Here for Philosophy class inwhich we are discussing communication and verbal thinking/processing and critical thinking. I find that connotative meanings bridge the realities of people because of our understanding of our own experience from which empathy comes from, which helps to connect better than denotative meanings, which don't express the vastness of the language we speak in, thus really not creating that connection we seek when we seek to communicate.
Thank you so much for this! This helped me a lot. My teacher asked me to give the denotation and connotation meaning of social media and use it in a poetic line. My only problem now is to make a poetic line about its denotative and connotative meaning.
Good summary. I'd just add the element of an *_emotional_* implication to the connotative side of the definition. We tend to have implied shades of meaning that lean positive or negative for many important words.
Thank you. At 53 I am just writing my final exams as an undergraduate. Tomorrow I will be writing ENG 434- literary stylistics. I have a better idea now.
Thank you very much for this video! I'm helping to write a textbook for children explaining this concept and this helped me to understand it better. This was incredibly clear. I plan to use that quote from your former professor. I laughed outloud at that one; it hit the nail on the head! I was also trying to figure out some tip to help the students remember which was which-- I shoulda thought of that one. On behalf of the hundreds of children who will read this book, I thank you! :)
Thanks! I meant to say that the textbook has a unit on this concept. :) It's going to be in Level 2 in this series. www.chcweb.com/catalog/ByGradeLevel/FourthGrade/TheTreasureTroveofLiteratureandtheArtofUnderstandingIt,Level1/product_info.html
Now I'm able to reason why politicians are able to impact our minds before the election they build a connotative connect with people and afterwards strictly denotative (dictionary)..😅 thank you for the explanation 💙
It was just awesome 😍 .....I was just looking for a way to somehow get the difference between those words and you gave me example like cheery on a cake ......thanks dude Keep teaching , I can understand things better now .
I am here because I'm trying to understand more about connotation in English. I have difficult time figuring what the meaning of "The camp rose to its feet as one man!". But still couldn't figure it.
Is it safe to say that connotative meaning is more like a cultural view, what people feel about a particular word? As you said, the word bureaucracy is hated where I come from.
Thanks for the content Alex. This information will be especially helpful when taken into consideration of the audience the communication is being delivered to as different cultures and backgrounds have their own view on issues.
Denotative : المعنى الصريح (The basic meaning) Connotative : المعنى المخفي (The added meaning or the shade of meaning) *According to our doctor of course*
Sir denotative means positive meaning of a word that always follows dictionary features. But connotative means;it has a impact of cultural view point. Am I right Sir?
Close but not exactly. Some words have negative literal, denotative meanings. Denotative does not mean positive. And, connotative meanings can be both positive, negative, or they can evoke another emotion or shade of meaning. Sometimes, those meanings are tied to culture but not strictly speaking.
Grade level? Well, I heard these words first in high school but it also depends on what classes people take. Certainly I heard it again in college. I'll say most important words have both connotative and denotative means but so many words are just ordinary that it make little practical difference to try to decode the different meanings.
Sir connotative means positive and negative meaning in sentence but in denotative we use dictionary word meaning sentence is that I understand right???
That's pretty close. Positive and negative are simplifications of the emotional charge words have. The point is that connotative meanings are more subjective and there are shades of meaning we experience when we hear words that don't show up in the dictionary definition.
Hm. Not sure what you mean. Connotative means are not universal. So, the way I feel about a word and what it communicates on an emotional level may not be the same as the others understand the word. But, to answer your question, no I don't personally have a describable connotative meaning for the word score other than it leans toward a positive emotion because "scoring" in a sports game is a positive experience.
In the US (where I'm from) the emotional association with the word taxes leans to the negative side. Just bringing the word up in conversation can spoil the mood.
I would agree that up until about 25 years old, I found the word simply boring, not a strong emotion. Now that I pay LOTS of taxes, it has stronger emotions attached to if for me. You are correct, nonetheless, that words may have a strong emotional charge for some people and not others depending upon their experiences.
🤦♀️To denote something is to indicate or designate some data or matter. The word NOTE is audible in the word, but yes D is for Dictionary. What is being taught in American schools? Then the example for Connotative is American Propaganda; relating taxes that help support our children's schools, our infrastructure and public services to theft, war and government over reaching. 🙄😔
Denotation means literal meaning and Connotation means emotional meaning.
Thaaaaaaaanks
Thanks

Denotation--- Literal meaning of a word
Connotation--- additional associated sense or implication of a word
Good summary. I'd just add the element of an *_emotional_* implication to the connotative side of the definition. We tend to have implied shades of meaning that lean positive or negative for many important words.
@@alexanderlyon Very few people stick to these rules
The word Bureaucracy has negative connotations to me
thank you really made it more simplier especially knowing that dennotative and dictionary both start with D

Is it safe to say that connotative meaning is more like a cultural view, what people feel about a particular word? As you said, the word bureaucracy is hated where I come from.
Yes, I think you are accurate. Our connotative means are tied to culture. They could be even more localized than that, though.
You taught better then the teachers
thanks Alex. I appreciate the brief, straighforward explanation!

Yes, exactly right! You'd have to know who your message is for to chose the best way to say it.
After watching your video sir, I think that all words have both connotative and denotative meanings ! Is it right?
Yes, correct.
@@alexanderlyon thank you Professor , I guess there is connection between the social meaning and the connotative meaning
Word
denotation = narrow meaning / object
connotation = broad meaning /felling *copied*
Can animal, existence, and circles be examples of connotation?
Sure. Just about any word can have a connotative meaning.
Thankyouuu , im having a hard time to understand this topic
Thankful, I found this video. I really had a difficult time finding the real meaning of it.
hi there, i really need some help, i need to identify some images in the movie Joker that has some connotation

Denotative what we can see
Connotative is what is Beyond the superficial meaning (our background)
Am i right sir ?
What is denotative and connotative meaning in english and arbic
No idea. I don't speak Arabic.
Denotative : المعنى الصريح
(The basic meaning)
Connotative : المعنى المخفي
(The added meaning or the shade of meaning)
*According to our doctor of course*
Hi! Sir can you explain connotation increases, the denotation decrease and conversely.
I don't think it works that way. The meanings don't have that type of relationship. Interesting question, though.
Thank you for the clear video.... 💚

It's a good question but it is really a matter of opinion. They are both important.
