Thanks for the detailed review. Had an L2000 that I either bought from or sold to yourself, also had one of those SB2 basses with no tone control for a while. Good instruments, might be tempted by one of these in the future. Thanks again & keep the reviews coming 👍
The best way to understand the different wiring options is to tap pole pieces with a screwdriver to confirm what's what Position 1 sounded like single coil Position 2 sounded more like parallel Position 3 sounded like series which is generally a bit louder and thicker. Thanks for doing the review 👍
Thanks Martin I didn’t have one to hand, but using the same method I’ve confirmed position 1 is parallel Position 2 is single coil Position 3 is series Cheers Mick
It’s definitely MOSTLY its own thing, but that MFD is not a small pickup either. It has a unique, distinct poky midrange all of its own and cuts through the band mix in a similar way to a Stingray, because of pickup placement, I’d say. But it doesn’t sound exactly like a Stingray, as you say But I suppose it was arguably an evolution of that idea, as it came later Still, for the money, I can’t fault it.
I have the Black Frost version of the Kiloton Tribute, it looks so badass, plays like a dream and I personally love the way it sounds. The build quality is way higher than similarly priced basses I tried, and did I mention how cool it looks?? The full humbucker (parallel) sound is a little too boomy for my taste so I rarely use it, but the series and single coil sounds are awesome. I find myself switching back and forth between those two depending on the situation, with the tone about half way up. I like the single coil sound for more melodic lines, I find that it has a lot of definition, and you can clearly hear the pitch of the notes even in the lower register, so I gravitate towards this one for practice. The series sound sits in the background and provides a warmer feel which can sound a little muddier on its own, but I tend to like this one more in the context of a full mix. The signal output of the pickup is extremely hot for a passive bass (and even hotter in the full humbucker position). This isn't really a pro or a con since you can always adjust the volume, but maybe something to keep in mind if you use effects like overdrive that depend heavily on the input level. I always keep the volume knob on the bass all the way up. Having the tone dialed all the way back to 0 is a pretty unusable sound in my opinion, but once you get about 1/4 up and above it sounds great. Overall, I love this bass and I would highly recommend it.
Really interesting Mick. I've never been drawn to the Stingray set up. For no reason at all. I do have a Stingray type pick up to go in my short scale headless build when I ever get round to finishing it! But there'll be no controls as with my last one. I just use my amps to get the sound I want. As an amateur it works for me. 👍✌️❤️
Very cool bass. I’ll have to check out more about G&L. I like the look of it a lot. Like a cross between a P-bass and a Stingray which makes sense given the company’s connection to Leo Fender.
Thats funny I just bought a G and L 2000 Tribute and the thing kicks ass! The pickups are super versatile, so much top and bottom end you can get out of them. Sweetwater actually let me buy a new one for demo price so it was 650 along with a $210 dollar gift card so it only costed me $495 so its such a steal lol totally worth getting a little less groceries then usual haha
Honestly that’s a great bass. And a great price. Health to play it! The only change I would make to an L2000 for me would be to have a pick-up pan pot instead of a switch. One of my favourite positions is both pickups on but the front one rolled off just a little Otherwise it’s got everything.
Yeah, that’d be lovely. They’re using cherry to avoid CITES type restriction, I imagine. Ebony would certainly add to the cost It would be far cheaper to buy one secondhand and get another to add a board for you, I’d say The standard fretless is €1100 or something
Of course, my immediate curiosity, knowing who worked at G&L, is to ask if another version of this model was assembled with a split coil pickup in the neck position. This edition is earth-shattering on its own, but it’s not difficult for me to imagine how much rumble would come out of a different version with that change.
They did the SB-1 and SB-2 P and P/J respectively The MFD pickups, too! Absolutely fab pickups But nothing with a humbucker and p in it so far as I know
I do describe it in the review. It’s neither More Jazz than Precision though Deeper, rounder, altogether more comfortable Think of it as jazz meets stingray.
Beautiful bass and an excellent review/demo! I've been really interested in the fretless version lately. :) I'm curious though - what are those strap locks that you're using on this bass? I'm not sure I've seen anything like those.
Thanks so much! The fretless is a good bit more expensive - over a grand! But I’d love one all the same :) The strap locks are these amzn.eu/d/ig1esaD They’re not too bad at all

If I were to get an SB I’d put a tone in it
Can’t remember either, Liamo! Sure it’s hard to keep track of the stuff that passes around
:)
Great video, thank you! I've been curious about these for a good while. Liked the idea of putting a lusithand filter preamp in
Oh that’d be interesting to hear
You could always put something between the bass and amp, either
Would give you a flavour of what it might sound like

@@mindhead2005 OK cool Nice sounding bass. Doesn't quite nail the Ray sound but the MusicMan humbucker is humongous!

There’s no issue with that approach at all for me, Springy. When you think how little people actually use their controls really, it can make sense!

Personally, I think G&L are the best “Fenders” ever made, if you follow

L1000, if I understood your question correctly
@@davidphillips7740 is that not a bigger body? Like an L2000 or 1500?
These have the smaller SB body
Not really,@@davidphillips7740, but thank you all the same.
Beautiful bass indeed!
Thanks bud
Thnx Mick from Arizona
Thanks for dropping by, Tim!
Hope you understood the accent! 😀😀
Great review. I've seen many mixed reviews about the tribute Kiloton, leaning more on the negative side. This one looks pretty nice tbh.
Thanks for watching! It really is a lovely bass! I don’t see anything negative myself especially at the price point
Can you describe the neck? Chunky? Thin? How would you compare it to a P or a J?
I do describe it in the review.
It’s neither
More Jazz than Precision though
Deeper, rounder, altogether more comfortable

That kiloton has a bad reputation 😉
Thanks the word out on the town!
