    I purchased and imported a VR-4 into Australia in 2006 (purchased before compliance was available in Australia, that cleared when it was on the ship). I paid 355,000 Yen at auction with no idea what I was buying (a mate in the scene convinced me to do it). Still to this day it was the best car I have ever owned!

      How was the reliability?

    • @kleenbeats
      @kleenbeats Місяць тому +1

      @@fallingwatersnz It was extremely reliable, but it was low Kms when I got it (under 100k) and I serviced it at regular intervals with with mechanics who understood JDM cars (big factor). For major service’s I researched and sourced parts direct from contacts in Japan and New Zealand. Wish I still had it!

    Bought my Evo 6 brand new in 1999 here in the UK. Still have it, and it changed my life both automotively and philosophicaly. I immediately joined the most prolific Evo club at the time, the MLR, and became heavily involved in the scene. Meets were frequent and heavily attended. What was brilliant about that time was ALL, the performance Mitsubishis were present at the meets, so I remember the Legnums, Gallant VR4s, 3000s, FTOs, Pajero Evos (one of my favourites) and of course, the now Ultra rare, Lancer 2000 Turbo, the car that started it all. Have driven most of them, been in all of them and now, looking back, it's apparent that is was a special and glorious time, never to be equalled or repeated. I'll never part with my Evo, it's actually difficult to grasp that it's 25 years old this year! It's not radically modified, I've deliberately limited tuning to 500 bhp at the wheels, any more and it starts to get expensive with tranny upgrades. It has suspension and brake upgrades, strut braces, aero undertrays and a myriad of minor improvements. The most recent mod is a cooler worx short precision shifter, short of a sequential box that is the most effective mod for the trans, superb quality, looks works and feels fantastic. So yes, the 90s was Mitsubishis golden era with such a proliferation of performance cars, and I feel so lucky to have been around and active in that scene. Shame it's all gone so wrong for the diamond star.

    I'm a VR-4 man, Ive owned a Evo 0 monte carlo (VR-4) and a ZR-4 in New Zealand. LOVED the 4G63T boosting all over town, tracks and drag strips . I have to admit that when my friends dad bought a Galant VR-4 with the V6 twin turbo motor, I laughed (big 4G63 FAN boy here lol. BUT OMG his dad took it down to the melling lights (wellington) on Thursday night.... with his boost up and was cleaning up with the tiptronic gearbox.
    When I went for a ride in it OMG it was so smooth with that v6 and torquey especially compared to my then ZR-4

    The reason they're a bit thin on the ground these days is 1: They got ran on 91 and run hard, which melted the engine and 2: they got ran hard and into a tree because they wouldn't pull up on the stock brakes

    When I first saw that auto dash cluster I was thinking "probably not the best car to be reviewing", but I saw a manual conversion there and breathed a sigh of relief. The autos aren't much cop in these, although there are a couple of DSM guys in the states that have built them for drag racing, although there's not much left that's OEM Mitsi inside.
    My mrs has one and I've done a little bit of work to it myself, mainly cosmetics and a full panel and paint job on it. Similar sort of setup, instead its using TD04s out of a Subaru Forester on custom manifolds. We got lucky that a crowd in Hampton Downs got hold of a set of jigs to make VR4 manifolds. The power curve sounds pretty similar to the TME turbos, which are a stock TD03 housing machined out to take a TD04 wheel. We thought about going this road but at that stage the TME turbos were very fresh on the market. Plus the Subaru flange opens up a few upgrade options if ever we wanted to go that way. We tuned to 260kw to the tyres, it made 280kw with a badly heat soaking intercooler. I know there's 300kw in it but at that stage you're knocking on the limits of the stock rods. Sadly it hasn't run in a couple of years and it might not run for a while longer yet as we can't get Gull 98 up here anymore.
    The brakes on these are, well, appalling, we even went FTO twin pot front brakes and its still not enough to haul these things up. I'm used to cars with monster big brakes on them (had my share of Lexus V8s and european Fords and Audis) so flying into the first corner of the Hampton Downs club circuit with the brakes doing not much was a bit disconcerting.
    Also, yes, they all rattle the lifters, even on rebuilt engines with quality aftermarket lifters (like the one in the Mrs' VR4), they'll still chatter a lifter or two. A bottle of Pro-Ma MBL8 does shut them up for a while, but at $70 a bottle per oil change, it gets pricey

    ive owned 2 galant vr4 and 1 legnum vr4 they are such great cars, if you want family, comfort and fast this is the way! bit of a dog to work on but there worst cars around still! and the AYC diff is something else makes it drive so well for the size/weight, i remember taking same corners to test all my cars and see what speed, the galant consistantly went 20kph fast than my gc8 wrx (both had decent coilovers) , i actgually had to reteach my brain because it feels like it shouldnt be possible, but it really works, if youve never seen the 3 AYC bars light up youve never fully used it whacky feeling at first because it start pulling you round the corner, but allows so much grip at high speed turns as it splits toqrue to outside wheel once you use it and trust it, best AWD system imo by far, id say they absolutely need good coilovers to feel responsive, as they came as a touring sport car rather than gtr full sport suspension.
    I also had a mirage very recently with a 6a12mivec v6 from the fto gpx, also a very very underatted motor would beat out a type r civic ek4 all day in the mirage (only weighed 900kg)

    They have a great mix of aggression and style.
    They remind me a bit of my Vrx Magna and Ralliart Magna here in Australia. (Diamante in NZ)
    The Vrx has a 3.8 from the 380, it’s been cammed and turned to 195kw 476nm torque at the wheels, LSD manual too.

      Eh, seeing how these are used in nipponland I'm betting you had a bit to do with it blowing... But yeah, these and some other JP rocketships are cool, lots of things there I've never seen elsewhere, good and bad. I'll never forget that weird egg inspired car-cum-nokiaphone thing they had tons of 10yrs ago. I can't think of the name of it, it doesn't quite come close to anything else...

    • @LamontGilkey
      @LamontGilkey 11 місяців тому

      It passed inspection. And had no issues at the time. Previous owner admitted it needed head gaskets and was getting to that age when he was contacted afterwards (hence $200). It could have been saved for sure had I known.
      A few years later I got a SG9 6 Speed... it got rear-ended and totaled 4 years after owning it.
      I think I am not meant to own fast beastly wagons.
      As for the odd car, Cappuccino?

    • @noth606
      @noth606 11 місяців тому

      @@LamontGilkey No, not the Cappuccino although that's an odd one too, but the Cappuccino still looks like a real car, just smaller. The thing I'm thinking of doesn't look like a real car, it looks like an egg timer, and a nokia 3110 phone had a lovechild with 4 wheels, I can't explain it better. They said it's not even a Keicar, it's taxed etc as a full size car. It is small, but a bit wider than keicars, and very 'rounded' in design. It wasn't that common, but I did see like 5-6 of them in about a month, all light muted pastel colors with a silver midline stripe if I remember correctly. If you'd take a nokia 3110 and a Mini, and morph 50% between them, you'd have it pretty much...

      About what year do you think it is? I am way curious now. Honda Beat?

    • @noth606
      @noth606 11 місяців тому

      @@LamontGilkey No, the Honda beat looks more like a car, the thing I'm on about is far more rounded and appliance like, sort of like a rice cooker design language, but in a car. I've been trying to remember what brand it even was and I can't. The weirdest thing with it was that from a distance it didn't look that odd, but the closer you got the more weird it got. I saw it around 2013-2014 or so and it for sure wasn't brand new then, my guess would be that it's maybe 2008-2010ish give or take a couple of years. Hard to estimate because of how it's designed, it's different enough not to fit an era in terms of design.
      I'll try to search for it and comment back if I find it, but in terms of look it looks low, short and sort of wide, it's the width that makes it not a keicar according to my ex-father-in-law.

They trash talk anyone who builds their own car and hasn't taken their car to a "reputable shop" any question u have is answered with "take it to reputable workshop" like a paid sponsor ad or a cheerleading squad. The main issue with these cars is because there is no aftermarket support and 90% of community don't work on their own cars they have an opinion on everything. my mate and i have heavily modified single turbo converted legnums here in Australia. we both aren't active in the community because they drive us crazy

    I´m from Austria, not Australia. I have an EVO 6 RS2, an EVO 9 Wagon Manual and a Legnum VR4 Manual AYC as a Wintercar and i simply love the VR4. Yes, it´s not an EVO in terms of steering and suspension, but it´s the perfect snowdrift machine. I also updated the reardiff to SAYC from the EVO 9 and did some toe in in the front and toe out in the rear, so it´s turning in quite nicely. The engine has not that much topend power, but it´s much more responsive than the 4g63 in an EVO. I don´t know what has been done to the turbos in this car and why the Legy is lagy, cause with stock turbos it´s absolutely not. Wonder why the owner didn´t change the steering wheel to the smaller EVO 6 version, as it´s p&p. This car is so much fun to drive, if you know how to set it up, it has so much space and i still love the stands of this 28 year old Wagon.

    This is in the same category as Subaru Legacy B4 twin turbos. A sick car in theory, but always owned by someone who can't quite afford to take care of them. In snowy Western Canada, a lot of both of them get imported and passed around. In the right hands, they can be fantastic snow cars, but they almost never end up in the right hands.

    - Funfact : Let me tell you the truth, the shape of the Galant VR-4 is based on BMW because Mitsubishi likes BMW so much that they want to have their own BMW. That's why it's so BMW-like inside and out.

    Had a galant vr4 for 10 years. One of AMS early customers. My 1.6 turbo Kia Forte GT blows it totally out of the water! I can be in 6th gear at 35 and tip in and beat you in third! Go see for yourself. Fell in love with the 1.6 in 04. My aveo was so badass I ditched the Evo!

  • @Aspire13

    as someone who owns a galant irl, just wanted to mention that ever since the 6th generation galant lost its rally participation to evos, I think mitsubishi didnt want the galant series to die just yet since it was a recognizable series
    so in the mid 90s basically mitsu didn't have cars dedicated on the "LUXURY SEDAN MARKET" as advertised in asian market (dunno if western market is the same) but they had the galant compete with other brands with the almost same dimensions and engines which usually is a V6 (ex. HONDA ACCORD, NISSAN CEFIRO, TOYOTA CAMRY)
    After the 6th Generation Galant, all the following generations 7th 8th 9th gen were luxury sedans and had a Wagon version namely the "Sports GT Wagon" for 7G and "Legnum" for 8G
    As for 9G, Well we dont talk about the 9G hahaha

    If you have had a lot of R33 GTR experience. Id love to see your review of a Nissan Stagea 260rs. I think they have fantastic steering and handling plus the RB26.
    The RS Four S is the Rb25 version in manual. I found the 26 cars drive very differently to the Rb25 cars. Curious how they came to the Legnum. I comsidered buying 1 but wanted an Rb engine for the aftermarket support.
    I do like the styling of the Legnum.

    Nearly anyone who speaks fast Mitsubishi AWD will mention Lancer EVO before the Galant/Legnum VR-4 because the EVO was much more popular. The 4G63 also had a lot more aftermarket support and it stayed in the Lancer until 2010, far past the Galant when it was replaced with the V6 in the 1992 model year. I do have a love for JDM Wagons, but not the complexity of Mitsubishi's 6A/6G engines.

    Those years, the bonnet and head lights, lamp cluster, look good. The engines are rough and unrefined. The magna of Australian ?design-manufacture? is a smoother ride. There are cars like e-class estate and mark-x zio and saab with pretty good looks. Petrol engines are, sounding smooth but if you take out the sound, or tune for sound, a diesel may be a much better-flexible option for quiet-people. Wagon-estate are for car people refusing to admit a van is a smarter choice. Short changed height.

    Manual purists complaining in the comments xD Jokes aside, Legnums are nice, a friend of mine has a Legnum VR4 (automatic of course and he isn't going to swap it to manual) and it is a comfortable-ish car to sit in and be a passenger in, probably because the leather seats are quite comfortable (Compared to my Evo V's recaros lol). I would probably have one as well but I'm sticking to my Evo for now :P
    Also the other thing I noticed in my friend's Legnum VR4 is that the turning radius is a lot better than in Evo, despite both being AWD.
