    I've been running my Deere hard with the easy change system for 5 years now and no problems, that system was extensively tested before they put it on the market. There are additives in that system that condition the old oil and the filter it self is twice as big as a normal filter, all I had to do is top mine off one time. Every weekend mechanic thinks their way is the best way, I get it.

    I feel the 5 minute is a better filter than the conversion kit. You get more filter and more overall oil because the case and the filter hold oil. Why not leave the better filter on and just drain 100 percent of the oil out. Full oil change and a better filter that cleans and cools better. Little more expensive but we aren’t doing lawn mower oil changes that often as a homeowner

    Thanks for the tip regarding removal of the side panel. On my first replacement of the Easy change cartridge, I could not fully turn it 90 degrees to take it out, even with a filter wrench. Once the side panel removed, I was able to position the wrench at the base of the cartridge and to remove it easily.

    After I seen how much oil was left in it, I bought the conversion kit at John Deere for $20 dollars, then a filter and 2 quarts of oil for $30 dollars and I am happy. Leaving that much bad oil in the mower will ruin it very fast. Very easy to change over. I had more trouble trying to get the quick change filter on.

    Completely agree, leaving over half the used, dirty oil in the machine every year is nonsense. Spend the money for the conversion kit because it's cheaper in the long run. (it's about the price of one of those quick-change filters, so will start paying for itself after the first oil change) And it also gives you peace of mind.

      Just add the drain tube and drain oil at the time of filter change.

    • @IndRepair
      @IndRepair  2 місяці тому

      That would solve half the issue. The other issue is the price of the oil/filters at change time (along with price of excess beyond what is in thr filter). Thanks for watching!

    I am on the 3rd season running my E120. When I first bought the lawn tractor, the 30-second oil filter was $39. Now that same filter is $50 and according to the owners manual, the filter is to be changed, "Yearly or Every 50 Hours (Whichever Comes First)".
    This season, I decided to drain the oil from the crank case. Despite changing the filter per the manufacturers direction for the previous 2 seasons, that oil came out black which confirmed my cause for concern over engine reliability and longevity with the 30-second system.
    I have since replaced it with the conventional system (available for $25 online). It should be noted that a conventional oil filter and 2 quarts of synthetic oil costs half that of the John Deere filter.
    When I did the conversion, I used a siphon pump to drain as much oil as I could from the crankcase through the dipstick tube which significantly reduced spillage when replacing the filter and installing the drain tube.
    This got me thinking, for owners who do not want to deal with draining the oil through the drain tube, they can siphon the oil as I did. This will remove some 95% of the old oil. Lifting the left side of the mower will accumulate the oil toward the dipstick tube will help siphon even more out.

      Good info! Conversion or not buying this set up seems like may be the way to go on this. Save some money!

  • @bizboomer
    @bizboomer 11 місяців тому +4

    Perhaps this system is aimed at the mechanically challenged consumer, who buys equipment from a big box store with no parts or service department. There are consumers who have no business with any OPE (outdoor power equipment) and should hire their work done. Consider a follow-up video showing the conversion kit install. Thanks and great as always!

    • @IndRepair

      Thanks for watching! I liked the idea when they came out, just figured it would be executed a little better and changing more than 1/3rd of the oil. Might as well say "never change your oil again"

    • @vtramell3196
      @vtramell3196 9 місяців тому +1

      I read an article a couple years back which stated that John Deere implemented the system because many owners neglected routine oil changes finding it to messy or cumbersome.

    • @dennisshaughnessy5612
      @dennisshaughnessy5612 2 місяці тому

      That's a little harsh, pretty much all consumers were naive about using power equipment at one time. I know I was, but doing stuff anyway (and making the odd mistake) is the only way a person is going to learn.

    What does JD think you're going to do with the expended oil/filter? In the trash to contaminate the landfill? I'd be surprised that places that recycle used oil are going to want to deal with those metal containers filled with oil. They won't have the time to drain every one that arrives.

      Yes, that filter is $55.99 at Lowe’s plus tax. Good idea to Chang to conventional system. I use the Briggs & Stratton long filters on my Kohler engine. They fit John Deere too. Kawasaki has a different filter. John Deere Oil Filters are made by B&S. You pay for the name. Same with a Kohler filter. Pay for the name, same filter. My Kohler Command has 1085 hours and never any trouble. I use Valvoline 10W30 conventional oil.
