  • I wanted to test the Stihl FS 311 for a while because of it's light weight but had doubts or it's power was sufficient enough for my work. Thanks to Poel Amsterdam for providing the Stihl FS 311 to give a proper test. Check out there webite at: www.poelonline.nl/nl

Thanks a lot for the video. It looks like a nice nearly identical update for my trusty but aging fs300. Appreciate your time…

I think barely anyone here in United States has a 311 but I do and I like it. The anti-vibration is very good which was the main selling point for me. I mostly use mine with oregon gator 105 line. The head the 311 takes holds more line than a typical trimmer head which is nice but they are also more expensive. 50 bucks for a trimmer head. The 311 just has the regular fs131 engine and doesn't have a huge amount of power but it's pretty strong, and depends what ur cutting. Its low powered for a clearing saw and high powered for a weed whacker. Keep in mind the 311 is classified as a clearing saw and the bigger ones get heavier real quick. I tried on an fs 461 at the store and that thing was very very heavy. I do a lot of hillsides. The FS 311 feels about as heavy as my FS 240 for reference. My 311 definitely feels heavier than my 131 but its noticeably less vibrations too.

Thanks for posting your experience with the FS 311. I'm not sure you're correct about it being classified as a clearing saw. I believe that Stihl's brushcutter/clearing saw line begins with the FS 361 and has only 3 models (461 and 561, also). These start at $1,200, which is nearly double the FS 311's $670 price tag.
I think the FS 311 is a bit of a hybrid. It takes the FS 131 platform and adds the gearbox, vibration dampening, trimmer head, ergonomics, and harness of the brushcutter line. It's the top of the Stihl trimmers, but the FS 311 is still just a trimmer.
I couldn't ever find any dealer around me that knew anything about the FS 311. I contacted Stihl about the unit and all I got was a barely intelligible spec sheet data dump, along with a weird plug for the FS 56 ... because, sure, that's the tradeoff scenario most people are considering: FS 311 or FS 56. Hmmm, the machines are so close to one another in price and performance that it's tough to decide. SMH.
Ultimately, I wanted the deluxe harness that comes with the FS 311 and that alone is a $75 upgrade to the FS 131. So, I was already more than half way of the price difference between the two units ... so I plunked down the remaining $65 and ordered the 311 at my dealer. Maybe I'll post something when it comes in.

@@67L48 You may be right but I’m just not sure why else they would put an oversized gearbox and driveshaft if it wasn’t considered a clearing saw.

I worked on this for 6 years, it would be better if it had 2 times more power, that is, 2.8 kW. It has a very small motor...

why would you need so much power ? I have fs 410 and its beast, the dude here cuts like noob

@@dragonmerchant Still, sometimes 2.8 kilowatts is not enough. It’s not enough, the engine doesn’t pull, the grass is thick.

@@guntis_rakausks Use blades or saws then. I work in the industry for 10 years now. I dont use 2.8kw machines anymore as they are waste of money and health. and I do forestry with trimmers aswell the shorter K models. trust me you dont need 2.8 kw for grass

@@dragonmerchant I just have to cut the grass with a trimmer line. In previous years I used knives, but there were many problems. I'm just tired of this for a long time. Of course, it is easier to mow grass with knives, but only where there is a flat surface and there are no stones, iron objects, wires and other debris. Unfortunately, there are very few such places, but I need to work.

@@guntis_rakausks You need a better quality knive than. personally I use knives to cut around obstacles and line on metals and stones. forests especially are uneven places. never had a problem once. 2kw 2.2kw trimmers are best for the job. lighter in weight easier to manuever. used to have 2.8 kw husqwarna and stihl . not anymore. fs 410 fs 460 are the best trimmers money can buy
