Hi Abe, good call, it does sound like that Iggy song. Also the shambolic guitar solo reminds me of late 70s post-punk band Swell Maps (and of course The Fall).

Leaving the kettle on doesn't make sense. The vast majority of kettles I've seen in people's houses, have been electric, automatic kettles. They turn themselves off automatically once they get up to temperature. You can't turn them back on again, or leave them on, they will always switch off when they get up to temperature. It's not quite boiling, but apparently a good cup of tea / coffee uses water at some temperature or other, that's less than 100C. This is partly useful because water above 100C would be in it's gaseous state, under normal atmospheric pressure, and would cause severe scalding and burns to anyone it comes into contact with.
So, less than boiling. Then it switches off and the water gets cooler. Plus there likely wouldn't be enough water in for a second cup, people generally make sure there's like a cup and a half in the kettle before they start. You can top it up of course. It's wasteful to heat more water than you're gonna use so you should keep your kettle down to just more than a cup full, or 2 cups if you've got someone who also likes tea. Or perhaps 3, depends on your living arrangements, who's going to be around, and how much they like hot drinks. Maybe you've got a tea rota. Still people would often rather heat more water than they need, wasting the energy as the unused water just cools down again. Just beacause it's easier than pouring the excess away. Even though it will take longer to heat that excess water. I keep saying "boil" and deleting it, even so the verb for what people do with kettles and water in them is usually "boil" even though you actually don't, ever. So it's "heat".
So people will heat excess water over and over. I suppose in winter that heat might warm the house a little, whether that's useful or not.
Anyway the other option is a gas kettle. Or, side-note, a kettle with no heating elements. That includes "gas kettles". Just a metal container with a spount and an insulated handle. Since you can use them on electric cookers too, as well as fires. A kettle. Like kettles have been for, surely, centuries, millennia probably, I wonder if the ancient Romans or Greeks had hot drinks? They must have had kettles for something.
If you have one of those, a "manual" kettle I suppose, on a cooker, you *could* "leave the kettle on". But it would be a bad idea, ranging even to a terrible one! Once it boils dry (and it really would boil), the kettle will start warping and taking damage, and then who knows what else? It might end up boinging off somewhere and setting something alight, I dunno. Danger! And then there's the unattended heat of the cooker, you shouldn't leave cookers unsupervised for too long. So leaving the kettle on just seems like a crazy, dangerous idea. Where it's even possible, which mostly it isn't.
At least in Britain. Apparently Americans tend to have less of the automatic jug kettles cos their mains is 110V and can't supply enough power to work a decent kettle like the 3KW one. They do exist over there but I don't know how common they are. From looking online they seem smaller, which is more efficient I suppose, just heating one or two cups and not 5 or 6. Over here, a cuppa is a social occasion, and 6 people sat round your house require 6 cups of tea at the very least.
So don't leave your kettle on. Get it into your brain that you should NOT leave the kettle on.
Also that man wasn't Mark E Smith and his paperwork was bollocks.

Yorkshire Ripper reference at 0:45. Suttcliffe had a similar message in the cab of his truck when they finally arrested him. It read: "IN THIS TRUCK IS A MAN WHOSE LATENT GENIUS IF UNLEASHED WOULD ROCK THE NATION, WHOSE DYNAMIC ENERGY WOULD OVERPOWER THOSE AROUND HIM: BETTER LET HIM SLEEP?"

Wow. Is that a quote from somewhere? Sure Peter didn't make it up himself?!? He never seemed that bright, certainly not literate. Although there doesn't seem to be much interview material from him around the time. Still I can understand the police would want to keep all that to themselves while they were working on prosecuting him. Nowadays you end up with press conferences for serial killers, I just think Sutcliffe got bundled from van to van.
Is it a quote from somewhere, and are you sure it was in his cab? See the problem is, it implies that the man driving the truck, is asleep... Your problem's right there. Was it a sticker you could buy in motorway service stations? Did Peter actually put it there or was the truck shared? Truck drivers don't always have their "own" truck, either literally, or in the sense of one allocated exclusively to them by the transport company that owns the truck. Other people might have driven it, depends on the circumstances and I can't remember.
I do have a relative who was a truck driver at that time, though, and lived in Yorkshire. He was fully questioned as a subject. Anyone with any vague hope of being the Ripper, the police got in and put through their paces. Well, except they had Peter in like 3 times and let him go even though his interviews were really dodgy. I suppose the police's attitude might've been to get through the "suspects" as fast as possible cos there were loads of them. But that led to them now paying proper attention to any of them. Even though they might have been sure they'd meet the killer through the process, after all that was the whole point. But they let Sutcliffe go after a brief chat about killing prostitutes being every man's religious duty, and how to hide bodies as a truck driver.
Eventually Sutcliffe was caught by a complete fluke. Police pulled his cab over, I think for parking reasons. He had his hammer on him. He asked if he could go piss behind a nearby wall cos he was desperate (a copper won't let you do that these days!). While he was having his pretend wee, he dumped the hammer. A PC came to the site of the alleged wee and found the hammer, evidence, you're nicked mate, etc.
Something like that, that's a bad explanation but essentially true.
      Anyway yeah that quote....

Who in their right mind hasn't thought that they might be Mark E Smith at some time or other? Absolutely love this. BTW the bit at the end is from John Humble's “Wearside Jack” hoax when he pretended to be the Yorkshire Ripper, confusing police and sending them on a wild goose chase, only with MES's name added to the end. At least I think it is, or a reasonable abridgement of the content.

MES once did a song with The Fall, well really it was a spoken-word thing, but he'd brought my granny with her bongos so it was all above board. Part of the words mention "Fred West's sweaty family".
To be fair not all of Fred West's family knew what he did, and most of his kids were abused by him and Rose, including the one he murdered and bricked up in the house somewhere. So it was OK for them to go on TV and the media were _desperate_ to get them when the actual family of such a notorious and weird serial killer were available, who'd lived with him day by day being his children. And they might've been a bit sweaty, Fred and Rose had that '70s look about them, and that includes looking sweaty on camera.
Anyway what am I talking about? Oh yeah the serial killer thing. Originally I'd thought it was Peter Sutcliffe's sweaty family. But it wasn't. The song, or poem, or whatever it is, is called "The CD In Your Hand". It's quite good. Then followed by "Life Just Bounces" but that's on a particular CD my mate burned for me so that's not relevant to other people.
