I think some wages should be added for other staff working on the farm. I see wages is zero in this calc, relief milkers?

Very worthwhile exercise! As you say it doesn’t really matter how you choose to come up with your cost of production just as long as you do more or less the same thing every year, we have been using the same method since 1997 and it works pretty well. Strangely it’s the overdraft that is more efficient at identifying the margins in real time but by comparing year on year in retrospect it confirms what you should already know! We use an abbreviated version to give us monthly feedback and we find that very important , like last year in November we discovered that our output was not meeting costs in our spring calving portion of the herd so we dried off those cows early to reduce our losses and by doing so we left that herd in excellent form to deal with the vagrancy’s of last spring ( totally accidentally but luckily) and now that we are approaching dry off again ( some next week) we can see that our output for this portion of the herd has increased by 50 kg of solids per head in comparison to the average of the last 5 years ( last year was the average of the previous 5 years) and by the time they are all dry it will probably be c. 70 kg . Having a good idea of your current cost of production is vital when it comes to making decisions around production. Your videos are without a doubt the best dairy videos on UA-cam, any progress on the guidance system? Let us know when you will have them available.

Very good detail. Very good point about comparing your own yr on yr figures rather than trying to compare with another farmer.

Great to see the detail behind the figures. Do milk solid % have any influence on your milk price ?

Well done and a useful essential exercise. Having worked in the dairy feed sector I wonder if you are aiming to.increase the milk from forage number , I would like to think with you making your own silage with the ability to cut and harvest at the optimum time your milk from forage could improve, thus reducing your concentrate use and expense.

Very interesting what your costs are like compared to our cost of production here in New Zealand

Could you make a video on how you calculate a cash flow forecast and what you use it for?

Sorry to hear about the TB Andrew. I hope your speech goes well for you. How big an audience are you expecting. I don't agree with CAFRE benchmarking as it doesn't matter how big the data set is if the principle behind the data is wrong. I was glad to see it stopped.

Is the 71 hectares correct for the Dairy cows? Just your overall profit indicates your farming around 134 hectares? Good video.

Should the likes of drainage not be costed over something like 20 years?

Have you been approached to give your herd bovaer which apparently reduces the amount of methane emissions?

Why do you allow the heifer enterprise to lose money some years? Why not work out the cost for it and transfer that value to the dairy enterprise as the purchase price per heifer therefore heifer enterprise on paper breaks-even each year and does not skew the main enterprise?

Are ye going to to be paid on milk solids in the near future Andrew ?
For comparison. We’re paid on milk solids here and that’s what we chase
1300l less sold per cow here compared to you but just 100€ per cow less in milk sales in monetary terms
1.2t meal fed vs 2.26t. When I compare our milk and meal figures to yours we ended up with 123€ per cow more than you. And I wouldn’t be happy with our meal usage. It’s too high imo.
I think you’re seriously lacking milk sales for what feed is going into the cows.
