As I was born after the war, this was the only Longmarket I knew. It may not have been very beautiful, but on a sunny day it was a very pleasabt space with its young trees. Thanks for posting this - a reminder of the days before Canterbury City Council did its best to turn Canterbury into a theme park.

I remember all of this. Brings back some good memories. I've lived in and around Canterbury all of my life and I still love my home City. Thank you for doing the film and uploading it. 👍🎥🇬🇧

Wow. I remember traffic in the high street. A policeman was on duty outside Boots on the corner of Mercery Lane. The Marlowe theatre was in St Margaret’s Street and a real Post Office on the corner of Stour Street. Thanks for bringing back fond memories. Canterbury is unrecognisable now to the city I grew up in. Stores that have disappeared. Timothy Whites and Mence Smiths, Macfisheries and my favourite Barrett’s toy and record shop. Woolworths and the loose biscuit counter. Happy days. Thanks for the video.

An interesting historical record, thanks for making the film in the first place. What happened to the city? LeFevre’s, Debenhams, Barrett’s, Ricemans and now Nason’s. All no longer to be found in the town centre. It will soon look like just any other big town. Thank God for the cathedral.

Note how quiet it is, there was no Sunday trading, though I think the Halfords near the Beaney Institute always used to open. Just after 4.00 minutes of the clip; the roof of a rover SD1, and a Fiat Fiorino van. Yes, i can remember those two cars always being there.

A hideous building and development although I must say the sense of space around it is better than its replacement.

The only reason to retain a development like the one in this film is to remind people not to build another one

Did they change the Longmarket in two stages? The part where Cafe Rouge (formerly Our Price) had changed in 1994 when my friend was making a video for college but the National Westminster bank and all the shops along to Athena were still there. He was a Dr who fan and used the circles on the wall at the back of the National Westminster Bank as a backdrop to the Tardis!

That's how I remember it. Great to see that old footage. I wonder if the Roman Pavement is still there and open to the public.

If you think this looks bad have a look at Powell & Pressburger's A Canterbury Tale filmed in 1944 and get an idea of what the Longmarket rose from!

anyone know the name of the cool record shop that was on lower bridge street in the 90’s?

  • @ThonColinFilms

Really 1990? I'm not so sure. I was in Canterbury in 1988 and the Longmarket shops were still there but the bit in the centre was replaced with the development we now have- Cafe Rouge but then it was Our Price. I visited Canterbury in 1986 and it was still all there- I had coffee up the steps of the 'shoe box' bit. But by 1988 it has definitely gone.

omg but it looks so old! Was it really just 1990? I was guessing mid-70s!! rofl
But, the city looks completely different...

Really with them phone boxes like that?
And also some of the shops + cars that were not even made let alone out in the mid 70's lol
Also it does say this is the last day before it got shutt off due tothe builders moving in
mean reason why it is really untidy is because there is loads of building/pipe/water works etc going on

    • @hoppimike

@@mikekaraoke I wasn't saying it was actually '70s I was just saying it's amazing how much things have changed.

@@hoppimike I know you didn't think it was actually 70's, But I was just saying why it looked so messy in them parts that were filmed because it does say this is the last day before it got shutt off due tothe builders moving in

I remember when this horrible development shut and it is 1990 as the new shops opened by 1992.

Forgot how hideous it was......good gawd> though I would of prefered something less neo-classical to replace it and to have left a better view of the Cathedral. It is so much better than this

looks a lot better design wise then than the awful, boring concrete jungle there now. Canterbury has nothing to offer these days apart from an overpriced cathedral and the occasional pub. It's just nail bars, bubble tea outlets and poor quality burger joints. All the decent stores closed long ago and most of the high street is boarded up and full of homeless..
