The writing in this show is just so good. Zuko goes down his dark path because of a selfless act (trying to protect his people) while Aang's journey starts with a selfish act (running away). And they're both just trying to regain their honor and place in the world. The parallels to these two is so fascinating, even this early on in the show.
Something that makes Zuko's banishment even more cruel is that the Avatar hadn't been seen for 100 years, everyone pretty much assumes the avatar is gone yet Ozai still made that Zuko's condition for return, something that for all anyone knew would never happen. It was essentially a lifelong banishment just with a more cruel nearly impossible goal to dangle in front of Zuko knowing he would probably never get it.
Arrow tattoos denote one who's fully mastered Airbending, so Aang having his at the age of *12* is a clear sign that he was a child prodigy even before learning of his identity as the Avatar.
I think they mention it in one of the comics, but to earn your Airbending tattoos you need to master 24 different techniques. Aang mastered 23 of them, and invented a new one, the Air Scooter that he rides around on. At age 12. This kid is unbelievably talented.
@@crabcrab3048 Yes, but you dont need to master every single one to become a master airbender in the eyes of the air nation. Kind of like Master Jedi in Star Wars you only need to fully master 3 Lightsaber styles of the 7 to be considered a true master.
What has been revealed about Uncle Iroh up to this point: He is the brother of the current Firelord and retired Fire Nation General known as The Dragon of the West. Iroh's big military accomplishment we've heard about was to lay seige to Ba Sing Se (the Earth Kingdom capital) for 600 days. While Iroh did get further than any other Fire Nation commander and break through the city's outer wall, the siege ended in defeat. As Iroh put it, "After so many days away from home, my men were tired, and I was tired." He's also a goofy tea loving uncle.

That was the Fire Lord. It was the same shot from episode 8, when they were talking about him. The different nations' names go like this: Fire Nation (Fire Lord), Air Nomads (they don't have a formal hierarchy. The top Air Sage, I guess?), Water Tribe (Water Chief) and Earth Kingdom (Earth King).
Out of all of them Fire Nation seems to have best organization. Earth Kingdom looks more like bunch of ancient town-states, because they have more towns with their own kings (like king Bumi for example) and many free area between those towns
Arrows are “Awarded” to masters. Aang mastered most of the tenants and then created a new technique (air scooter) which granted him his title n arrows.
I love how neel talks about what if it was pure luck for who chose avatar relics, having chance of them being a fake avatar. if I remember correctly, it was either talked about in one of the episodes or in the comics, there was once a false avatar
Aang was the youngest airbending master at that time hence his tattoos (only masters are given their tattoos). He is a prodigy. Also, yes there are sub categories to each bending art and you'll learn of some of them as u watch the show.
@3:26 Some people remember their dreams better than others, but you can improve it if you want by getting in the habit of writing down as much as you remember when you first wake up. I have lucid dreams from time to time, meaning I'm aware that I'm dreaming and can usually control my own actions but not the overall dream itself. It feels really weird when it happens, but I usually remember those better than normal.
Zuko saying that the safety of the crew does not matter, is him trying to 'redeem' himself for what he 'should' have said in the war meeting, but in the end, when it comes to actual choices who he really is comes out and he saves the helmsman.
I really appreciate pausing the video when you guys are talking so that you don't miss anything! Also really like the many mentions of the redirecting of the lightning, that stuff was indeed insane. I remember seeing that for the first time and being like WHAT
Lol when reactors say they see why Zuko was banished in the beginning of the episode. Then 360 by the end We also have to remember that not only has he been banished from his home. And has been given what was supposed to be an impossible task. Basically making it so he can't come home. But he's also only 16. He's still a child and has experienced a lot of trauma. Even kids under normal circumstances can be bratty. Let alone in his situation
The tragedy is also that with Aang being stuck in the ice rather than dying it meant he couldn’t reincarnate and oppose the firelord in the 100 years between.
The way the Fire Lord sent his only son on a search to find the avatar with his honor on the line… knowing no one had seen the avatar in 100 years. He definitely didn’t want his son to ever come back 😢
I have had a similar thought about if he just chose by random but to be fair they said he picked these 4 out of thousands so the odds are not in favor of it just being by chance. Also the way they determined Aang is the Avatar is similar to how the real world Dalai Lama of the Tibetan Buddhists (who they believe also reincarnates) is determined. Also the current Dalai Lama's last name is Gyatso.
would have been an unfair advantage with aang in any airbending game even before he was revealed as the avatar. he was the only air bending master among the children.
The moment Zuko had to duel his father there was only 3 possible outcomes and no way for him to win. The first and most likely was that Ozai trounced him utterly, leaving him humiliated and shamed...a shame he would never recover from, meaning he could never be Fire Lord. When Ozai eventually died, the throne would pass to his sister Azula. A monster not capable of empathy that would burn the world to the ground. The second possibility would be if he performed well against Ozai, managing to push him back or even injure him. That would be interpreted one of two ways. The first is that Ozai went easy on him because he was his son, implying he didn't think he could hold his own. Or if the people didn't believe that, then his image as their invincible Fire Lord would be shattered, since he were hard pressed by a 13 year old. The people's faith in him would waver, and the nation would become unstable. The third possibility is that he somehow won. The only politically sound result of that would be Ozai immediately passing the crown, as Zuko would have triumphed over Ozai. And the nation would collapse under a child ruler. From the moment Ozai became Zuko's opponent in the Agni Kai, there was no way he could fight without bringing disaster - whether eventual or immediate - to the Nation and the people he has been raised and taught to put first in his thoughts. So he did the only thing he could...nothing.
Aang has tattoos because he's a master air bender. His invention of the air ball-scooter for travelling was a brand new technique. The old woman walked up a path on the right side. You can see the path in the very first shot of the cave. Zuko is a honorable and loyal person in a land of people that would stab their mother in the back if it benefitted them. He was dismissed on a quest that had to seeming end. The Avatar disappeared for a hundred years. So, he was sent to chase nothing and no one. Aang was told he was the Avatar at age 12. They usually don't tell the person until age 16 because it's just too much for a 12 yo to handle. It places the weight of the entire world on your shoulders.

Did you know that Air and Fire are technically the same element? Air is more the cold type while Fire is more hotter Air. Aang and Zuko like opposite to each others. One is still a kid who just want to be a kid and Zuko is a teenager who got responsibility to do and he can only get home if he has the avatar so its a stress life I tell ya. Also do you know how terrifying it is to work on a ship at the sea? Zuko is lucky he didnt lose his crew, boat or Uncle coz he really need them.
Air and fire might be a little more in common since you need air for fire and air benders can control temperature too, but that's where the similarities end. Not the same element. If you wanna get all scientific, my theory is on an atomic level, Firebenders energy excites electrons and with refined control they can create and bend fire and heat to their will. Would also explain the lightning.
