- In this video I discuss in more detail the coding guidelines as they apply to acute vs. chronic conditions, NEC vs. NOS, rule out vs. ruled out conditions, impending and threatened conditions and multiple coding situations. I am currently an online student at DeVry University working towards my certification in medical billing & coding. I am very much a visual learner, and have been struggling with learning online. I think I have watched this video about 4 times now...I love how you simplify NEC and NOS and Rule out and Ruled out. I am currently in CareerStep for the Medical Billing and Coding, and just started their ICD-10-CM and ICD -10 PCS coding handbook....and your video's seem to be catching on more then the words in the books :) thank you for all the videos :)

Katrina B I just started the ICD 10 Coding module also with Career step. They are an over kill! Too much information but I'm pressing through. These videos help a whole lot!
I'm also a CareerStep student and I totally agree. These videos contain months worth of CareerStep information in one afternoon's worth of videos! Seriously. I understand everything so much better now.

New Suscriber....I'm so glad I found your channel. I'm studying for my CPC exam that i will take 11/12/16. I graduated with an AS degree 6/16 in HealthCare Reimbursement. I will be watching each and everyone of your videos everyday. I have watched 3 in one night. They are very informative and you break coding down so well. I finished my classes online. Took 3 mock exams while in school i made 60 the first time, 83 then 85. Praying I pass my exam the first time. Ready for a career change. I already started the 2018 Coding Guidelines and will be starting the 2019 at where I stopped the 2018 guidelines since thus far they are the same.

Hi! I am currently going through Penn Foster's online Medical Coding course and getting close to the end. I find your videos to be very helpful! Thank you so much for breaking down the information. I need all the help I can get, visually, hearing it, etc. Question: When you were explaining about NOS, and gave the example of food poisoning, Would it not be appropriate to query the physician for more specification? And why not?

I was wondering if you could fill me in on HCPCS info. So if, for instance, your doctor gave a patient some sample packets of Zoloft in his office or clinic, would there be a specific drug code for Zoloft? I can't find a drug code for Zoloft, so do I go with hcpcs code J8489 prescription drug, oral, nonchemothreaputic, Nos?

Is there a way to start from the beginning? I'm newly studying and confused as to how to select the main term. I'm having problems choosing the correct word to search
Yes. In the search box on UA-cam, type in "CodeMasterCoach" and go to my channel. When you get there, go to "Videos". That will give you a list of all of my videos. The grid allows you to view from newest to oldest or oldest to newest. Start at the beginning with the oldest video and move forward to the newest video.

Does each code have a certain $ amount attached and does it matter what sequence the codes are listed? Example: I see a pt with for TBI eval (2 hour eval)

Hello Coach! In Discretionary multiple coding, If there was an underlying condition that justified the manifestation, which code should be assigned 1st? The manifestation (eg: gangrene)? or the underlying condition (diabetes)? Thank you so very much! I'm a beginner to coding.
The underlying condition, such as diabetes, has a combination code that includes the manifestation. Look under Main Term "Diabetes" and then to the subterms, for the manifestation.

Yes, because "Diabetes" is still in the picture. Your patient still has diabetes and needs treatment.

Under the "discretionary coding", if the Dr. does not list DM, but it is elsewhere listed in previous billing and or the chart, would I "take the liberty" to list it? if so, should I inform the Dr. before doing it?
Yes, query the physician in writing. That way you have something in writing from the physician that states patient has DM.

CodeMaster Coach, I am starting chapter 14 in the coding handbook with Career Step and I just found your site after desperately searching for instructor videos. I am trying to figure out if I should just start back at chapter 6 with CM basic coding steps, but I am finding it very hard to know where to start with your videos. Since you are your own and not affiliated with Career Step; it is not black and white to line up titles. Any help would be appreciated even to know where to begin with your videos. Hi TT. Start at the beginning. When you go to my channel, put my videos in date order and follow. In the beginning, they are numbered.
Good afternoon, so with the Rule Out, do you just ask the physician what to code for or go ahead and code for Appendicitis?
If his final diagnosis is "Rule out appendicitis" then you code the appendicitis. That's what the physician was treating.

I definitely will. I want to build up to it and have a system for new coders to learn from the beginning up to advanced coding which will include CPT and HCPCs coding.
I'm struggling with combination codes, and not sure about what to take as the diagnosis I should be picking up. Here's one of the questions that I'm trying to figure out: Acute cholecystitis with cholelithiasis and choledocholithiasis. They only focused on Acute cholecystitis with cholelithiasis.
The key here kittkat42 is to find a way to include all three conditions. If you can't find it under main term cholecystitis, then look up main term choledocholithiasis and if not all three there then move on to main term cholelithiasis. You will find all three under one of them.

Thanks for your videos. I finished my course using the ICD-9 this June 2016 and feel very cheated because the ICD-10 was already in use. Your like a free course to help me get through the new book.
I studied Vocational Nursing and worked in a hospital for many years. Do you think with that training I could be comfortable taking the CPC Or CCS?

Do you have tips on how to pass the CPC exam
The two biggest that come to mind right now are know those guidelines at the beginning of each of the chapters of the CPT book. Those are on there especially the Anesthesia (P modifiers) and Path & Lab (panels). Also, for terms you don't know in medical terminology, pull out your code book and look up the term, and do not leave any question undone. Circle in an answer for all if time runs out. Do no leave any undone bubbles.

That is a good idea but most of my subscribers don't yet know how to code. After they learn to code then I can bring in different settings to code for.
