I think the only reason that peeps keep comparing them to Rage is due to the subject matter that they make songs about. Both bands are very anti-establishment. However, they should not be compared musically. I love both but for completely different reasons.
Respect your take, gave you a thumbs up, but wanted to say that the way I'd classify their perspective is less "anti-establishment" and more "calling out the attrocities of our systems." Like with "Killing in the name", I don't specifically see it as anti-establishment (though I wouldn't disagree with that description, either), I primarily see it as calling out white supremacy and violence by the police and our trusting them so much that we believe in their righteousness ("those who died are justified"), giving them license to instigate and escalate situations where its utterly unnecessary and entirely due to bias (eg police killings should often be charged as hate crimes). And when I think about System of a Down generally (not necessarily Chop Suey specifically), I think they're drawing attention to the atrocities of the Armenien genocide, a pretty horrific, but largely ignored event (there's some good documentaries about it here on UA-cam). So I don't particularly see either band as like "hooray for anarchy", but more like "this is what those who govern us are doing to us". That's just my take, though 🍻 (not trying to start an argument, just felt like an important distinction, like how Ice-T can have a song, "Cop Killer," and then play a cop on TV, b/c his perspective is more nuanced than it initially seems)
I would add the besides both bands having political messages, they also both came out with a unique sound for their time. Maybe more so SOAD, but Rage was the first rock band with a legit rapper to make it mainstream, while also having a very distinct funk roots driving their rock sound.
One reason I don't like a lot of reaction videos is I feel like people lie for views - and I REALLY appreciate when you keep it real and say how you feel. Also, when you found out you heard part of it already - you admitted it instead of acting like this is a first. Loved this whole thing.

SOAD is an all Armenian Band that brings some of their armenian folk roots into metal. They worked with Rick Ruben for this song, and were experiencing some writers block. Rick had Serj the lead singer pull a random book from his Library and flip to a random page and pick a line to try as lyrics. The lyrics he found in the book were the "Father into your hands, I command my spirit". SOAD is my favorite band by far, but the first time ive heard them i had the same thoughts. BET that you do listen again. Prison song, Toxicity, Sugar would be ones I highly recommend. Honesty got my sub tho, lets go.
While I disagree, I can totally see were he is coming from. Not a bad take. Especially coming from Rage. I think a better song from SOAD would be "Sugar", "BYOB", or "Prison Song". But hey to each their own. It's awesome seeing you cover this stuff.
@@HollywoodRobTV yeah I definitely think BYOB and Prison Song better reflect their more politically charged songs. Chop Suey was their mainstream hit, but (as almost always happens), its not their best song

Many times songs stick with us because we hear them at a particular time and place in our life. When you force it and expect something it can sometimes feel disappointing.
There's a lot of musical genius in this song. In some ways they're showboating their abilities, which can work against a band if it's too much in one sitting. I like that you're honest about what you like and what you don't like and aren't afraid to say it. So many music reaction channels just go overboard with the praise like every single song is the greatest thing they've ever heard, pampering to the audience for subs, so the honesty here is refreshing. Keep doing what you're doing, it's great!
First video I saw was Rage and like a stone, had some real doubts you were giving legit opinions, but after the killers and this one, fears were snuffed out. Great entertaining series man
Chop Suey! is from their Toxicity album and honestly it's probably their most mainstream album and it always felt like it was kind of toned down as a result. Just listen to some stuff from their self-titled album first and see if there's something you like (and then try their other stuff).
I really appreciate hearing the honest take. There is something to be said about over hyping a song for someone and comparing this to RAGE would lend one to dismiss what SOAD is saying in their songs. A ton of their music speaks about the Armenian Genocide while getting very political about current affairs (of the time). Random song suggestion if you are looking for something fun... Within Temptation- And we run (Feat: Xzibit)
Just want to say I'm loving the series. It's so great to find people that love something you've loved for so long the first time they hear it. I was wondering though, have you ever thought about doing a series about music that you have loved for a long time that others might not know? Kind of a, "If you love Rage, Audioslave, and SOAD, you need to hear this," sort of thing? I would watch the shit out of that. I love sharing music.
You gave it an honest try and I appreciate that you were really listening to it. Can't ask for more than that. I'm following cause I dig that you're giving what seems like your honest reaction. Keep 'em coming! I hope you do Toxicity.
i think this is why i can't associate Rage with other screamo/metal songs, their fusion of rock and rap is usually something that doesn't always translate well (im sure he'll get to Limp Bizkit very soon at this rate) and is usually a miss, i truly think they got lightning in a bottle because i have yet to hear anything like them, even Prophets of Rage with Chuck D couldn't really capture the same magic as the original group, they're forever just themselves, which elevates them every time i hear them. hope to see more bro
@@shmick6079 Yeah I was about to say the same. Calling Rage a screaming emo band is just straight up offensive. Oak, stick with your Fall Out Boy and Job for a Cowboy. Leave our real metal out of it.

@@oak3785 I listen to more rap than metal, but I love them both about equally. I can't stand screamo music, though. Screamo is more high pitch screaming, and it sounds terrible. Metal is more like low pitch growling, and actually sounds like singing instead of just screaming like a woman at the top of your lungs while your listeners slit their wrists and hide it with long sleeves with fingerholes cut out so the sleeves don't roll up. If you've ever seen an emo that always has long sleeves with their thumb through the wrist cuff, now you know why lol. Those are screamo fans.
I appreciate the honesty! A lot of reactions are only positive while I do not like many songs I hear a first time lol so it's nice to get the up and down views, it's real.
I've always loved the way the intro comes in with adding one instrument at a time then goes hard. Although I can see your view that it sounds "memorable."
i laughed so hard when you paused it a half second before the end and point-blank with full resolve said "im neva gonna listen to that song again" i died. love the honesty bro, hahah!
Just found your channel these videos are really good it's ok to dislike something as long as you explain yourself and sometimes it's not that deep and you just don't like it I appreciate your honesty 😂
It's one of my favorite songs, but I gave you a like anyway for your honesty. We don't all like the same stuff! I would recommend listening to it a couple of times more, as well. It is one of those songs that you like more as you understand the ebb and flow of the different parts.
The reason the song is so powerful is it’s meaning. We treat people’s deaths differently if they die by suicide or an OD vs natural causes. Their manager said they couldn’t call the song “Suicide” so they went with Chop Suey as in the word suicide chopped in half.
I think SOAD has such a unique sound, that even if your into rock/metal, it takes you by surprise and might take a listen or two to get your mind ready to jump in. Music with a message always hits different once you know the message.
I love this song and it's probably in my top 20 favorites, but i respect how honest you are. it's hard to believe reactors who have done a hundred songs and conveniently love all of them. not all of them are going to connect with everybody, and that's totally fine.
Dude, I totally love your HONESTY with saying you don't like it. Music is like food, we all experience a given flavor differently, it either hits us right or it doesn't. Thumbs up. My MOM hates this song too but obviously I love her to death, why would I ever give YOU hatred for not vibing with a given song? I wouldn't. Exactly why I give you thumbs up for your honesty. Keep up the honest music reviews bro :).
try not to compare the two, they are different but carry some similarities in that their music is used as a means to spread a message. Serj (SOAD) is an activist and a very smart man, look into him. Also the video for this song is pretty epic - you're missing out, which may have helped connect some of the dots on the "singing" part for you. Rage are also staunch activists, they did really well using "protest chants" which might make their music seem a little more catchy. There were also, IMO, the only band that successfully mixed hip hop and rock. All other attempts are garbage...again..IMO 😉
2:40 I feel the same way about System of a Down every time. I expect so much, but it never tickles me right. Love that you are real on this - that said, you also shouldn't compare. Let every song be a new experience, even if they are from the same band. Edit: I also like that you still can appreciate some parts while hating others! ❤
Loving your reviews and respect for saying you hate this. It seems like way too many reaction channels just nod along with everything and say how great it is for the likes. I love system of a down and have listened to them for the last 20 years, but they're not for everyone. A lot of people find the vocals grating, etc.
respect for being honest, usually you can never know if these types of channels actually like anything because they never dislike anything either. like who gives a shit about the reaction/review of someone who likes everything they hear
I subbed before this one, if I hadn't the raw honesty would have gotten me! I appreciate that more than anything... I hate that part too! "I'm never listening to that song again" LMAO, I've been waiting for someone to say that, now I can finally say it too!
Even as a fan, I remember this particular song being a bit of an acquired taste. It's definitely not the song I would have chosen to introduce someone to the band. You need to give BYOB a spin.
I knew this was coming from the thumbnail lol, its not supposed to envoke rage. You're comparing an antistate anthem and a song about suicide, of course they're going to have different emotional elements.
Just found you tonight. I think Hypnotize and BYOB are my favorites. Hypnotize is haunting, IMO. I remember the day BYOB was released. The local DJ decided to play it over and over until his boss made him stop. I think he managed to play it like 32 times in a row, LOL.
I think we must have similar taste in music cause I have agreed with all your assessments so far. I really like how you are totally honest in your reviews.
RobTV, I've been enjoying your reaction videos so much that I was willing to put up with this song to see what you thought. This is one of the few songs out there that I will say that I actively *hate*. Regardless, love how real you are on these - especially the love for RATM in those vids!
I know the one thing thing that makes reaction channels so popular is to get that little rush of confirmation bias like “look someone else likes it!” But honestly, thank you so much for an honest reaction - which is surprisingly rare. Reaction channels out there liking every damn song, like, c’mon now lol. Really enjoying the content RobTV, I hope this channel blows up! 🤘
"The song was intended to make a comment on the ways that people die. Malakian said that people judge others for how they pass, especially if due to any drug-related issues. “The song is about how when people die, they will be regarded differently depending on the way they pass,” said Malakian. “Like, if I were to die from a drug overdose, everyone would say I deserved it because I abused drugs, hence the line Angels deserve to die.” "
Great review, Rob. Funny 'cause this is no one's favorite System of a Down song, but it is usually considered the most "accessible" so that's the one everyone suggests to new reactors. Maybe you would have liked another song. Then maybe not. Who cares, there's so much left to explore, and maybe someday you'll return to it.
The bridge of the song came from a suggusten that Rick Rubin made to Serj when he had writers block. He told Surj open a random book on a randome page and it became, Father into your hands I commend my spirit/Father into your hands/ Why have you farsaken me. The overall meaning is about not going to a pointless war for 20 years and being a sacrificial lamb aka the Angel that deserves to die.

So many music reaction channels just go overboard with the praise like every single song is the greatest thing they've ever heard, pampering to the audience for subs, so the honesty here is refreshing. Keep doing what you're doing, it's great!
I love your reactions, I'm getting to see the music I listen to from a different angle and I truly appreciate that. Thank you
I love that you're giving a real opinion. Please keep that up! If you don't like it, let us know! I love seeing that so we know it a genuine reaction!
Awesome review man!! Thanks for the honesty. Really appreciate it.
Love the integrity in saying that you don't like something. Every god damned one of these reactions are always positive, and rarely honest. Subbed
First video I saw was Rage and like a stone, had some real doubts you were giving legit opinions, but after the killers and this one, fears were snuffed out. Great entertaining series man
One of my fave songs, but I definitely understand why you don't like it and I really appreciate your honesty!
LOL. Love the reaction. Not evryone is in to Armenian Folk Metal. Keep the great content coming.
Stay Happy and Healthy
If you want to listen to heavy system of a down songs, definitely listen to songs off the first album like “Sugar”
I love the honesty! That’s literally why I sub to any reactor, keep doing you…. Can’t wait for more
Chop Suey! is from their Toxicity album and honestly it's probably their most mainstream album and it always felt like it was kind of toned down as a result. Just listen to some stuff from their self-titled album first and see if there's something you like (and then try their other stuff).
i love how honest you are it makes me laugh almost because i never see that bluntness online much
The singer in System is a classically trained opera singer. Adds a different dimension to the sound.
'Spiders' was one of my fav from SOAD and def a little different then some of the later albums.
bro this song is a banger
Yeah SOAD is amazing but comparing it to RATM... they're entirely different styles.
Only thing htey have in common is both can be extremely political.
“Other screamo”?
RATM and SOAD are definitely not screamo 😂
@@shmick6079 Yeah I was about to say the same. Calling Rage a screaming emo band is just straight up offensive. Oak, stick with your Fall Out Boy and Job for a Cowboy. Leave our real metal out of it.
@@kennythompson9682 LMAOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO i'm definitely not into metal as much as you that's for sure so take whatever i say with a grain of salt. i'll leave metal for you though. still working my way through Megadeth now and it's a great journey
I respect your honesty.. Very refreshing.
I like soad and rage. Keep, keeping it real. 🤟✌️
Corny is the right description for SOAD. Never gave half a shit.
Been listening to this song since it's release and I still get all fired up after listening to it! All of their songs are dope !
Lonely Day, Mesmerize, Hypnotize, Deer Dance...so many good ones
this is one of my fav songs, but i respect your honesty.
No cap yet you can clearly tell he’s cappin through half the video lol
😂 the ending cracked me up!
Love your stuff man. You have me reminiscing listening to these bands for the first time.
i laughed so hard when you paused it a half second before the end and point-blank with full resolve said "im neva gonna listen to that song again" i died. love the honesty bro, hahah!
Great reaction. Its not what you like. Perfect reaction. Thanks! I really like your channel so far.
You want harder hitting System of a Down, you need to listen to stuff off of their self-titled album. Listen to "Sugar" to get your feet wet.
I think SOAD has such a unique sound, that even if your into rock/metal, it takes you by surprise and might take a listen or two to get your mind ready to jump in.
Music with a message always hits different once you know the message.
For me the disruption in the melody and buildup leading up to the final “father into my hands” part is my favorite shit in the world (+ nostalgia)
You got my like because you are being honest - I totally respect that.
I enjoy that he is honest about not liking the song! it is ok for people to not like a song! honesty is what i come here for!
I love this song and it's probably in my top 20 favorites, but i respect how honest you are. it's hard to believe reactors who have done a hundred songs and conveniently love all of them. not all of them are going to connect with everybody, and that's totally fine.
Appreciate the review, and the honesty!
Dude is 100% correct.
Going from Rage to this is like university to kindergarten.
Rage is raw. System are performative.
If you want to listen to a perfect metal song: Cemetary Gates by Pantera (Not the music video version!)
try not to compare the two, they are different but carry some similarities in that their music is used as a means to spread a message.
Definitely need to listen to BYOB, Toxicity, and Aerials. Oh! And Prison Song! Those are my recommendations.
Yeah wanna hear him go over BYOB myself honestly
2:40 I feel the same way about System of a Down every time. I expect so much, but it never tickles me right. Love that you are real on this - that said, you also shouldn't compare. Let every song be a new experience, even if they are from the same band.
Edit: I also like that you still can appreciate some parts while hating others! ❤
Love that the camera went blurry when you took your glasses off and came back when you put them on.
Honest react & that’s refreshing for this genre of UA-cam. Also like not putting up the video or lyrics, just the audio & your reactions. Subbed.
I agree for the most part here. I personally like Toxicity much more than Chop Suey.
I think we must have similar taste in music cause I have agreed with all your assessments so far. I really like how you are totally honest in your reviews.
SOADs sound isn't for everyone, but it's a VERY message driven group. They were WILD live though.
You are good man. You say it sucks when it does. That's awesome
I would also definitely recommend BYOB or Toxicity over Chop Suey, don’t give up on SOAD just yet.
The way I gasped when you said you didn’t like the singing. 😂
