- A Sprinter 4x4 can take you really far, far away. And that's the point right. But are you prepared for when something goes wrong with your van in a remote and far off-the-beaten-path location. Peter Holcombe is on his 10th year of full-time overland travel. In this video, he talks about his Sprinter van emergency repair kit. This kit is built out of real-world experience of what can and does go wrong.

That's a great thing to have onboard. Thanks.
Incredible, this is the best video on what to carry for the sprinter. I am grateful for this video, I’ve learned a lot. I’ll be doing some more shopping done for my emergency kit. Thank you.
Hey Sadie, Thanks so much. I'm super glad to hear that it helped. I hope you have a great summer!
This is a great list Peter. I have a couple of suggestions: Plumbing repair kit with pex fittings, teflon tape, clamps and tubing. Flex Seal tape in case you get a hole in your def tank (it happens). PB Blaster to break those rusty lug nuts free. More Zip ties. Roadside safety triangle and magnetic red flashing light.
Thanks for the tips! I should so another video that is more on the Revel side of things. Great additions though. Thanks for watching!
Great video
Don’t forget
- ODB2 scanner
- Flex seal, sikaflex, silicone
- Black latex gloves
- Cordless drill + battery
- Cordless impact wrench + battery
- ODB2 scanner
- Fuses
- Diesel 911 anti-gel
- Multi-meter
- Blue Ridge Overland Gear tool bag
Awesome list, Yes, I have most of that. Thanks so much!
Great video and you mentioned a few things I haven’t gotten already, so I’ll be off shopping for a few items. Just a heads up on the Agile jack. The adapter is great on the axel in the rear, but if you take that adapter off and just go with the the knob it fits perfectly in the hole in the factory cut hole in cross bar by the tire. It offer more stability when jacking the front.
Hey Jeff, This is a great point that I should have mentioned. Thanks for that tip!
good list there :) I also carry some silicone/sealant , stuff for roofrepairs and leaks.
Great tip! That's good to have also.
Excellent!! Thank you👍
Thank you too!
Just checked my Power Steering hose on my 2016 and it has been leaking. The 2" hose to radiator below it was soaked. Luckily I still have fluid. The dealer must have missed the obvious soaked hose when I had my routine 40K maintenance a few months ago. Imagine that.
Glad you caught it! Maybe bring a few bottles of power steering fluid with you in case it blows. It's easy to pop the hose back on with a hose clamp, refill the steering fluid and get back on the road. Once I extended mine it's worked great.
Just watched your other video "New Problem new year and that got me thinking maybe it was the intercooler hose leaking and causing all that oil on the hose. Replaced the hose and apon inspecting my original hose I do not see any damage to the hose but I see more oil above where it attaches to the front side of the vehicle.. Maybe it was that inside gasket leaking in the hose? Called the Dealer and they wanted $280 for the hose and 2 hours labor at $250 per hour for a 10 minute job.
Always take along a spare axle 😉
That's a great suggestion. Where were you last week? 🧐
@@Famagogo Sorry, I just found your site and have been thinking about such a trip with my old roadtrek rv. I've always thought that maybe I should drag a small trailer along with more spares, fuel, food, etc. Now I'm sure of it. I hope everything goes well.
Great usefull video. With all dirt roads in off roading, don't you keep a spare air filter? And change frequently or not ?! Thanks
Air filters are big, a little fragile and pretty easy to find at most auto parts stores. I typically blow them out with my air compressor on the trail after a really dusty day. So, I don't normally pack a extra air filter. That was a great question. Thanks for watching!
Hi Peter, your videos have been excellent and I really appreciate the practical “what could go wrong with my Sprinter” videos, excellent resource for being prepared. This video has also been helpful, and I wanted to ask you about the storage panel you have on your drivers rear door. Where did you get that or do you have a recommendation of a storage wall like that? I need space for all these tools you are recommending. : )
Thanks,
Steve
Hi Steve, thanks for that. This is a Canyon Adventure Vans product called the “Doorganiser”. You can find out more n the website.
Additional tire pressure gauge is good because if the van is stationary and hasn’t been driven the computer won’t read the tire pressure until the van is in motion, this is the case on 2022 chasis , on 2023 Revel
Just one more reason. Great point! Thanks!
Great info and video! Where did you get a replacement cap for the Thetford cassette?
Give Thetford a call. I bet they can get you one. I had one from a tank I replaced in the past. I tend to keep parts like this for later.
All good stuff, but you are wasting a bit of valuable space in some areas. For the road a basic wire stripper is good enough and tiny. Why keep the near empty duct tape when you have another new one? Most VHB tape comes with a tiny core. An extravagance would be to swap that drill for a right angle one. Its smaller, good enough and will fit in the inevitable tight space better. Speaking of tight spaces, add a 1/4 rachet for bits, that will get screws out with less than an inch of space. Zipties are a must and I found an angle grinder useful for all manner of things for cutting wrong size bolts to fashioning replacement running board endcaps. Which would be another thing to have a spare or two of (revel rather than sprinter addition). You could also save space by getting a couple of small parts boxes, fishing hook box etc and ditching all the packaging of screws etc. Not trying to be critical with my comments, just add to the convo. Another thing thats very useful is a length of pvc pipe on the roof for lifting low wires, bonus points if its same height as van as a gauge. Sure, you dont need it on the interstate, but as you head into far flung areas, used at least twice a day. If you go up on the van time after time whilst holding up traffic, not a safe place to rush. Next up, a recovery gear video please.
Hey Mark, These are great suggestions! I wouldn't have expected any less for you. Thanks. It's funny how you piece this all together little by little. It's always been a certain way and then when someone looks at it from the outside they have an obvious but great new perspective. Thanks. Especially the repackaging of certain things (electrical connectors, screws/nuts/bolts). I do have the zip ties and grinder. But lately I ditched the grinder as you can borrow or buy a cheep one so easily and I was only using it once a year or so. Great tips! Thanks for that.
upper and lower radiator hose
That’s a good one too. Do you think radiator hose tape is good enough or you should bring both replacement hoses? The tape would be a temporary fix until I could reach a MB shop to get new hoses. We do have very limited space in the van.
I'm looking to buy a Revel myself and was looking for all kind of info, tips, insider info. Those are all awesome tips, some of those are were little worrisome as I assume your van is not that old, why are hoses braking already?
Hey, thanks for watching. I haven’t broken a hose in 5-6 years. But in some of the very remote and international places I hope to visit soon it’s cheap insurance on a known issue. Don’t let it scare you. 90% or more of people will never need one but if your way out there and you do it turns a bad day into nothing more than a hiccup.
I had the same thoughts while watching the great video! Lots of valuable information!
I carry an older phone. It’s got all of my information that I have remembered the back up along with PDF information from all the various manufacturers of components on the van. I just assume someday I’m gonna lose my phone or it’s going to die and I need Plan B
I do not keep it active on a cellular plan. It would need Wi-Fi to communicate until I can activate.
You are the second person today that has mentioned the benefits of keeping an old phone around for things like this. That's a great idea! I'll do that in the future. Maybe I need a new phone soon than I thought.
A firearm for sure, especially in remote areas, but I’m sure you also have that covered!
This was focused on the Sprinter tool kit. But yes, agreed.
Great tips! BTW, did you ever see DEF for sale in Mexico? Also, I am thinking to bring an extra fuel filter in the event that the one on board fouls up due to bad fuel. I believe that there are alternatives to having that dreaded plastic clip there that seems to easily break..
Thanks, Walter, Yes, The Auto Zone in La Paz had DEF. I did bring one extra brick. That was plenty to get me back to the border. I think the diesel is good down there, but it's never bad to have an extra filter onboard. I would love to know about a clip alternative. I seem to break or lose one every third filter change. I did get extra clips from an MB dealer. But I think I only have one spare left. Thanks for watching and for your support!
@@Famagogo I broke one and was in the midst of a (driveway) replacement. Opted to use soft brass wire to create a retention. It's been fine, but I ordered a new clip to have for the next one.
Hello. I just installed an ARB twin compressor. I'm out of town and not near the rig, but I have no memory of seeing or installing a relay. Is the relay integrated with the compressor? What's the part number? Thanks
Yes, I got my extra relay from the guys at Agile Offroad. It's a very common relay. You might call them to ensure you get the correct part for your compressor. My relay is listed as SEALED (12V,40A) 180905 on the ARB install guide, page 24. store.arbusa.com/content/CKMTA12_Installation%20Guide.pdf
Don't forget to carry flux with your soldering iron/solder. You won't be able to solder without it!
Yes, thanks. Gotta have it too.
Do you have the part # for the turbo hose?
Hello, This is the part number for my van. Yours could be differant. I like to get parts from AutohousAZ.

What are you using for a door organizer?
This is the Canyon Adventure Vans Doorganizer. It's been very useful. Here is a link. canyonadventurevans.com/products/van-door-organizer?_pos=10&_psq=door&_ss=e&_v=1.0
Why not use your house battery if you need a jump?
That could be a possibility. In fact the older Winnebagos has a switch on the dash to start from the house batteries. But that somehow went away with the advance on Lithium batteries. I find it easier to use the jumper battery but that could be a good plan B.
EGR gasket in case you need to clean it. You can find carb cleaner anywhere but maybe not the gasket.
I'll just hire you to ride shotgun to be there to handle any repair issues
Sounds great! Where are we off to next?
Convert it to non DEF. Fuck the EPA
