  • The grafting examples show a Loquat but the grafting techniques applied in the video can be used on most evergreen fruit trees to change varieties. Loquat is an excellent evergreen fruit tree that has hundreds of different cultivars.
    If the one you bought or have grown from a seed is not very good and you already have an established tree, you can change the cultivar by grafting a new variety.
    You just have to follow a few simple steps detailed in this video.
    The best cultivars of Loquat (Eriobotrya japonica) have a very sweet and slightly acidic fruit of excellent quality. The flavor is very good and quite peculiar - like a strange mix of mango, citrus and peach.
    Even if you are on a zone that it’s not suited for this fruit tree (it flowers and develops its fruit in the winter), it’s such a beautiful tree that often is cultivated by is ornamental value alone.

    If you are in a zone where the loquat can survive in the winter you can grow one from seeds. If the resulting variety is not that good, you can try to obtain a few scions of selected cultivars and graft the established tree as I show in this video. Loquat is an excellent evergreen fruit tree that has hundreds of different cultivars and has a very good ornamental value.

    I very much enjoy watching your videos. I don't live in a zone where loquats can survive so I never payed attention to them, but I thoroughly enjoyed learning about them through your videos.

    Your videos are so encouraging to me. It is a stretch growing them here in zone 7a, so I need to bring the potted loquat trees indoors during the winter to get fruit in the spring. Now that I have gotten fruit, I want more! You describe the flavor well. Very worthwhile. I am building a lean-to greenhouse in a protected, south-facing area so I can keep them protected for the winter. I will be using these grafting techniques to place cuttings from my known varieties onto both wild and known variety seedling rootstock to speed up fruit development. Thanks for the great content.

    Thank you for your free, quality education. I discovered that the cuttings are very difficult to root (attempted several times in different seasons over two years, even with rooting hormones). I hope to get other varieties someday.

    • @JSacadura

      Its easier to plant the seeds to obtain seedlings. Most times, the fruit from the seedlings is small and a bit bitter, but sometimes you can have a new, acceptable, good eating variety. Be prepared to wait quite a few years for the seedling to start producing fruits, though.

      An adult Loquat can resist quite low and high temperatures (usual range is 10-104ºF, -12-40ºC), but the fruits will spoil when the low temperatures approach 28ºF (-2ºC)

    • @JSacadura
      @JSacadura  2 роки тому +2

      It's a handmade grafting knife made in Portugal by the craftsman Gilberto Aveleda, in a small town, called Palaçoulo (know for their knife making craftsmen). Here a few grafting knives similar to the one I'm using - navalhas.pt/pesquisa?controller=search&s=enxertia. But I also graft with the more common Victorinox/Felco budding models. Tina and Opinel are also known brands of grafting knives. With adequate sharpening they all do their job.

      Loquat can be planted directly in the soil. It really doesn't need a rootstock, if you don't mind a slightly bigger tree.

    I’d like your advice on a common dilemma. Your favourite apple or plum is dying slowly. It has a few weak 2 mm new growths. You have missed the dormant phase of any root stock through lack of foresight. What’s the next alternative ? Is there one?

    • @JSacadura
      @JSacadura  2 роки тому

      You can try lateral grafting. It works well with tiny scions and the rootstocks doesn't have to be dormant. To know more about this technique, check min 10.22 of the following video - ua-cam.com/video/tFWvZzMv2Io/v-deo.html
