- Yes, it's back, Tube Amp Theater!, with your host Terry at D-lab electronics. This time we tackle a 70's Fender silver face Princeton. Chassis looks great, however flip it over and wow, who was inside of this one? Well, the best course of action, remove and replace. A fairly straight forward restoration. Bonus: The original tubes tested perfect and did not require replacement. The fellow really scored on this amp purchase.

TONY......looks like he got a new Tele.......great job Terry !
Always a great day when Tony comes out.
Yes, please, MORE Tube Amp Theater! An Excellent addition to your channel! And, by the way, it was great seeing the official D-Lab Mojo Machine back to test another fine repair. Thanks, Terry and Tony!
It's always a great day when Snauzeramous appears...from Portu-ghoul. Great restoration as usual Terry!
Whaaat!?!?!?! 400 buuuucks!?!?! Whaaaat!?!?! Greatest buy of the era, right on!
I took a vacation day from work to drive to the next town over to get it!
@@brian_allan_white_solo_music absolutely brother, brilliant move! A vaca day for a lifetime of Fender awesomeness, I’m so totally psyched for you!
Thanks for the video 👍
Just luffly...
Thanx Terry
i want more theater!
Great job on the amp. That is the same exact wine that I drink.
Terry, Blazering the way for Princeton stage resurrection.
(Where was Kirk? He had an appointment with Nurse Chapel 🤣🤣 )
I bought my ‘67 Princeton for 400… in 1996! And you can really hear the difference with NOS etc. tubes with those simple circuits. Three channel Mesa, not so much.
Always a good day when Tony stops by. Where has he been, have you had him locked up in the basement? 😂 Another great repair Terry. Keep them coming. Happy New Year to you buddy!😎✌️
That board bears all the earmarks of... *THE KOBBLERRRR!!*
Wonderful sounding amp! Great job as usual!
Wonderful tone!
Just removed the stock Fender Special 10 inch and I am in the process of adding the Weber 10f150t 50w, lite dope. Should get never ending cleans! Super stoked for the chicken picking I do!
Hey Terry, great job..Looks and sounds great with good old Tony,s help..😀 Great fix and info..Ed..UK..😊
thats amazing i want see more of that!
Another great Job Terry 👍 i love to see my friend the old soldering Iron 😁
I've build one of this model amp from a kit........... it's a favorite. I had my cab setup with a 12" speaker rather than the stock 10.
I saw your video and built the same kit. Sadly my cab has a weird resonance that I haven’t fully fixed yet. It’s great when the back panels are off. Did you run into any issues with the box?
@@michaelfuller34 No, I didn't... However, if something is suspected to be a rattler, i put a bit of felt between them.
Nice job. All new parts pretty much guarantee success.
I know they aren’t necessary but I LOVE spending the extra money and putting the blue Sozo’s in this type of amp. Or Jupiters in Tweeds. They just warm your heart when you open the chassis and see them. They’re great caps as well. Worth it in a classic amp,me thinks.
They’re certainly better than the Orange Drop caps that so many techs think they should be using
You crack me up! And still enjoying the Vibrochamp radio amp you made.
Another great job, amp sounds wonderful...
That's awesome Terry!
tony da fendermeister!
Always down for TAT. Liked Snozzy's little dramatic departure there. LOL!
Amp sounded like chimey, Fender Goodness.
Tony had those enviable slow train blues licks. Homerun!
Nice one Terry
Hi thanks for the quality of your content. could you advise on a solid state amp that are reliable ?
Nice amplifier
Classic theatre. And cobbler too !
The moment we all waited for..the moment of truth or dare..the moment of 👹Ghoulardi!!!! Yessss yessssss yessssssssss 🙌🏼 thanks again Terry
Terry, next time you add some current monitoring resistors, can you expand on installation and how they are used?
Cathode current = Plate current + Screen current (pentode tube or beam power tube). By installing a resistor (of 1ohm) in series with the cathode (one per tube) you can safely and conveniently measure current through each individual tube. The measurement is made by hooking a voltmeter in parallel with the 1ohm (sense) resistor and using ohm's law to calculate the current. E=IR. Using 1ohm simplifies the equation to E=I, so your voltage measurement is your current through the tube (plate + screen current).
Thanks Nikki, I'll give that a try.
Excellent video, Terry!! Two questions...
What is power rating of the 1 ohm resistor?
What power rating would you use in a Super reverb with two 6L6GC's?
These are 3 watt 1%. You can use the same on the 6l6 tubes. They install from pin 8 to chassis
Wondering what the brand & wattage of the chassis solder iron you use are ?
Such a simple circuit I don't understand the hackery that took place
Cobbled together with mix and matched vendors and style of capacitors. The purists would say it should have been more consistent with like styles. It is a matter of opinion if it would be audible.
What year was the amp ?
👍
Hello Terry. What do you think of using non-polarized electrolitic capacitors at the cathode ? Thanks Terry.
Never tried them, When the opportunity comes up, I will
👍👍
Hi Terry, why did you replaced the blue drop capacitors? Are they known for being risky after x years?
Customer wanted a total re-cap
@@d-labelectronicsThank you for the reply. I have a silver face Twin from the '70s. I'm intended to change all the electrolytic caps, but I am hesitating about the blue drops. Do you advice me to replace them all, or only the defects ones (which involves a lot of testing leakage, ESR, Value, ...) I hear different sounds about these Blue drops. For some, they sucks and need to be replaced without hesitating, so it's not worth loosing time with testing. From others I hear that they are rather good quality, even after 40 years so probably only a few wiil have to be replaced. Love to hear the wise advice of an expert as you ;)
Nice workmanship!
Yes, you need the watts to heat a chassis solder bond to get it to puddle and wet properly. I have a Weller 260 watt gun that I am going to modify to use the Mr. Carlson method of using a 2 inch piece of 10 ga. solid copper wire.
Hakko also make high W soldering iron, 150 & 200w monster, which are not too pricy either
400 bucks! Wish I was as lucky.
Its only worth $400 now that hacker has gutted it.
At 3:30 do not use a Dremel cutoff wheel , reinforced or not, near your pots UNLESS you cover them up with lots of tape
and folded over Aluminum foil. Don't forget eye protection too. Just saying.
