  • This video is an update to my initial review of the Garmin Tacx Neobike and the video of the pedal coming off. Tried to fix things the way Garmin said, and a bolt snapped off in the crank arm. Had to send the bike back for a replacement. We'll see how it goes...

    The plastic cap is not a retainer, it's used to preload the crank, similar to most Shimano cranks. You can buy alloy ones from the internet, but it's not really needed. I didn't have any issues with the cranks on my bike, though it does have issue caused by sticky pawls. Overall it does seem to have some issues, but mine survived so far, almost 2 years of use, around 550hours total, but I do need to clean up the pawls every week though, takes 2-3minutes but still annoying.

      Interesting - I wonder if the new version has those problems as well. I'm not too mechanically inclined - didn't want to have to become a bike mechanic to keep an indoor bike going!

      Exactly, that plastic cap is on lots of Shimano cranks and you don’t need to tighten that with power. Tighten it by hand. You do need the torch wrench to tighten the crank. Google for some crank videos so you got an understanding of the crank.

      I have exactly the same problem with the left arm. The problem is that I can't find the cover and the tightening key of the bolt fixing part. Which part from Shimano would be compatible?

    Hey Eric, hope you get the replacement soon, but as you say, plus side it the weather is good (ish)
    As you know, same issue for me too. Definitely seems to be quite a common issue, and the plastic pre load thing does NOT help matters. Tried aluminium too but they fail in the end. I am guessing it is a lateral force issue, so only some people suffer it.
    Yet to give my fix a proper test but hoping to this week.
    I have the opposite issue to you. One of my actual bikes is off for warranty work, so I only have the trainer, the gravel bike or the single speed.

      Your fix does look great - I'll have the parts on hand as a fallback plan this time around. It's no fun having a really expensive bike out of commission - it's definitely had me bummed out for the last few weeks.

    Don't feel bad I've not been on an indoor bike for over the month the weather has just been too good (for outdoor cycling, gym, outdoor running etc)

      I've been enjoying outdoor riding, for sure. It's just always nice to hop in Zwift if I don't have a lot of time or it's raining.

    having similar issues with mine, on my second one now since November, left pedal lossend and was making a creak so returned it, my new one had a wobble in the left pedal which I used that kit at the weekend to fix with new pinch bolt (identical to one I replaced) however reseating & greasing seems to have helped the wobble. My next problem is the slippage in power I feel at over 1100w which isnt the biggest of deals but is frustrating when racing. Im wondering if theres a better option as I do love it but know the kickr has issues also. sub`d for your future videos. Noticed you dont actually have a bike there, I told garmin I wanted a replacement before mine was shipped back, paid a refunded deposit but meant no gap in my training for future reference!

      I didn't want to mess around with the deposit in case some weird clerical things happened and it got held up or something of that nature. Hopefully the second one will be better!

    hey Eric, I don't like the idea of a $5k dedicated bike that you can only ride indoors, compared to using a smart trainer ($1k) and putting on your #2 road bike (that's what I use) as your indoor trainer; (and can be used as a back up bike outdoors) apart from 'fit'; no issues as road bike is made for punishment, where your indoor training isn't robust or evolved enough for the level you're using it for - these crank issues happened on road bikes in the 80s. imho more a toy.

      I get it about the bike being a one-trick pony, but that’s what appealed to me. When I got it, I didn’t have a second road bike - maybe I would’ve went that direction if I did. I’ve got a fix planned if the pedal thing happens again.

      @@marcus_velo_9970 lol, nothing that severe. There's a particular hack running around the Tacx forums with a bolt replacing the plastic bits that people are having good results with. I just wanted to give Garmin a chance to fix the issue.

    Hi Eric. Please follow up. Did you get a new bike and what was really wrong?

    • @ericbarnettcycling
      @ericbarnettcycling  6 місяців тому

      I did get a replacement refurbished Tacx bike shipped to me free under warranty after shipping my old one back to Garmin. Ultimately, the left crank arm becoming loose and/or falling off was a fairly common problem in that generation of bike (not sure about subsequent models). The second bike is still going strong after 8 months and thousands of miles. I've talked to other Tacx Neo Bike owners who have had more than one replacement, but always have a pretty easy time dealing with Garmin's customer service. I'm still glad I bought the bike and ride it often!

      Do you know how to separate the bikes that had this issue? Are you still happy with the new one?

    • @ericbarnettcycling
      @ericbarnettcycling  6 місяців тому

      @@eskility not sure if there’s a certain serial # or production run - I’m fairly certain it’s the way the left crank arm was designed that is the weak link. There are some plastic parts & softer metals. I’m still happy with the new one. I’ll try to figure out just how many miles in have on it this weekend.

      @@ericbarnettcycling great to hear. You would still buy it again? I just find it more appealing than for example stages. I just bought it myself. I guess if you actually receive one with the crank issue you can at least expect a new fixed one. I find having a turbo trainer too cumbersome and want something always ready.
