- We take a trip to Thorp, Wisconsin where we pick up a John Deere 8300 Grain Drill, but something caught my eye as we were pulling in!
I would love a 4960 but I have to focus on getting Big Red running first!
How Farms Work by Ryan Kuster is a UA-cam channel based in rural Potosi, Wisconsin.
Our mission is to teach those who didn't grow up on a farm what the farming life is like.
These videos show the Kuster family working together raising cattle and crops. We believe everyone who wants to know more about farming should be able to share the farming experience with us and we look to educate the world on many essential agriculture topics.
How Farms Work takes place on ~1,100 acres with around 75-200 cattle at any given time. Four John Deere tractors are currently used on the farm, which are a 4020, 4640, 7600, and 8235R.
Be sure to subscribe for new videos every Wednesday, Friday, and Sunday at 11AM Central!

You forgot to turn the key off...
Nope, went back and grabbed my camera in it and turned it off
@@HowFarmsWork Good :)
Did you watch the video?
Yep, I wondered about the key as well. Gotta appreciate their clean 4960.
I See that to 😂😂😂😂😂😂
Just came across this. I worked for a farmer who re-powered when new generations came out. He had two 4850s and two 4960s. The 4960s were plastic pieces of junk and I couldn't keep the ACs running, in Florida. The 4850s were a dream to drive. Nothing was beeping or falling off in your lap. I bought my own big crows foot wrench because the hydraulic line under the front axle kept leaking on one. I had owned two 4250s when I had owned a farm previously. Loved them. My brother still has our 1971 3020.
ROAD TRIP! Thorp isn't too far away from where my mom's side of the family originated. My grandparents met and married in Boyd, and there are some shoestring relatives still living there today. Apparently, one of my great uncles operated a creamery there when my mom was growing up. A few friends of mine actually had a family farm very close by there. Thanks for the ride-along and window shopping! That yellow semi tractor was nice.
what an enjoyable time spent with four powerful happy young men enjoying the farming life, thanks so much for making it
I have always loved the way they sound, look, and operate. They truly are a great tractor for 200+ hp
you should be a farm equipment salesman. Even though i have all the equipment i need that 4960 sure brings out the urge to own.
That 4960 is a sweet tractor. Im taking a liking to the SG cab.
And a good time had by all. Look and see what a 4455 sold for on Machinery Pete’s site recently . Old iron brought big money.thx for the ride
The 4960 and 6030 are my all time favorite John Deere tractors.
Very nice 4960! Well taken care of. Nice looking White next to it also.
Always fun to go on road trips with a few buddies this time of year. Get away from home and see new stuff with good company. Glad the unloading process went really smoothly. At first I wasn't convinced that was going to work but it did. Good video Ryan!
Good video in spite of negative arguments after the fact! Lol I'm retired mailman and really enjoy your posts ! Thank you.
I drove both the 4960 and an MX255 around the lot up there about 3 months ago, the Deere is a very nice and clean machine!!
Nice to see some "farm kids" on a road trip to get new equipment.
We have a 4955 mfwd and love it, i think its the best tractor on the farm imo
Another iconic John Deere history
Almost to 200,000 subs. Looks like a nice tractor and congrats on all you success
I love the cab design 4960 its just unique
Love the 4960. Looks like it teamed up with an interior kit recently. Sweet!
We just bought a 4960 last year and I love it
4960 is a solid tractor ryan! We had a quad range 4760 for 15 years, and man it was a good one! The 4560 and 4760 were both sold with quad range option on the 2wd, but not the 4wd, and 4960s are all powershift. There's your trivia for the day!
How many hours did you have on 4760.
Jess Roberts we put 3000 hours on it. It was used for disking and pulling wagons. Since then, only 200 hours have been put on it. Gets used for spraying now.
What’s the difference between quad range and power shift transmission. I know nothing about tractors, I’ve always been interested in them but just recently want to know more about them and learn something new
To be very simple, quad range has two shifters and powershift has one. In quad, you have A B C and D on one shifter, then 1 2 3 4 and r1 and r2. On powershift, all the gears are just all in the same column, and you shift through each one
4960's are very nice, I have one that is in very nice condition!
Lucky, I wish I had one them
Glad to see you got some down time
We ran a 4960 for years on our farm as our tillage tractor and I loved the thing. Sold it when we upgraded to a newer tractor so we could handle other jobs on the farm then just tillage to the neighboring county. Only major issue we had was the engine blew on it but it was due to the fact that one of the engine air filters wasn’t screwed in all the way when it was replaced but it had 1100 on the overhaul and don’t remember before the engine blew
That's a mighty fine lookin' 4690. 4850 MFWD is more my jam, and made during my birth year.
Listen, I have lived in the area you traveled here(NE WI) my entire 40 years of life, grew up on a dairy farm(Dad got out of farming in the late 90's) and you need to know this- Swiderski implement is a very large operation, that offers a very large variety of equipment and tractors in both age and make. If you take time to look at their inventory over time, you will find they offer an unusual amount of "overhauled" tractors. Some seem to hae less hours then one would think for an overhaul, some many more.
Growing up we used to get the trading post farmer's newspaper, and Swiderski had a full page ad. They had all kinds of tractors, lots of Olivers, some Molines, MF- remember this is the 80's and in this area the dealerships for those brands were very, very scarce. So Swiderski was one of few to service them. Thing is, they would have say, an Oliver 1850 let's say. "Recent overhaul". Then you would see the hour meter had litterally rolled over. Same with countless IH tractors, machines with 9000+ hours on them with "recent overhaul". Then you would hear stories of people that bought one of these overhauled tractors, put 500 hours on them and rear ends blew out, PTO quit working, or if you were lucky, the supposedly overhauled engine would go and you could go to bat about defective work etc. Remember now, tractors in the 60's weren't built to run 12000 hours before a major overhaul. Most made it to 5000, maybe 7000 and then you OH'd it as a precaution so you didn't throw a rod through the block.
Could you find a good unit? Sure. Was it parked right next to a unit that had been overhauled twice and had 11000 hours on it and shiny new paint? Sure. Was that parked next to a tractor that had been under water in some flood down south(or right up in this neck of the woods in the 90's) and dredged out and cleaned up? Sure.
So when you see that nice looking, super clean JD there you like, just remember, it could have been sitting under 20 feet of water at some point, it may have had a half-arsed OH done so it didn't smoke anymore, you might get it home, run it one season and go to use it in the spring and find out the powershift for the first 3 gears is failing suddenly, etc. or you might take it home and get a really good deal.
THAT is Swiderski, it's a gamble you have to decide if you want to take, if the price is right. you know what they say, "if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is" There is a reason they want 20 grand more for the other tractor with tons more hours on it- that one was bought at an auction and not dredged out of the river in Texas.
Just don't get ripped off. look for mud where mud shouldn't be. look for water lines on the sides(if it was in say, 4 feet of water you might see a trace of where the water height was on the tractor) look for shiny new paint, it was put there to hide somthing not make it extra nice.
Just don't get ripped off.
I grew up on a farm in central wisconsin in the 80's and 90's and you have just described the general consensus of "wheelin dealin" Al Swiderski to a "t" !
those 7000 series john deere's are my favorite, we have a 7930 and that is my favorite machine to drive
I worked on a farm growing up that had a 7600, really nice tractor
And a 4440 4640 4440 4240 4020
This is really funny seeing as I looked at that same tractor last spring
Thanks for sharing Ryan..
I adore the 4960’s. Buy it buy it.
Guy in the grey shirt in the backseat is just loads of fun I bet. Looks like a serial killer. LMBO. NAAA, Sure he's a great guy. Thanks for the awesome videos and keepem coming. Happy Holidays from Arkansas
Great video. I've a picture in my head of a 4960 filling up big red some harvest in the near future
Love the 6175 agco white in the video
That key looks like the standard JD key for everything in the day. It fit the 2750 that I mowed pine tree rows with as well as the 450C crawler that we did cleanup work with. I also have one in my pocket right now. :) :)
That boxcar magnum would be a nice tractor. They run very good!
4960'
Old school beauty!
Nice looking tractor I pulled up in Thorp this Summer.
I know this is a few months old. If you come across this, please answer. I am wondering, does one buy a tractor for like, or for actual necessity? You don't seam whimsical on what you do at all. For my own reasons only. I am not questioning what you do. I have just joined yours, and Werner Farms channels. Very informative and great fun to watch your daily activities. We are buying a new utility for our small 10 acre retirement ranch. We searched hard for a couple months, for value and quality. Finally settled on an LS.
I like your channel a lot, you make the Best farm videos on UA-cam!
My Dad and I own two 4440's a 4630 a 4850 and a 4960 all power shifts. My Dad and Grandfather were both certified John Deere mechanics. My Grandfather said when Deere came out with the power shift they called it idiot proof and on the first demo tractor they had warn the tred off the back tires shifting it on asphalt agressively with no transmission problems. Quads to shift from A,B,C range you have to stop or after a while you will have to rebuild your clutch packs which calls for you to split the tractor twice to build. I'm 32 my Dad's 57 and my grandfather is 88 and we have worked on maybe a hand full of power shifts but we have worked on dozens of quads oh and power shifts are cheaper to work on also only have to split once. Most big complaints about power shifts is the jaring shifting gears but when they changed from the 8 to a 15 speed with the 50 series it's a lot smoother.
Love any john deere and have been using them on my granddad's farm for ever
Only one john deere that I will try and buy is a 4450 because my grandad had one but it got too worn out to run and repairing it would cost an arm and a leg so we had to sell it
Nice vid never stop farming
4960 is my favorite tractor
I was watching one of big tractor power videos an his boy was wearing one of yalls shirts. I thought that was pretty cool.
We've been to Thorpe. Great people.
I'm with you on the 60 series. I liked them. Somebody just put a 4760 up for sale up the highway from me. Brought back memories from my late teens. Farm I worked on traded 4430 for 4760. And yes they did come with quad range. This 4760 was first tractor with quad range transmission. I hated it. It was so hard to shift. Then a few years later I climbed up in a 7800 with quad range and it shifted pretty easy. So maybe it was something wrong with it in 4760. Other than that I really liked the 4760.
I like the 60 series but its not my favorite my to favorite series of tractors are the 40 series and the 55 series got a nice 4640 quad range and a nice 4955 powershift on our farm
Deere fan here. That 9330 will run forever though
thats cool the 4960 has that table platform on it. but look at all those sexy iron tractors.
Too bad that that 4960 couldn't have ridden home with you on your trailer while you were there. She was a beauty. :)
I have to wonder why that's your dream tractor... I'm lusting after one of those blacked-out Deutz Fahr Warrior series rigs right now, myself.
I love those old planters
Great video Ryan. I live on a farm by Reward Saskatchewan Canada. I farm with my 2 brothers. Me and my 2 brothers use to have 60 to 70 cows but not anymore. Me and my 2 brothers are just grain farmers now.
I"ve seen one here in Florida went for 25K. It's a great Tractor. I owned one myself back in the day.
There is a 4960 up in Mora MN with 700-900 hours on it. Older gentleman bought it new and barely used it. Probably not for sale but give it a few more years and im sure it will be.
That would be a gem
always loved the 60 series put over a thousand hours on a 4760 before i moved
realy nice grain drill I have to say my uncle who is a contractor has a 4900 I think they always refer to it as the beast so.
Nice job
Thanks like the video Ryan love the 4960 too .
Like those 7820’s what we use to bale peanut hay and run the field cultivater
4960s are my favorite also
That 9330 looks good 👌
Up in my neck of the woods, just down 29 a ways. Go about another block down the road and there is a great place to get spices for making sausage. :)
Nice 4960
I love 4960s like the design
4960's are also one of my dream tractors.....
1. 4040
2. 4960
3. TIE 4020 and 4430
4. 8440
Dont get me started on combines!
The Thorpedo has great food!
Nice tractor looks from the thumbnail pretty good
"Its not the greatest, but they'd work for a while" THAT right there captures the can-do attitude in the Ag community!
I lived on a free stall operation when I was in my early teens and they had JDs.The biggest was a 5020 with big flotation tires on the front ,it was one of the biggest tractors in the area. Years later I became a heavy equipment operator and ran big equipment but will always remember how sitting in that seat it look like a big whale in front of you the way the hood was.
Love the body style Ryan we have a 4640 with the exhaust the same way
that is a really good looking tractor
Had to find this video because we farm just south of town
I am from up in that area of WI, so funny you said cataract mart! Such a small town but I drive it from where I live now, to where I grew up! If you like meat they have it! Beef sticks, brats ect! lol
You do great work Ryan. Thanks for such a great channel :)
we have a 4760 power shift love it
Like that 9330 beside it
That 8330 next to it would be a nice upgrade for you
Hey Ryan thats a good price for that 4960 i wish it was closer to where i lived i have always wanted one of those 2
Love it my baby bro loves tractors that's for sharreing
We got a John Deere 4960 with 4000 and some thing hours on it
They have some pretty nice ih tractors there too
😍 I love the 4960! My dream tractor too!
That is a good looking 4960! The only thing that looks kinda odd is the extremely curvy exhaust pipe. It must work fine because I have seen 60 series tractors running a lot and they look fine but normally you try to keep the pipe as straight as possible.
This is interesting we are from northern Michigan and do a lot or pretty much all of our dealing with swiderskis from Merrill. Same owners. And another thing you were with in about 5 miles from one of my cousins who is a fair size dairy farmer there.
Nice road trip!! Eric is driving because, why are you driving? Lol 😂
I’ve got a 4560 mfd and it’s a power shift been awesome and no problems hrs are 6800 .
Glad to see im not the only one
Я живу в России и люблю ваш канал! спасибо, что ты есть. и удачи вашей не светлое дело.
I drove a 4960 for years back in the 90's. Brand new, the thing burned some serious oil and it had a horrible bounce at road speeds that JD couldn't fix. I miss it.
Wow.....nice snow.......VERY HOT HERE in Brisbane Australia
Nice tractor
I used to run a 4450 with powershift and I never had to start in 1st gear? I loved the powershift.
@Fendt BlackBeauty why you so triggered bro not everyone who has worked on a farm can remember everything
@Fendt BlackBeauty who said I was an adult and do you really have to talk shit about someone just because they could have forgot something or are just lying
True
We use three 4450s all with PowerShift, I can't complain at all, love that transmission
Devlin Rupe yep we have a 4455 and it’s awesome with the power shift I also the quad we have in the 4440 we have and the 4240
good video
I love your videos
Welcome to the cold snowy north.Gee,you missed stopping at the cheese factory just on the edge of town. They make Gouda cheese. You also can look in the dairy that is right there.Swiderski is a big machinery dealer in this part of Wi.Lots of stores with lots of inventory.Too bad you missed the cheese factory. The Gouda is good.
Seems like everything gets a little cheaper the further north you head in the great state of WI. Tractors and implements included.
18:22 what a view!
I'd rather have the boxcar 7250 next to it haha, but definitely a clean 4960
Have you ever been to the farm machinery show in Georgetown Ohio? It outdoor. And if not you should try to go. I think it's a little better than Louisville. It has live demo's also.
