This is the best to watch so far great run through no fuss. Iv been growing mine in bags and pots for about six years and iv never been disappointed I use ordinary shop bought potatoes 🥔 and I’ve done really well out of them. There’s great satisfaction in growing you own and you don’t need a lot of space. Thanks for the info 🇬🇧🙏🐌🍄
As someone below said, I've read plenty about this, but this film is so clear and helpful! Thanks! Going to go out now and reduce the amount of soil I've covered the tubers with! I've now subscribed !
Love your videos always, just some advice for people growing in containers. I've found earthing up isn't really necessary and if you're not on top of it you could risk frost damage to the exposed shoots. I fill them to the top and they start to come up around the last frost date
I grew potatoes in small pots for two consequential years with no problems. Last summer was absolutely catastrophic; everything just drowned; no matter the drainage. I bought some organic potatoes in winter, let them sprout and I'll try my luck again this year.
Save a few bob, too. Keep some of your crop as next year's seeders and there's you ahead of the game already. One plant from each tuber, one potato from each plant and there's the following year's seeders and so on. A conservative yield of 10lbs of spuds from each plant and _ker-ching,_ as it all adds up. Time saved traipsing to greengrocers, as well. What's not to love about gardening?!
Thank you for this easy to follow guide. Just having my first try at growing my own potatoes in tubs and bags. Looking forward to a good harvest in a couple of months….
Helpful, simple video perfect for a beginner, thanks. We're trying to grow some for the first time - we've got some earlies in potato bags: Duke Of York, Home Guard and some little nobbly Pink Furs. Shoots are just starting to peep up!
I grew sweet potatoes last year in a "pallet box". It was a display box for cacti at a big box store. They were throwing it away. So, I took it home and covered the outside with landscaping fabric. I only planted 4 slips and got about 65 pounds of sweet potatoes. I planted late here. It was July 30. Then, on Halloween, I dug them up. I was shocked. All I did was put them in good soil and made sure they stayed watered. Easiest thing I've ever grown. They looked and tasted far superior to anything I could have bought at the grocery store.
Just make frame or use chicken wire to make round shapes with the landscaping fabric. Do not use pallets. They are treated with pesticides and other toxic chemicals to ward off bugs during transport of goods.
Thank you so much for this brief, concise but very informative video.. Just the right tip that i need to start growing my potato. I super love this vegetable and i cant wait to grow them. Thanks again!! 😊
Fantastic video, I’m so new to growing potatoes, I’m really excited about my new veg garden, I’ve definitely decided on growing most my veggies in containers easier to maintain,,, keep you posted
I have been growing potatoes in bags for about 2 years. I have harvested Dutch Creams, Royal Blues and currently have Russet Burbanks and White Star varieties. One thing I didn't do which you have suggested is to give them some liquid fertiliser. I was disappointed with my Royal Blue harvest so I hope this give me better harvests in the future.
Moved from New England, USA to the southern part and having trouble growing as it gets very hot early in the season and the soil is not great. Chitted 100 Mona Lisa to be grown for the first time in buckets and Bags. Live in Pyrenean France (7b/8a) in a new-to-me mountain home with Last-Frost Date last year of 21st March. Just want to say thank you for being my "go-to" source of tips and tricks
I plant in the ground rather than in bags, because then I don't have to water so much, I can mulch them and keep them cool enough to have good tuber set. It seems like the soil temperatures in pots, for people in warm climates, can get too hot to have the most favorable conditions for potatoes, reducing their yield (not sweet potatoes which like heat, but regular potatoes which like cool soil).. I really like German Butterball for high yields, great storage, and they can produce some real lunkers. Purple Viking are the most beautiful potato I've ever seen and grow well. There are so many potato varieties it's easy to get carried away! : )
I think the idea of planting in bags and containers is for people who don't have the space for potatoes in the ground. I always plant in bags at home and in the ground on my allotment. Happy gardening 😊
Potatoes are best stored in a cool, dry and frost-free place. Keep them in the dark and make sure they are kept in well-ventilated boxes or potato storage sacks made from burlap/hessian. Maincrop varieties of potato noted for their keeping qualities should last for at least two months, possibly longer.

Sarahjane Baxter Just make sure the roots don't get too hot as potatoes with hot roots just don't do well. A roof garden could potentially be too warm for them unless you can shade the bottom of the bag...
I haven't grown them in bulk bags, but there is no reason you couldn't try that. You would be able to grow many more potato plants in each bulk bag of course. And they have good depth to them.
@@GrowVeg Thanks for your advice. I'm new to this and just saw a bag in my garden and the idea came. The only problem might be emptying the thing ! Unless it was used once and sides slit open ? Or make a side into a door flap with eyelets so it could be done up like a corset ? 👍😍
Yes, you could slit the bag open at the sides. These types of bags are often very tricky to dispose of. My only concern would be that the bags would take a LOT of potting soil to fill, which may be quite uneconomical. I would suggest traditional potato growing sacks might be better.
I've grown in homemade chicken wire towers for almost a decade. No digging, no earthing and, once harvested, the soil and straw from the towers are spread on the garden and recycled.

I grew sweet potatoes from plants purchased in Wal-Mart last year I put them in an oil change pan/container I harvested 66 delicious potatoes! This year I'm using the shoots from those potatoes to grow new ones inside two tires!
I would just make sure that the seed potatoes are planted in mid spring (around early April here) to give them enough time. It doesn't matter how chitted they are by that point - just get them planted! :-)
Very informative video. Couple of questions though. 1. What soil type is best recommended for growing sack potatoes? 2. Will it grow in any kind of weather? 3. Can it be grown all year round or is there a season for it? 4. Can one use organic fertilizer (chicken/cow dung) and at what stages? 5. How many weeks/months after planting should I except to start harvesting? Sorry I know I said a couple questions 😃
In answer to your questions Emmanuel: 1. You can use any potting mix, or a mixture of garden compost and garden soil. But lighter, all-purpose potting mix is best. 2. Potatoes will be killed by the frost, so as long as you can avoid frosty conditions they should grow. They prefer it warm, but not very hot - particularly potatoes in sacks. 3. Best to plant in the spring, as the weather is warming up, with a view to harvesting in the summer. In some climates potatoes are also planted later in summer for a crop in mid autumn - so long as frosts can be avoided. 4. You can use organic fertiliser. Best applied very lightly as you add the potting mix. Not essential though. 5. Anywhere from 10 weeks to 20 weeks, depending on what type of potato you are growing.
Amazing. These are very informative videos.Have learnt a lot.I planted my seed a fortnight now,in sunny spot after spreading cattle manure.I noted the sprout drying up as we have had temps above 28 degrees celcius here. I just covered planks on them hoping to revive the sprouting! Will this work?
@@GrowVeg Hi. Please note-When I checked the garden, I noted ants have invaded the planks, so had to quickly remove them all and got the leafy compost which has now turned black and covered the potato seed. We had temp above 25degrees Celsius, and some rain showers late in the afternoon/through the night. Am hopeful they will all sprout now.

We had temp above 25degrees Celsius, and some rain showers late in the afternoon/through the night. Am hopeful they will all sprout now.
Sorry I pressed send before finished, I just kind of popped them in a full trough of soil I had spare but I did top up new stuff from my new grow bags. My 1st ones were white potatoes, ones we usually get from Asda.
My daughter got some red rooster ones and she left some in a bag they had used and this time I've done it through your video so thanks for the stuff I didn't do in 1st place but hopefully they should be okay. I've subscribed because I want to grow some veg and fruit 😁
