Heart breaking. All those people lost. Children lost. The agonies of surgery and recollections of the survivors. The nightmares of the rescuers. Here I am a world away in the United States with tears in my eyes so many years later having only now seen this documentary. I thank God for the stirring of emotions within me. To be sensitized by this tragedy is the least I can do.
The story of the little girls and the grandparents all together, one another, shows the love and protective spirit of humans. Sincerely, An Aussie and American.

The way the community came together to help rescue people was very selfless! One part that really sticks is the fact some rescuers stayed with the injured for hours. That’s bravery. Considering the bridge was collapsing slowly. It is a damn shame any one lost their tools that’s so callused . Thank you for making this documentary the original video clips really brings this tragedy closer to my heart.
God bless all those rescuers, survivors, and the loved ones of the ones who didn't survive. The rescuers did an amazing job and as horrible as it was it could have been even worse.
So many heroes. This reminds me of the Lewisham rail crash of 1957 which also brought down a bridge. The "temporary" bridge built by the Royal Engineers is still in use today.

So happy she was able to have her 2 boys and get to love them and raise them. Im so truly sorry to the mother who lost her 2 adorable daughters and their grandparents. I could not even begin to imagine her pain over the past years since she lost them. But to hear that they were all snuggled together is such a heartwarming thing. I know as a grandparent I would also do whatever I could to save them but if I knew it may be the end I would also if able hold them tight. 😢 I love when they say they are not a hero it just shows how much of one they are!! So very sad, and once again it could have been avoided, just by the tran and rails being properly maintained. Despite this appalling crash, the quick response & brilliant teamwork by the rescue workers fire & ambulance people, it could have been so much worse! I always find it amazing & incredible that so many people pull together when something like this happens. Petty squabbles & fueds disappear & everyone acts together & perform miracles sometimes & with strength & determination to preserve life & hope. God Bless those who suffered & survived & those who didnt & their families left to cope. Its true that these tragedies could have been avoided by proper & dilligent building inspection & track maintainance Many corners are cut due to budgets & saving costs! The title of this documentary grabbed my attention immediately as I had childhood friend in Sydney I had last been there in 1975 to holiday with them at the age of 15 years I have been to Granville my childhood friend from Kenya Africa lived in Concord I know the places all by their names everyone is gone now my mother my father uncles aunts I suppose even in my friends family fate and destiny predetermined destiny would have it that I was not in Granville in the time of that disaster I lived for another 50 years more
Thanks for the post! This incident was new to me. This could actually have become a much worse disaster because of the live wires and leaking gas canisters. Remember, those train cars were made of wood. Fortunately, the rescuers were quick to shut down power to the broken wires, and as soon as they realized that some of the gas canisters were leaking they took steps to avoid an explosion and fire from that source. Crush syndrome is a real thing. A guy who got caught in a multi level highway sandwich in California during an earthquake many years ago had this happen to him. When he was finally rescued from his squashed car he was lucid and seemed to be recovering, but the damage was too severe, so he died. There are actually non fatal versions of this condition, when it just affects a crushed arm or leg. If the dying limb is removed right away the person can survive. I'm glad that so many of the people survived, but I'm outraged that the people involved in the neglect that caused the accident were never brought to justice.
I heard about crush syndrome from the Amagasaki train derailment in 2005. Since that disaster was more recent, though, it was understood that crush victims need to be flushed with fluids before they are freed to get rid of those deadly toxins.

Unfortunately, that's normal no matter the country. Money talks, so higher-ups seldom get axed, and when they do, it often doesn't fit the crime. The innocent die, the workers get killed, the first level managers get hung out to dry, and everyone else tends to walk even when everyone knows the real culprit.
Truth be this. In my position working at a company, after reading policies and being subordinate, they all of a sudden change when it is convenient to those being questioned, continuing the inconvenience to those questioning the contradictions. More only, after a FBI visit, they still continue the dissimilar pursuit. Overall, in pursuit of personal understanding, it is due to certain facts partial to individuals bickering in between one another and creating a more arduous situation. I can close this case by saying, those in power, once crossed, their egos go ballistic and they will do as much as they please, to appease the little hurt brought on by truth. Of course, if you have a big pocket, do not worry what borders you cross. It will be the same for you, as those pursuing to control their big pockets will do the least to discontinue their progress.
It would be impossible to identify "responsible people.' In the USA, infrastructure maintenance is a low priority simply because of money. Taxes need to be increased to allow maintenance to be done: you get what you pay for. Obviously, waiting for disasters is unacceptable, but ultimately the blame goes to all of us too stupid to support making the necessary expenditures for maintenance.

It was found that the bridge had been damaged in two previous train collisions, and also had so much concrete added on top that it was double the weight of the original design. So its original designers and engineers were not at fault, but those responsible for modifying it and maintaining it were partly at fault. The railroad was also at fault for poor maintenance of the tracks and trains.

JFK happened and his wife was Huey Longs cousin ...assassinated presidential candidate in the fam....1936....1963 she had fits ...We moved to Arizona pretty quick and gramps missed the gold watch by a few days and lived happily ever after in Prescott Az. Our new neighbor was Ralph George ...he invented television maybe you heard of it ... a 33 foot NASA dish appeared in our adjacent lot as Dr. Palmquist built next...He invented JPL NASA SETI... Betty Crocker lived up the creek and at the top of thumb butte was Mrs Schwinn ... Her husband Smitty ran the Schwinn shop. So I'm approaching 70 now and I just remembered ...Grandfather never let us near a train ... Hmm.. he spent his life.crawlingnover smoking heaps of steel and screams and bodies ... No wonder
