for the RF noise, stay for the political conspiracy noise! Guarantee invalid, Cucamonga winery is open and thriving. Tokay is a naturally sweet dessert wine originally from Hungary. Strikers on matchbooks were moved to the back between 1973 to 1978 so not earlier than 1973. Barcodes became widely used in the 80s, not the 50s. The very first one was in 1974, so not after then. From Google, KNX's transmitter is more efficient than most. So no lowered power conspiracies needed... The 494-foot main antenna is 0.53λ, or 193.5 electrical degrees. It has an efficiency of 400.73 mV/m/kW at 1 km.[51] This is much better than average for a Class A station's main antenna. The FCC's minimum efficiency requirement is 362.10 mV/m/kW at 1 km.[52]
The beer can was the “pop top” (the tap beaks off, only to get stepped if thrown on the ground and cut you if you’re barefoot). Ironic the hear Margaritaville that tells that story “stepped on a pop top”.
That brass/ferrite coil peaking technique is new to me, learn something here every week. I too look forward to these DX tests, if you're doing modern vs' old classic could you do the Retekess TR-629, its a Chinese $40 DSP set that goes to 22MHz on SW and would be a good comparison to a later Transoceanic (like the D7000 you repaired a few years ago) thanks. What makes the DSP set standout also its USB slot will play files, and record. Meanwhile, Zenith born a champion!
Shango, it might be cool to do a series of videos on how to make a radio “hotter”. A before and after comparison would be fun. And tips on how you would do these mods would be very interesting.
And speaking of radios, I just heard that the Los Angeles won the World Series beating the New York Yankees in Game 5 at Yankee Stadium. I love the Yankees, and I was so disappointed that they lost, but the Dodgers are the World Champions.
Again the switchable antenna amplifier on MW makes a world of difference especially on the whip antenna and outperforms the bar antenna. It is one of the features on the keyboard of the Qodosen.
Last Saturday Oct 26th between 7pm and 7:30pm my time here in Minnesota I was able to get WSM 650 AM in Nashville on my 20 plus year old radio shack multiband radio using just the am antenna that's on it and at times it almost came in really clear but the one time it did it only lasted a couple of minutes.
Very typical skip. Signal bombs in and then either disappears or sinks back into the noise floor. Guys have shown this on FM in the daytime and it's really remarkable!
Ive got a digital radio made a similar brand that uses a 21700 battery, has incredible performance. The screen itself isnt causing the squealing, but the IC that powers it is. In any case for radio, Pure analog wins
If you ever get a really good solid state 1L6 tube you may want to let Jim's Radio Shop know about it because he's going to have some Zenith Transoceanic's coming up on the bench (including a Loctal version) and a couple of Halicrafters portables (1 he owns and one he had on the bench and he just used his last 1L6 to get it going)
In your opinion, would you recommend the QODOSEN SR-286 for DX? I am interested in it, and as much as it is a bit expensive for chineseum, it's not horribly expensive either if it is good on SW and MW DX.
It seems he would. I'm guessing anyone really interested in DX would have acquired some radios over time or hit the auction site for a quick and easy purchase of something vintage that is pretty hot on the AM band.
I am really interested in the new version of this new semiconductor 1L6 that you were testing on your Trans-O. Can you tell me more on where I can get info this particular version that you were field testing. You mentioned 1LA6 I think. Is that right? I have a socket adapter anyway if it is. Wow... Crazy gain increase. Now a DX king! Nice demo!
44:56 Tokay would be the type of wine that used to be in the bottle. I think it’s spelled Tokay and not Tokaji as a way to signal that it’s not Hungarian made but i could be wrong here.
I'd really love to see a desert comparison between this Zenit radio and some 80's, 90's Sony portables. (ICF series like 7600, 2001, SW55, SW77 etc) If you can loan some.
The DSP can be a real advantage especially in casual listening. I was on a trip with a friend in a mid teens Jeep and the radio clearly had DSP. It was really very good. We were stuck in traffic during a lightning storm and I did a band scan. It did turn the sensitivity and audio down to prevent the loud cracking, but the recovery was quite slow. I wish I had some control over that. And I have a cheap Chinese radio with DSP and it's pretty clear for talk shows with the background noise almost completely removed.
Tokay is a renowned high-quality Hungarian sweet white dessert wine. I suppose "Cucamunga Tokay" was a local Californian variety. I don't think nowadays you could use the brand name Tokay without paying a license fee to do so, I believe
I can do a whole video. Based around that, I have an Early locktal based transoceanic.I can restore and try and get that. Email Me all the details and hope I remember
You know it's bleak when someone says "The nice thing about the sand is it covers up the dust". America: Either just building up for an election or just getting over one. Party every day. The Qodosen SR 286 is really impressive.
Interesting the TO did so well. Not surprising as it was a really good radio and it has a better antenna. Panasonic made a lot of good stuff. I found a Matsushita T-22 from 1962 in a flea market. It fired right up and is one of my best radios for MW. Wonder how the Qodosen stacks up against the PL660?
I have a later Panasonic RE-6192 table radio that's one of my best AM performers and used every day. It went for less than $10 on eBay over 10 years ago in VG condition. It only draws about 2-3 watts and has never needed work. The speaker is too small and the FM tuner is a joke but it kills on AM.
Shango, I noticed Panasonic is making a come back with new TV's & they will be made in Japan not China. For Shortwave try the Tecsun PL-660, PL-680, PL-990x & H-501X there made in China but there not to bad. They do not mute on tune as no DSP chip in them & have duel & triple conversion receive. The lower cost Tecsun PL-330 isn't to bad but it's DSP & it will mute on tune which can be annoying. All of these radios tune to 30 MHz & have SSB on them. You can hear many pirates just outside the International Shortwave Band like 6925 kHz AM & LSB mode as well as ham radio. -73's
Hope it is not too late for Panasonic to come back and succeed again. When the old guard in Japan started to retire in the mid 1980s-1990s the company seemed to lose its way almost entirely by the mid 1990s.
Tokay? That's a Hungarian wine! Properly spelt, it's 'Tokaji' and is pronounced "Tock-eye".. It's very much an acquired taste, and has a sweet and sickly flavour, and is a very thick viscosity, almost a syrup. You can still get it today, and possibly the best known label would be 'Saint Steven's Crown' which is imported from Hungary - And it's not cheap to buy. Enjoy, savour, but don't blow out your entire pay packet on it! 🤩😻🥳😋🎉🍷🍷
Those damn AM/FM switches always go oxidized and dumb. I swear every portable from that era that's the first thing I wiggle besides the volume pot. Also we love the artifacts in the mines :)
I had one on a Lloyd's or something that I had to disassemble and scrape each of 3 contacts times 3 switches. Put it back together with a little touch of Sylglide and it was like new. Spraying control and contact cleaner just wouldn't get it done. I was very surprised. I got lucky because I was checking AM oscillator voltage and it just wouldn't come up. I traced it without a schematic and figured it out that way.

Yeah, noise can be tricky stuff to nail.
Both those radios, the Panasonic and the Qodosen stellar performers.
39:46 "PSA"... first thought: why ads, it's not TV resurrection video... then YT advert... Edit was kinda trippy for brief moment.
it almost hurts me seeing&hearing you two without sleep
love the Big Band.use to play it at WION.
50:15 Wow I have a t-shirt with that matchbook image! Bought from James Lileks’s merchandise store many years ago.
I wonder how all these radios would pit up against my Sangean ATS-505 with modifications to eliminate the silence while tuning.
Thanks for holding the mustard into the camera......the Recipe is Intresting....if it tastes Old!?.....thx for the vid
Great video. Panasonic made in Japan was great quality indeed.
The beer can was the “pop top” (the tap beaks off, only to get stepped if thrown on the ground and cut you if you’re barefoot). Ironic the hear Margaritaville that tells that story “stepped on a pop top”.
At 1:09 I can recognize the second aria of queen of the night, from The magic flute opera. Strange blend.
By the way, I'm watching on a smart TV while commenting on the phone.
Hearing all these snippets like the one at 50:18 makes me wish i could hear more! Its all very interesting!
I can request one of those. Nothing can touch a good working TO, watch to the end
Let’s go totally classic. A Hallicrafters SX-85 should be fun to bring to the desert! 😉
Just got to that point in the video. Yeah that Zenith is kicking ass.
Shango, it might be cool to do a series of videos on how to make a radio “hotter”. A before and after comparison would be fun. And tips on how you would do these mods would be very interesting.
Those are the mini version of what they put in CB amps neat
I miss seeing Panasonic, they really did make good stuff, and never really stopped.
I got the qodosen radio, you can use flat top 18650s just stick a round 2mm thick neodymium magnet to the top
Excellent AM noise video because you're actually getting DX 😅😊
And speaking of radios, I just heard that the Los Angeles won the World Series beating the New York Yankees in Game 5 at Yankee Stadium.
I love the Yankees, and I was so disappointed that they lost, but the Dodgers are the World Champions.
Wind a long wire around the radio to couple to the ferrite. One end in the air, the other flat on the ground or some other form of earth ground.
The name of the song during the drone fly over is, “i’am too sexy for this mine.” 😊
Again the switchable antenna amplifier on MW makes a world of difference especially on the whip antenna and outperforms the bar antenna. It is one of the features on the keyboard of the Qodosen.
Always wondered if you're prior military, radio ops?
There it is. I have hours of videos on them
In your opinion, would you recommend the QODOSEN SR-286 for DX? I am interested in it, and as much as it is a bit expensive for chineseum, it's not horribly expensive either if it is good on SW and MW DX.
It seems he would. I'm guessing anyone really interested in DX would have acquired some radios over time or hit the auction site for a quick and easy purchase of something vintage that is pretty hot on the AM band.
STILL like to see your best oldie radio (especially the transoceanic) against a modern ge/rca super radio 3 out there in the desert.......
Bring a few versions of each I and II also.
Amount of light pollution (almost zero) and how moonlight brights everywhere was really interesting.
Definite signs of being in the middle of nowhere.
I have a homemade magic wand, a wooden dowel with brass on one end and ferrite on the other end, many uses stays with my trim tools
The TEF6686 fully exploits its strengths in the FM band.
That's what I've noticed, too. My qudosen picks up so many weak fm stations and very clean!
Desert 🌵 Trip from a Very Wet Ireland 🙂🇮🇪☘️ Best hours entertainment on a Saturday night.
Ooh, Shango is on it... How long did you hold this video?
There is an internal switchable antenna amplifier in the Qodosen did you switch that on? It makes a big difference to the dx signal.
Nice demo!
There's a whole long video covering all the details
@@shango066 Oh yeah. I've already seen it, I'll watch it again.
Oh... "that guy".
Thx. I enjoyed this video!
@@AntiqueRadioandTV I know they are long. Watch at 2x speed
Dear Shango 066 please don't fall down in that cave and never be heard from again
What were they mining there. I have no idea .
Really interesting video . Great to see the old mine .
Did you switch to the whip antenna for mw on the Qodosen? I find it receives better dx than the ferrite bar antenna on mw.
Great video as always. I still can't get my head around those DSP radios. Much prefer the old analogue tuning.
I got KSL News 102.7 Salt Lake City Utah on 1160khz at 8pm Hawaii/Alaska Time using the Eton Elite field Radio....
Something lurks around 6.85 KHz at night. 😁
I can do a whole video.
Based around that, I have an Early locktal based transoceanic.I can restore and try and get that. Email
Me all the details and hope I remember
Like the drone footage
I have Panasonic CD player/Radio combo from the 1980s ... They are great 👍....
You know it's bleak when someone says "The nice thing about the sand is it covers up the dust". America: Either just building up for an election or just getting over one. Party every day. The Qodosen SR 286 is really impressive.
The metal radio noise sounds just like POE. Maybe the IC has some unused feature like WiFi or BT, that wasn’t disabled.
Lets go in search of more rare philco fords
I put a little aluminum foil in the battery compartment between the flat top 18650 and the contact. Works great!
What about that screw under the foam pad?
Did that one receiver squeal when it was new? If not, maybe something got screwed up with the circuit board . Very interesting video!
