For reeaaal I was over exfoliating chemically, I thought because I have dry skin I need to exfoliate more but I was wrong, if you are keeping your skin hydrated enough then you don’t need to, I only exfoliate once a week now and use a gentle chemical exfoliant
I've really been enjoying Krave Beauty's Great Barrier Relief and their Matcha Hemp Hydrating Cleanser! That brand is vegan-friendly, cruelty free, and I've found it to be really gentle on my super sensitive skin.
I’ve been thinking of getting this cleanser since it came out. But so many bad reviews too. It didn’t clog your pores? I have dry skin & my barrier is good.. but I get clogged pores w most hydrating cleansers (hello Cerave)
I appreciate that you referenced brands like Cetaphil, CeraVe, and Vanicream. As someone who has extremely sensitive skin and has tried so many cruelty free brands, Vanicream and Cetaphil are the only things that have been calming down my skin and acne. I think it's hard when the "boring" but not cruelty free brands that you referenced have really good formulas and can benefit those with sensitive skin and just skin in general. I understand you wanting to stand by your morals but I don't think it's always so simple. I have extremely sensitive skin and would love if Vanicream and Cetaphil became cruelty free but regardless I will use it because it's the only thing my skin has liked. We have to keep our skin health and our barrier protected and that's hard when a lot of "fun" brands that are cruelty free have fragrance or extracts that cause reactions in a lot of people. Would appreciate if you could reference that because sometimes it feels like we should be ashamed for not using cruelty free but it's not always that simple. Also the cost difference between those brands and the ones you recommended instead is very apparent. I think it's a bit more complicated is all. Always appreciate your videos!
Yes to all of this, and thank you sooo much for sharing your struggle so openly, as well as your thoughts. Love you and appreciate you being here!! 💙💜💕

Omg how did you know?!!! I felt like my simple, boring routine wasn’t enough after watching the 10+ steps that were being recommended by so many gurus and boy did I overdo it as a result with every type of exfoliation possible. This could not be more timely and thank you. I know I’m not the only one currently suffering. Ugh.
Amazing content. Although this video didn't really talk about the signs of barrier damage in skin of color. Our skin doesn't go red. What signs of barrier damage can one look for in a POC?
Great question! And I apologize for not addressing this more readily! It can often feel the same way, and instead of turning pink it can sometimes turn a brown or red/ dark purple color in areas (not to be confused with hyperpigmentation! But can look similar!). It has some of the same issues of flaking, irritation, and the “waxy” look from over-exfoliation! In some studies, darker skin has been shown to repair quicker and more effectively! www.researchgate.net/publication/45285722_Structural_and_functional_differences_in_barrier_properties_of_African_American_Caucasian_and_East_Asian_skin
@@CassandraBankson Thank you. This helps. Love your videos. The Salicylic acid, naicinamide 10% and the vitamic c 23% by the ordinary are sooo good for me I took on your recommendations and my skin is receiving so many compliments. I'm glowing. Blemishes are fading, acne residing almost all gone. Sensitivity and irritation kept to a bare minimums. I have been using moisturizing sheet masks at night too. I'm Nigerian and the weather can be * cough* lol so finding what works has been a life saver. I'm almost done with my first bottles By the way I'm using Neutrogena ultra sheer mist sunscreen spf100+ is it good enough? Is it chemical or mineral? I use it everyday I want to go out. Hi Cassandra! I've been trying to decide what I wanna be when I grow up and you've influenced me to wanna be a dermatologist! I'm not sure what college yet, but I wanna practice dermatology. Thank you so much!💕
Hey! An entire routine for a damaged skin barrier would be really helpful :D I damaged mine about 5 months ago due to over exfoliation and it still hasn't fully recovered :( I can't wear makeup without my face getting super oily and breaking out, and I have to go back to college soon so I'm not too sure what to do :'D this video was very helpful in itself though, so thank you!
Great video! I noticed it is the "boring" products that actually make my skin look better for a longer period time. I don't know why but i noticed alot of times these "fun" products that get shoved right on are faces from repetitive advertising work really well in the beginning but then end up either doing nothing or start reversing the good results they give.
Maybe it's because in this quarantine everyone is trying new skincare routines that are not quite suitable for their skin type or that are too intense or full of active ingredients that are damaging their skin.
This happened to me. I started drinking more water, not sleeping on my face, moisturizing more and when I was my face only use light cleansers or cold water.
I did the same and my skin is super smooth and flawless 😍 i suggest that you wash your bedsheets every 2 days or just lay a clean cloth on your pillow so you can wash it every day
@@plamedibozen4146 yes. Sleeping on my faces caused fine lines and wrinkles, as well as cutting of the circulation of blood to the face. And the pillow gave me dry skin apart from the air conditioning. It no longer itches or hurts.
I paid to get a facial and it ended up damaging my skin barrier, it's been 2 weeks off redness and bumps with tiny white heads, I'm so glad I found you, I'm so sad and depressed at times
Hi Cassandra! Yes! Wish you would’ve included a repair routine in this video! Restarting my skincare/makeup journey after approx 20yrs, I went and bought several UA-camrs fav products, slapped them on and all hell broke loose on my face! My face was raging mad at me lol. That was a couple months ago. I’ve since educated myself thanks to Dr. Dray, Hyram, James W, and you! My face has forgiven me but still would love to know! Hope your well!❤️🤘
I see your lashes are beautifully growing back after that horror earlier this year. ;-). Thank you so much for this video, I nearly always watch your uploads. I try really hard to minimize irritation from tretinoin and retinol use, but even with applying to dry skin and buffering with moisturizer, it still does get a bit irritated and the barrier out of whack.
@@swinbot No problem at all, if you are still having problems another great product to try is The Ordinary Buffet serum (not with copper peptides) use that AM. It's a great hydration boost and with skin repairing ceramides. Good luck
I never comment here but I just wanted you to know that this is my favorite skincare channel. Your educational insight and explanation is so intriguing to me (biology major) and I love knowing exactly what certain ingredients do to my skin instead of just hearing "this is good" or "this is bad." Keep being great.
Would love to see a full cruelty-free routine. I'm over 60 and have a problem with stiff both dark and white chin hair. The follicles often get inflamed or infected and take weeks to heal. Chin is a mess most of the time.
There needs to be MORE VIDEOS about this!!!! So many times people think that they are “purging” from a new product or something because they are getting red bumps, “greasy”ness, tiny bumps that look like tiny white heads etc when it’s actually a damaged skin barrier. I would love a 1 on 1 with you! Like hire you for a half hour long consultation or something. In Canada, it is really hard to get a referral for a dermatitis unless you have a severe/chronic(AND severe) skin condition. And almost every single aesthetician that you’ll go to see are trying to sell the brand that their medispa carries. SkinFix fixed my skin when I destroyed my skin barrier. I recently triggered it again somehow and for a couple weeks had the same symptoms so again I went back to basics, but I’m frustrated not knowing what I can’t use and I really want to be able to use a retinol because (before I destroyed by moisture barrier taking like 5 months to fix cause it took a couple to realize I wasn’t purging but that I had a compromised skin barrier, this was a year or so after I got super into skincare) was the ingredient I think truly was what made the biggest (most effective and amazing), so I really want to incorporate a retinol. The one I used first (and it was amazing but I don’t support the brand anymore) was drunk elephants (even tho it was 1% retinol!!!!!) worked for me for like 6 months (it was adding a bunch of ahas and bhas I didn’t need that ruined my skin after). And my skin was at its best with that retinol every other night. But now that my skin has been mostly repaired for like 6 months I want to add a retinol but it seems like the ones I’ve tried have caused my skin to become reactive etc but also cause I’ve tried other stuff along with it (so stupid of me). I know I need to add something in one at a time. Also - I was able to heal my skin and do all that cause with covid - I wasn’t seeing anyone and it was during winter. Summer months are coming and I’m worried about creating a summer routine (since I’ve been using the skinfix cream for months and months now). I’ve tried different stuff and it seems like there’s likely a few things that I’m allergic to or cause me irritation (for example I know for sure l-ascorbic acid and vitamin c derivatives have not worked for me before). Anyways -- I’m trying to keep track of all the ingredients in the things I use (my career is as a consultant in social media marketing/brand building/clientele growth etc and I feel like there’s some websites that are in a baby phase of where they could be extremely extremely helpful here..... *palm to face lol) cause it’s a lot of work cause it’s not always as simple as just one product or ingredient!!!!! Sighhhhh. Anyway, you’re great, I appreciate you’re videos a ton, I appreciate your honesty and integrity when it comes to promoting products/how you benefit from these videos etc (also - if you’re truly helping a bunch of people who can’t get help elsewhere - you deserve to be compensated!!!! I’ll explain that louder to anyone who doesn’t understand that - feel free to message me, but yeah i love that you are honest about your opinions on products and authentic and have integrity when discussing products - which is different than those who are compensated for arguably unethical ways [sry mentioning this incase others msg me about it] so I’m so glad that this is working out for you enough that you can help SOOOOO many of us. You clearly work very hard on your videos, I know the social media space obviously and this space specifically is a ton a tonnn of work. So thank you. Wish we could have a one on one so much!!!!!
I loved this topic Cassandra. I think so much of the reasons for the skins barrier being compromised is all of the really bad skin care that is out there. Many with non complete ingredients lists. With over thirty years as a holistic master esthetician we see Bad sunscreen choices to many peels and acids used and foundation!!! We also see huge issues from micro needling! Everyone is just doing to much! Stop over doing things to your skin and start babying it🙌🏻 I do wish everyone would stop blaming natural ingredients, we use botanicals that have been properly sourced and combined and we have always been able to help the skin and the skins barrier. Natural ingredients and botanicals have been used for centuries to heal the skin and wounds and many articles are showing that they are being used today in hospitals and care facilities. So let’s not demonize natural ingredients. 🍑Lisa Peaches Skin Care
Yes, I have extremely sensitive skin and it's pretty easy to irritate. Even cetaphil can cause redness/burning/irritation on my face. I would LOVE to see your input on a skin barrier healing routine please!!!

I adore you so much and cherish your knowledge and applaud you for your journey. I have been in the medical field for many years now as an Ophthalmology Assistant, but low key always had an obsession with skincare. It wasn’t until an Oculoplastic doctor and team joined our practice that I found myself much closer to plastic surgery and my skincare knowledge and interests were fueled by the amount of Dermatology involved in plastic surgery that I get to see every day now. Then I found people like yourself that have truly inspired me more than I can tell you. Not only have you helped teach me certain things about my own skincare regimen, but you’ve also inspired me to work toward my Aesthetician license to be more involved as a Medical Aesthetician. I’m 32, well established and happy in my career and never imagined myself back in school of any kind at this point in life, but wanted to say thank you for encouraging me to push my own boundaries and explore a hidden passion and thank you for sharing your knowledge and experience as it holds more power than you know! ❤
3:05 "here are some of the ingredients you want to avoid".. Well , I'm using all of them , so .. now I get why my skin barrier is damaged. Thank you soo much Cassandra
Bless you for making this video, atopic dermatitis is never taken seriously by derms because all they know how to help is give steriods which are soooo damaging.
Medical esthetician’s, as well as non-medical esthetician’s can help repair skin barrier. That’s the whole premise of corneotherapy. Love this post, BTW. We see compromised skin barriers all the time. Usually due to over-exfoliation :(
Pam I think it has a lot to do with all the acids and peels and synthetic ingredients everyone is using. Also foundation! I assume your a fellow esthetician? I have been a holistic master esthetician for over thirty years. Hello!! 🍑Lisa

Yes. My skin is oily, but this past few weeks has been tight and sometimes even dry. Everytime I put my moisturizer my whole face turns red and burns. And since March my acne has been breaking out in my forehead like crazy. Bought the Krave beauty great barrier relief and the matcha cleanser to repair it. But still because of my oily skin and nature of my skin, and my acne on my forehead (I’m a male) it can look very dull and clogged. So, I sometimes still exfoliate with The ordinary 7% glycolic acid or in the morning’s the Paula’s Choice BHA 2%. Normally those products doesn’t irritate my skin, only the moisturizer. But chile, anyways. Let’s see. But since tonight I’m going to try to use the 2 krave products only for a week. ☹️
This happens to me since im on lockdown. (Started in march) stress and too much hot ac. Get hyaluronic acid. Buy an humidifier for your bedroom. I did all that and im getting better.
I tried to exfoliate in the beginning too because I had a lot of tiny pimples and closed comedones on my skin because of my damaged skin barrier. Only once I stopped avoiding exfoliating, that's when I had fewer pimples. For me, I had all of these break outs and acne because my skin was damaged, so I thought to myself "fuck it, I'm gonna walk around with acne, who cares" because it was time for me to fix my skin. Idk if you have the same problem as me, but try going without exfoliating for a month and see what happens because even if the exfoliators normally don't irritate your skin, you should avoid exfoliating when your skin is compromised. Your skin barrier already has "holes" in them, as Cassandra explained, so by exfoliating, you are only making this worse! Also, check out your moisturizer/find a new one if your current one doesn't suit your skin concerns.
Hey, Cassandra. I watched your channel about 10 years ago when I was 16 years old. Somehow your video poped up in my feed and now I watch your videos daily. About ten years ago I started to get really bad dandruff, about 5 years ago I found my ideal shampoo which I now know is because of Salacylic acid inclided. Few years ago I started to get red spots on my face. This year I visited dermatologist which said I have sebopsiorosis. To people who don't know, it's a combination between psiorosis and dermatitis (commonly on scalp and face). I haven't taken care of my skin at all, but you inspire me to do so. Now I'm really determined to get to know my skin. I bought few products from The Ordinary - thank god I found them in my country (Latvia). App "INCI beauty" have helped me understand which ingredients are good and which to better avoid. I would be so thankful if you could make video about psiriosis and sebopsiriosis. Thank you for the wonderful content you make! ❤❤❤
This happened to me when I was a teen and was really frustrated with my acne. I got so frustrated once that I actually used an old (and potentially expired) cream that my dermatologist prescribed me a while ago (I know, I was stupid, PLEASE don't do this T_T ). Needless to say, throughout the day my face became dry, cracked, burned, it even hurt whenever i tried to talk. Even water and my regular moisturizer burned my face. The only thing I could actually apply to my face without feeling any pain was vaseline lmao, took a nap after school, and woke up in the evening with healed skin? Not an expert in skincare by any means, but that literally saved my skin in just a couple hours i'm still shook
True that. I dream of putting vaseline on my skin from time to time but I have oily face with some acne. I do however apply vaseline on top of my moisturizer or even without it on my neck, decolletage, hands and feet and I m loving the after effect (it s just a lower TransEpidermal Water Loss). I don t wake up greasy at all, the vaseline transfers quickly on stuff so I m guessing creams formulated with vaseline would last longer on skin.
I know I been over drying my skin trying to get rid of some acne popping up around where I wear my mask....I know I just need to step back and go back to basics..but it's so hard 😭😭
Oh, Cassandra. This can‘t be true! Yesterday I searched through all your videos to find something to help with what I assumed was my damaged skin barrier. You must have read my mind! Thank you so much and greetings from Germany 🙃
This video has been a god send. Was put on an acne cream and it completely messed up my skin! CEREVE burned! Couldn’t use most moisturiser and only an eczema cream didn’t hurt unbearably. I’m just so fed up because I thought it was finally getting better. Nothings working for this acne 😢

i damaged my barrier like months ago to the point where my skin flares up with the most gentle non foaming hydrating cleanser! had no choice but to skip cleanser and literally only use water 🥴
@@rashichoudhary4482 hey! my skin type is normal and prone to dehydration/barrier damage. what I did was just wash my face with room temp water and moisturizer. I tried using vaseline as moisturizer for weeks but it was too heavy for me bec. i live in a humid place (i think vaseline works great in colder areas) basically morning is wash with water and moisturizer (I use physiogel daily moisture therapy) and at night i use a very gentle non foaming cleanser (avene extremely gentle cleanser lotion) and moisturizer. thats it! the most crucial part for me definitely was moisturizer! never ever forget to protect ur skin when ur barrier is extremely destroyed! i left my face alone once and got hive like acne!!! now im suffering from my bad choices. hope this helps! and as for the time of healing it defiinitely depends but ull see a difference in a month i feel like as long as u just stop using actives for a while.

Probably a reaction to an ingredient in the toners you used. If it’s not a sensitivity its also possible they contain bad alcohols or other harsh ingredients. Many are stripping and that can exacerbate acne.

OMG!!! THANK YOU SO VERY MUCH!!!! SUCH GREAT TIMING!! I couldn't understand what was wrong with my forehead all of a sudden. A raised, dark, dry patch, and a burning sensation across my face after using a serum and sunscreen underneath. After thinking about it, I realize that I had recently started brushing my face to exfoliate. It's my first time using this method to exfoliate. I have used it maybe a total of 10 times since I started doing it. It's literally destroying my skin. It felt good but, I was doing it but it's certainly damaging. I actually forgot about the brushing and started thinking that I was having some sort of liver issue. Thank God I found you when I did. I will start using a regimen based on your suggestion. God bless!

This came just at the right time.... having horrible redness and stinging after even rinsing my face with cold water. Minimised my routine but have now realised that every single moisturiser I have has phenoxyethanol in it! Never knew that could be an ingredient that is harmful
Does Phenoxyethanol still cause any issues after you repaired your barrier? They just changed the last moisturizer I've been using that had parabens, now it has... Phenoxyethanol. Every single product here has it.
So glad I found your channel! I just hopped over after seeing you collab with Manes by Mell. It’d be great if you could do a whole video on a routine with products that are helpful for restoring the skin barrier!
You are such a saver.. I recently had these small bumps on the folds of my neck that I noticed after using retinol. The bumps went away but left this waxy skin underneath. I'll now stop using retinol on my neck and just moisturize
Please do consider sharing a routine video for damaged skin. I started using Dr Bronner's soap and a toner, but not having a good moisturizer has stripped my skin dry.
So informative as always! My skin barrier used to be damaged and I didn't even know! Now I know how to prevent it to happen again! Thank you so much 🦋😇
Omg!!!! 😱 You and your channel are Just what I needed in my life!!!! 😍😍😍 Science and natural + sustainable options together... This is heavenly. I have atopic dermatitis, my doctor recommend me use La Roche Posay products that really help my skin, but that are not cruelty free, neither sustainable. So, in atemp to aline with my values I try eco options that left my skin irritaited and angry. I had to get back to Aveeno and LRP, and I feelt like crap in my morals, even if my skin was joyful. And Looking for other options I found your channel and I feel like I find a nice and thoughtful place to try again. Thank you so much for your advice!!!! 😍
I think that what is beneficial is to keep the skin barrier intact constantly and to never needlessly go beyond your skin's irritation threshold. Use the moisturisers that support the skin barrier all year and not only when the skin barrier is already damaged, apply retinoids on top of moisturiser if you can't tolerate it, avoid mixing actives if you can't tolerate it. Use products with niacinamide in them since most people can combine it with any active - but I do know someone and niacinamide stings the skin even on their hands. Personally, I use two "actives" a day: vitamin C and retinaldehyde. I also use a toner with fermented extracts and a hydrating serum: both with niacinamide. My moisturiser has 10% urea and a small amount of lactic acid.

After starting to use proactiv, I didn't realize till later on that there was no moisturizer included in their 3 step system. Coming from a person with oily skin, their system has made my skin the most dry and painful it has ever been. I diminished the use of their cleanser and added a moisturizer into my routine but after watching this video, I now will be stoping the use of the system all together. My best solution for eczema and psoriasis or any other skin irritation is oatmeal or epsom salt baths and coconut oil...Cortisone are simply addictive, it's like an endless cycle, the more you use them the higher dose the skin requires to heal itself.

Amazing content. Although this video didn't really talk about the signs of barrier damage in skin of color. Our skin doesn't go red. What signs of barrier damage can one look for in a POC?
Guys please like the comment for Cassandra to see!

I'm almost done with my first bottles
By the way I'm using Neutrogena ultra sheer mist sunscreen spf100+ is it good enough? Is it chemical or mineral? I use it everyday I want to go out. Like a whole slathering situation lol to make sure I'm covered.

I've never had a problem with dehydrated skin before this week. Perfect timing!
Yes, please put a routine together for when the skin barrier is disturbed, please!!!!
Great video! I noticed it is the "boring" products that actually make my skin look better for a longer period time. I don't know why but i noticed alot of times these "fun" products that get shoved right on are faces from repetitive advertising work really well in the beginning but then end up either doing nothing or start reversing the good results they give.
'Is your skin barrier damaged? ' yes! How did she know?!
Same! Lol it is so weird how good her timing is
I literally was about to post this exact same comment. 😅
Im scared by this, its exactly what I needed
Maybe it's because in this quarantine everyone is trying new skincare routines that are not quite suitable for their skin type or that are too intense or full of active ingredients that are damaging their skin.
Exactly the same.
This happened to me. I started drinking more water, not sleeping on my face, moisturizing more and when I was my face only use light cleansers or cold water.
Did you sée good results on your skin
I did the same and my skin is super smooth and flawless 😍 i suggest that you wash your bedsheets every 2 days or just lay a clean cloth on your pillow so you can wash it every day

Try an oil after your moisturiser - Im using Tret and the oil (Rosehip) PM after moisturiser has really helped with the dryness the following day.
Try using the Nivea Cream.
Brian P Thank you!
@@swinbot No problem at all, if you are still having problems another great product to try is The Ordinary Buffet serum (not with copper peptides) use that AM. It's a great hydration boost and with skin repairing ceramides. Good luck

Please make a skin care routine for skin barrier damage made by the friction of a mask on acne prone skin
OMG I HAVE BEEN STRUGGLING W THIS! PERFECT TIMING
Stop over doing things to your skin and start babying it🙌🏻
I do wish everyone would stop blaming natural ingredients, we use botanicals that have been properly sourced and combined and we have always been able to help the skin and the skins barrier. Natural ingredients and botanicals have been used for centuries to heal the skin and wounds and many articles are showing that they are being used today in hospitals and care facilities. So let’s not demonize natural ingredients.

Also, check out your moisturizer/find a new one if your current one doesn't suit your skin concerns.
friendly sloth I have always used gel-water moisturizers. Even a moisturizer without any actives makes my face red and burn
Try lactic acid when your skin barrier is better. It's very gentle.
@@yorel1239 :( That is very sad, I wish you good luck with finding the products that are right for you! You can do it
Hey, Cassandra.
I needed this video a month ago :D . Even cerave products burned my skin. I had to use Argan oil as moisturizer... I'm healed now tho :) Thanks Cass
And can you believe this ingredient is demonized?! Petrolatum can be such a savior.
DAMN!!
@@hithere8140 Absolutely!
Vaseline is an emergency lifesaver. It literally acts as a temporary barrier on broken skin.
I know I been over drying my skin trying to get rid of some acne popping up around where I wear my mask....I know I just need to step back and go back to basics..but it's so hard 😭😭

You and your channel are Just what I needed in my life!!!!
She’s so beautiful! I have dryness and redness on my eyelid from 3days and this video is something I needed. Thanks a lot lovely❤️

My best solution for eczema and psoriasis or any other skin irritation is oatmeal or epsom salt baths and coconut oil...Cortisone are simply addictive, it's like an endless cycle, the more you use them the higher dose the skin requires to heal itself.
