To understand the literal meaning of the term, 30+ years later, this might help:
"The Distant Early Warning Line, also known as the DEW Line or Early Warning Line, was a system of radar stations in the northern Arctic region of Canada, with additional stations along the north coast and Aleutian Islands of Alaska (see Project Stretchout and Project Bluegrass), in addition to the Faroe Islands, Greenland, and Iceland. It was set up to detect incoming bombers of the Soviet Union during the Cold War, and provide early warning of any sea-and-land invasion." (Wikipedia)

I don’t think I’ve ever heard a band more “on the same page” than Rush. In such complete and total unity of sound and purpose between the three legendary players. Each song is just beautiful to experience…

@@rbjax2001 '81 was my favorite year of rush. Moving Pictures & Exit Stage Left was a period where Alex began using a little more Fender guitars while getting the best imo sounds out of Gibsons I've ever heard. It was that in between period after the minimalistic guitar/Amp setup and before the synth heavy / polished effects precessors sounds. I liked all three but prefer that goldilocks 1977-81 period.

He never needed to have crazy extended soloing to prove he is a master musician but I do wish some solos with that guitar tone in the 80’s were extended a few more bars lol including marathon where he could have really went wild . Look for truth in the lyrics:
      An ill wind comes arising
Across the cities of the plain
There’s no swimming in the heavy water -
No singing in the acid rain
      Red alert
      Red alert
It’s so hard to stay together
      Passing through revolving doors
We need someone to talk to
And someone to sweep the floors -
      Incomplete
      Incomplete
The world weighs on my shoulders
But what am I to do?
You sometimes drive me crazy -
      But I worry about you
I know it makes on difference
      To what you’re going through
But I see the tip of the iceberg -
      And I worry about you…
      Cruising under your radar
      Watching from satellites
Take a page from the red book -
      Keep them in your sights
      Red alert
      Red alert
      Left and rights of passage
      Black and whites of youth
      Who can face the knowledge
That the truth is not the truth?

Rush is one of those unique bands with a unique sound an doesn't appeal to most hard rock/prog rock fans. In the 80's, liking Rush often got you labeled as a nerd or egg head, and back then I couldn't figure out why. Sure, I was isolated a bit for loving Rush, but they gave me a confidence and strength that I never knew I had, because I loved Rush, but couldn't care less about being popular. Once I heard "Subdivisions", as a kid; I was hooked.

Good Lord so much to unpack......as a Rush since 76 who saw them a _bunch_ of times and consider them tied for my #1 fave band of all time, I still keep noticing new things in the vid. And for ref, I still have the '84 tour program (saw the GUP tour 2 nights in a row at the Worcester Centrum and even still have the tee shirt, though I'm way too fat now to ever wear it again....), notice around 3:17..........and then look up what the DEW line was (and more importantly, _where_ it was_ . .) . . freakin' Rush, as was always the case, miles ahead of most others......

I feel the same about early Rush. I too could never get into what they were doing in the 80's and 90's. The last album that I feel is truly great Rush material would be Signals - but even that one is a stretch. My favourite album is Farewell to Kings. Hemispheres and Fly By Night are locked in 2nd and 2112 and their debut Rush are tied for 3rd. That said, Caress of Steel is a fine album too! So many amazing songs!
Like you said, 1970's had some killer Rush music!
