Thank you for posting an excellent blog Tara! As you were listing your points I made notations next to my working outline. I spent yesterday reviewing OATD for recent Ph.D. for updated sources. Reading these helps me either to raise the bar to push beyond other's work or to exam pitfall to avoid.

Thank you so much Elizabeth for your inspirational post. I think that remains the excitement of research... That sense that we are working beyond where knowledge exists. It is such an amazing moment when that happens. Most PhDs are good, solid scholarship. And that is important - and that will pass as long as originality is confirmed. But if students feel the inspiration of a book at the end - and they visualize that and it is meaningful for them - it means the research can be transcendent ... And that is remarkable. Biggest hug to you txxx

You are a gem Tara and such a blessing to live in the computer age! I am back at this blog to watch it again. I do that often with your blogs. I have resisted my chairperson's suggestion to blend the literature with my contribution, and instead, I was following the traditional dissertation format but no more. You have a strong argument that will save me work being my book published. Thanks for the inspiration and any of your blogs are a good prime when I sit down to work!

Thanks very much for this important vlog! It is very timely for me as well because I'm working on rendering my PhD into a monograph. I have one question, though. What about they theoretical framework chapter? How should it be presented in a book? My literature review is integrated in my case-study chapters but I have a separate theoretical framework chapter. Your advice on this is much appreciated.

Hi Balsam - so lovely to hear from you. Yes - great point. The separate theoretical framework chapter can also be challenging. Can I make a suggestion? And we can talk about this as much as you like :) Think about the theory chapter not as the 'framework' chapter - but as the 'why I should care' chapter. So have a good look at the first two pages of this chapter. Think about how it sets the scene - sets the 'why I should care' - component of the book. You know my argument is that everything is theory ;) If it is not theory then it is empiricism - which is also a theory (!!!!). So reframe this as the 'meta' chapter. Here is why this work matters. Work on the first couple of pages of the chapter - should be ready to go :) Txxx

Hi from ANU, Tara! Thanks for another great vlog. I've missed several but have been catching up on the odd one here and there that I think may be particularly relevant to me. I have a question about book vs articles. Am I ruling one out by focusing on the other? I would love to work my PhD thesis into a book after I graduate (anthropology). It would mean so much to me being able to show a published book to the community where I gathered my data. On the other hand, I feel the pressure of needing to get publications under my belt before applying for jobs down the track, and most of my planned thesis chapters could be edited relatively painlessly into self-contained articles. If every chapter of a potential book is already out there as a bunch of journal articles, will anybody want to publish that book?

Dear Tara, thank you for such an insightful vlog, the first time I have ever seen one. I love your clarity and focus. I was fumbling myself with this query, and sadly for me I do not match up to all the criteria that you mention (especially the second point, which I will not repeat here). My work is significant, not because my ego says so, but I know the social value of the potential contribution. I am just wondering whether one would write a book simultaneously along with writing the thesis, or would it be a straightforward submission of the dissertation itself. In my university we are not allowed to straightaway publish the Phd for instance- possibly it amounts to plagiarism. So how does one deal with that?

Just wondering how many books had been written by the “books don’t matter” person??
