Love how opposite these two appear, in any other show or movie they'd be written as the love interests who constantly clash and argue yet realise they are in love at the end. Here, none of that, they get on right away and Ed immediately is besotted with everything that is Stede. Sometimes the 'love all the way through' trope still works like magic 🥰
Yes! I think the ‘they hated each other at first’ or the constantly bickering couple trope can work sometimes but it’s SO overused that it’s really refreshing to have a romance just not do that.
I feel like a lot of it comes also from casting a pair of actors who have been friends for most of their entertainment careers, so, in-turn, it feels like the characters are destined to be together because they immediately feel comfortable and collaborative with each other in a way that they wouldn't be with anyone else.
I am totally not going ballistic and mentally insane because we won't be getting a season 2 for at least another year. I am reacting normally in a healthy manner
Jack just literally doesn't believe in friendship as a concept. Immediately afterwards he says something like "we're pirates and pirates don't have friends - we're all just in various stages of fucking each other over." I hate Jack so much. I've known people like him who are just having a great time while doing nothing but cruel and shitty things. And if you call them on it, they give you one of those fucking non-apologies like "I'm sorry you can't take a joke." Brilliantly written and acted character! Too real.
I used to assume that, when Lucius walked in on Ed staring at Stede when Stede was unconscious in episode 4, Lucius was just scared of Blackbeard, but now I think Lucius's gaydar was just going crazy and he didn't want to ruin the moment
Ed being amazed with literally everything about Stede is hilarious and adorable. He literally fell in love at first sight and y'all can't change my mind
@@jenniferuyemura1573 oh absolutely. He heard stede told him to suck eggs in hell and he was like "I'm gonna find him and I'm gonna kiss him goddammit"
@@jenniferuyemura1573 true, he keeps pursuing him even though everyone thinks it’s weird, clearly ed was absolutely fascinated by him from the start, even before they met
Honestly, there were tells that Ed was in love with Stede from the very beginning, but when he was perfectly content to join the British Navy and shed his identity as Blackbeard, and had no desire to escape, because doing so meant Stede was safe and could stay with him was when it really hit me how deeply in love he was. And then his confession and the kiss... honestly, best canon love story i’ve seen in a long time 🥺🥰
I love how clueless stede is the whole time. Like you know he's infatuated but idk if he's even felt love like this before so of course he'd have no idea what to look for
I love how clueless Stede is about his own natural flirting & his need to clarify his feelings because of how new & natural they felt to him. He didn’t even notice he fell in love. Like please just let me imagine him as an ace icon.
i need to say this im sobbing rn because ed's the happiest he's been and the saddest he's been in one episode and seeing him go from overjoyed to run away with stede to miserable that stede left him forking HURTS
Ed's hopes were dashed. He had just been the bravest he had ever been, in a lifetime of doing brave things daily. He had dared to hope he could change, and have a lot of new possibilities instead of more of the same old life he was so sick of. He was terrified that he honestly didn't deserve, or couldn't attain such tender dreams because he saw himself as unloveable and unworthy of anything soft. To have his affection returned gave him the highest soaring hope he had ever known. It contradicted everything bad his father or anyone else had ever told him about how worthless he was. But to have Stede disappear instead was confirmation that all along it had been hopeless, and that actually Ed really WAS repellant and evil with no trace of goodness, who didn't deserve anything soft, warm, intelligent, kind, or sweet. It broke his heart. That's why he went so feral in season 2. He loved all that stuff he was destroying, and hated all the cold violence he was doing, but he figured that he had just got the message confirming that he couldn't have and didn't deserve anything else. He was trying to wallow in the worst of his life, trying to accept that these were his limits. But he had tasted better things, and would never be satisfied again to live without them. I'm so glad we got to see the whole arc. It's so human, and speaks to so many of us. I've never been a pirate but I sure as hell have had my low points where I was afraid that I didn't deserve the good things I saw and wanted for myself. Afraid that I couldn't be loved as I am, and afraid that I'd have to cramp myself into the role others allowed for me rather than the better hopes I had. In my case I never had a Stede to rescue me, but I was able to find a sort of Stede within myself. I was able to embrace my own permission to do what I wanted and be who I am rather than stay trapped in others' limited view of me. Sorry for the wall of text. It's a subject I've been mulling over since I saw the series, but I only just now put it into words for myself. I don't love pirates. I love the struggle to become something more, even when the change is very painful. Maybe all great changes are always painful. IDK. I know for sure mine was. But I'm glad I was able to do it. I didn't always know I would survive the change. But I did, and I hope others find hope to hang on and change too.

Does anyone realize that this is the absolute best villainous couple upgrade since Bonnie and Clyde? This absolutely works on all levels, and for once the rom-com is done right. As a couple couple, with real chemistry? Heck I put Stede & Ed up there with Ellie and Carl Frederickson or Eve and Wall-E. Certainly if we add fricken clueless to the category, this is the best couple since Aziraphale and Crowley...Sherlock and John and Charles and Erik are the doyennes of the place. To me, that is high praise. Because I actually believe that Stede and Ed do love each other, and they just make sense as a couple and you can see it immediately. And when they kiss, it just makes you smile. Sail on for next season. And the showrunners better get it right! The real Stede and Ed spent the rest of their lives together (awful people that they really were) so we had better get the happily ever after or there will be a mutiny! EDIT. I was mistaken. They were together until Blackbeard inexplicably betrayed Stede and his portion of the crew, and from then on Stede was after revenge (and the Revenge, Blackbeard took the ship) but they never caught up with one another, and Blackbeard got killed by the British and Stede was killed months later. So my point still stands, we want happily ever after !!!

The thing is, Stede lives his whole life with his emotions at the surface. Ed had to find permission to have emotions that weren't all about stabbing people. Ed is overcome by the joy of finding a man who so easily frolics in happiness and comfort, fine fabrics and delicious foods, while Ed's previous highs were only "yay we won the battle and got the treasure and survived the bloodshed.
