- So recently i made a video talking about some of the hazbin hotel redesign drama that was happening over on youtube and tumblr. This whole situation had died down quite a lot until the other day when a youtuber by the name of lavendertowne made a video jumping in on the topic

I think many people fail to realize that artists have certain styles and personal ways of making things, just because something is very stylized doesn't mean it's necessarily "bad" it's just that person's style even if somewhat niche
I feel like while that is true there’s definitely still room to criticize the designs. I’m a fan of the show but the character designs aren’t perfect imo
While people did take issue with the redesign, one of the biggest reasons the video got so much hate was the creators complete lack of research into the show. She claimed to watch it and yet one of her alterations to Charlie's design was to add horns because "it's weird she didn't have horns in the show as a demon".
She showed a complete disregard for the source material and trashed on the designs with blatantly false information and was poorly researched.
It's one thing to criticize a design choice. It's another entirely to be entirely wrong about an observation and try and "fix it".
@@Actualbowlofsoup Criticizing a design isn't bad, but doing so with nearly no knowledge on the characters and the show they're in is. Viv's designs definitely ain't perfect, but critiquing them without actually doing much research is pretty pharisaic.
She's a great artist that does a lot of research into the topics she talks about, but it's clear she didn't bother to review the lore of Hazbin Hotel much before making the video.

But im glad she’s going to make a remake with further knowledge of the show, just a shame the community was so harsh to her. Dumb mistake yeah, but i feel as if its overblown

For a second I thought she was about to get cancelled, I was SOOOO ready to remove her from my list of art UA-camrs I'm allowed to watch.
She is one of the calmest people in the art community who gives good advice and does not jump to conclusions about anyone’s taste in art which feels refreshing in the community as there are ironically judgmental people in the art community.

It is okay to redesign the characters. It is never okay to be an obnoxious and saying that your redesign is way more preferable than the original canon design in a rude way. I made my redesign of characters from other shows. I’m not an obnoxious. I love doing redesign for fun. If it’s actually my style, I still do it for fun and not being obnoxious.
Note: I made this comment for everyone, including the people that are redesigners.
Omg me too!! I only did it to have fun putting my own twist to the characters unlike some artists who did it in a harsh, mean-spirited manner.

This the problem when Lavender took off the video instead of pin a comment under it. People start to interpret with little information still circulating around. She was not obnoxious but you can tell easily she likely did not watch the entire show or did not really like the show so paid vey little attention when watching that made Lavender really not in a good position to make constructive criticism.

It's quite weird how she removed ALL animal characteristics of the characters and she didn't even draw Husker
yeah well he was all animal so when she was removing the animal traits his entire character had to go, lmao.
For me I think the main reason why a lot of people hate redesigns so much is because most (not all, just a good chunk of them) do the redesigns without even knowing the story first. So when they show their new designs, a lot of the needed themes and references are just gone and the character would no longer make sense within the context of the story.
If we compare Alastor original to her redesign, you will not be able to tell he was the radio demon, losing his iconic mic and vintage aesthetic. He instead looks like a talk show host or reporter with a more modern or retro look. Not really fitting his "radio demon" title. Even more so, Alastor having deer antlers would mostly be a refrenced to him being a cannibal. Here being represented that hes a wendigo. A monster (usually with a deer theme) who eats people.
So her redesigns dont really sound like "I think would be better for the show" but more "I saw this in the internet and didnt like it, so heres a better version that I did" kind of thing.
I think redesigns are fine as a small exercise to do to test yourself and see how you can use your art style, but when you start acting like you somehow know better then person who actually drew them with their own vision and style in mind thats when its a problem.
If she had said this is just a redesign I did for fun because I was bored, I'd of said "That's cute." But the way she framed it, THAT was the biggest issue.
The fact she not only rushed the video but mistook fanart for official art is baffling considering the show has been out for a few months. She had plenty of time to watch it in full, and that would've absolutely helped her in redesigning the characters.
Like I'm not going to act like Vivzie's designs are 100% perfect but she clearly tries to be clear with what her inspirations for her character designs are and her silhouettes are distinct. There's more I can say about Vivzie's designs, good and mediocre, but I hope my point is clear.
That video was definitely one that was more for business purposes than actual inspiration. She probably wasnt a huge fan of the show to begin with but saw it was getting traction so decided to make a quick video to draw people to her channel, only for it to backfire. While she should have done a bit more research before jumping into making that video, i cant really blame her for trying to make a quick buck off of something that’s trendy. Content creators, especially art ones, need to always jump on new trends or their channels will die. And tbf, she is a full time youtuber and comic creator, so watching the show might not exactly fit into her schedule.
I'm a huge fan of her but it's really disappointing to see other fans saying she did nothing wrong. People will be ignorant for the sake of favoritism :/
Dawg just because a media is popular doesn't mean somebody's gonna watch it. While it's understandable to be frustrated by it, we all make mistakes. And sure, it was a lil unprofessional but she isn't some content machine. It's a stupid slip up, and?
@@ronan5642 I don't expect her to be a content machine, I expect some to ideally know more than just the basics about a show whose characters they're redesigning. The thing is, say what you will about the original designs, but there's clearly effort and intent/importance to the character and their background. I don't see the same in LavenderTowne's redesigns.

I find it kind of insulting to take someone else's characters and try to "fix" them into what you think is best.
This video has done a really good job at explaining this situation, it's a shame that there was a lack of research in the redesign video, but hopefully this can be a learning experience and it will be improved with future videos. Nice Job with this one, I'll be sure to watch more videos in the future! 😁

At 1:23, im SOOO glad you brought up the characters blending in with the background! I remember watching the show when it first aired thinking that something just felt...off? Like its too flat(in a sense where there really isnt any depth)? Then I realized, like you point out, the background needs to be darkened with additional shadows. Its one of the reasons why the pilot is more visually appealing to me. 😬🙌
I don't even really care much about this fandom aside from listening to some of the songs, but...yikes. I usually love LavenderTowne's art, but those redesigns look atrocious, and so bland compared to the originals! Hopefully she comes out with a better version.

I'm sorry but the fact that people are getting genuinely mad over redesigns of the characters?? I get that you guys like the show and all but don't take this the wrong way when I say it's kind of a stupid thing to get mad over? If anything, redesigns from people (whether they like the show or not) is the last thing I would normally expect people to get mad over.

Redesign art isn't bad if you're doing it for fun, but doing it to "fix" another artist's work is where the problem is. As an artist myself I don't mind criticism, but to have some correct my work like it's wrong would make me mad.

Also i saw the original video and she spent most of it giving constructive criticism( how everyone has similar colour pallets, and body types) in the most respectful way possible, and did a quick little drawing at the end.
She has also made another video apologising and properly designing them with lore.
I never watched the video, but Ifeel bad for her. She didn't watch it and I don't blame her, she is probably busy and I haven't watched it myself and every artist has a style. I really adore her art style and its sad that she deleted her video due to criticism being taken way too far.

The color palette in Hazbin Hotel being repetitive does bother me but if I were to redesign characters I'd stick to their themeing and just attempt to use various shades or just experimenting with various color pallets. Although, I don't draw. I do coloring, inking, and calligraphy so I don't think I have the right to talk about redesigning or redrawing characters to be more appealing to certain people. Since everyone will have a varying opinion about what is and isn't good character design.

LavenderTowne is a very sweet natured person, and she did remake this video because of the backlash and even addressed that she didn’t know it was official art
This is kinda her thing. She redesigns characters all the time. I think people took this way too personally and just lumped her in with all the haters when she was really just doing her usual thing. There was some valid criticisms and thankfully LavenderTowne is pretty unproblematic and took it well. I'm excited to see her new redesigns after watching the series.

Very disappointing to see Lavender drop so low to make videos solely for the views and to bank off of its popularity, rather than to make an actual good redesign video. But it also goes to show how much people have put her on a pedestal. She’s not a saint

I dunno, alastor being a certain race never really occurred to me before.. I always kinda thought he was more.. gray? demon colored. Like all the cannibals in cannibal town. I wouldn't jump to calling this white washing. Not trying to defend lavender though, I haven't seen the whole video yet but I did see her drawing.
I'd love to know if vivzie confirmed alastor's race or whatever but I don't think it was meant to be a harmful act. Vaggie also has gray skin the show, although darker and lavender didn't make her white.
@@slasherenthusiast His skin doesn't look grey to me. It's more of a light tan color. Which not great is better then the nasty poo greenish colors that Lavender picked. Like I think I got what she was going for. But she failed miserably.

i mean, in lavendertowne's defense, that's just how her art style looks like, so not everyone likes how they look in said art style, and in my honest opinion, they don't look really good, but they're not really bad either, some parts of the designs are pretty good, while others are not, it just depends on how different people view the art style, and personal preferences on design and style, so fight me about it, but i myself believe that this is a valid point to counteract the drama surrounding the redesigns

I think Husk is super visually everywhere, but I'm still a student in the CD department so I'm not going to claim I know what I'm talking about: I think he should be fatter, he's literally a drunk. I like the idea that this cat character can fly but, in general, he's really busy and complicated. I didn't design the characters, nor do I know the show very well, so it's just an opinion

i think the biggest problem with the redesigns it the fact that they are actually vivzies characters - in like private ocs. its different when the characters are made just for the show by the studio like mlp or some animes. this is just disrespectful towards viv who clearly is very attached to all of them

@ioxalt, she's talking about how you need to look outside of the show to find information about these characters. I.e, social media, live streams, etc.
something I see way too much on this corner of the internet is Vivzie stans violently berating people who mybe give thier feedback a little harsh and say all sorts of things to artists for disliking Viv's designs. Like, some of the feedback is actually valid, and treating Vivzie like an inerrant deiety is simply toxic. yapping about how vaggie can't be thick because she's an exterminator or about someone removing an obscure detail on a design that was brought up in a livestream isn't viable, because not everybody knows every single obscure bit of lore, and it doesn't detract from the visual storytelling when there are more obvious and less eyestraining ways to do it.
I think the things that she's been required to over explain in the follow up videos show that a few of your points here are assumptions/exaggerations.

He literally went out of his way to make his whole Exorcist army all slim women with nearly identical body types that he found attractive and also worked as the whole having the same silhouette thing so that they all look the same when in uniform.
She out of all character would be the least likely to be not slim as hell.

yeah, but she also, for all intents and purposes, was "kicked out of heaven" and has been in hell for around two years (iirc). who is to say her regimen wouldn't have changed over that time? she even makes a comment to carmilla that she's not used to fighting with long hair-- you could easily use the same line of thinking to justify her falling out of shape and being out of practice with fighting. just change "long hair" to "put on some weight"-- there are many ways you could spin it where it would make sense for vaggie to have a different body type from the other exorcists at this point in the story.
@@fishbowlheretic her entire character and role in the hotel is being Charlie's body guard and security staff of the hotel. She still carries her spear around everywhere.
I doubt she'd fall out of shape since her relationship with Charlie is pretty blatantly her trying to be her "guardian angel" for lack of a better term and protect her. So she's still keeping in shape to be adept for combat and correcting/stopping any problematic Sinners that attempt anything at the hotel
Well that and if we make the assumption people can even gain weight in hell. Imps and hellborn definitely can.
But I'm not entirely sure about sinners since they're dead human souls.

I liked lavendertowne's videos but when she made a comment saying she didn't know the point of Alastor's ears and she couldn't see that he resembled a deer or a wendigo made me mad like GURLLLL it's right there! Although props to her for admitting her mistake and apologizing for not doing much research. Her redesign of Angel Dust is so bland because he looks like just some dude. She removed all his sexual elements which takes away a lot of his character as a p0rn star
It made sense that she hadn't seen the show, I think the designs were good as character designs instead of character redesigns. It’s absolutely OK for people to give her criticism, but the people making fun of her art and telling her it’s terrible is like way too far. It’s honestly just super unnecessary. You can give criticism without being an absolute jerk.
I honestly think she shouldve watched the show before creating redesigns of the characters so she'd be able to redesign each character with their personality/distinct character features in mind.
And yeah the research would've helped too.

Angel looks like a Gacha fem boy, Vaggie is just a generic human, Niffty looks like an opposite version, instead of looking cute on the outside being being deranged on the inside, she looks deranged but is actually a sweetie on the inside, and Alastor lost his personality to the Ink Machine. The only one that looks good is Charlie. She retains her personality and I like the addition of the horn crown, that’s clever
Yall are overreacting, i watched the original video and she spent most of the time pointing out(not bashing) some of the very reasonable flaws( everyone has the same colour palette, same body type etc) and made a quick rough drawing at the end there was not a bit of snark or rude comment at all,
She had to take down the video due to toxic HH fans but unfortunately that caused a snowball of miscommunication.
She is a professional artist,she apolized, watched the full show, researched lore and already has a new video out with much better drawing and really cool lore details too.

I think what especially sucks about this whole thing is that redesigning characters from popular shows for fun is not new and the only reason this is such an upset is because of how controversial Hazbin and Vivzie are in general. I definitely think something was up behind the scenes on lavenders video just cuz this is the furthest thing from normal from her and her content in general, I’m glad she’s taking the time to handle this with grace and I look forward to her follow up video

One of the main issues with the redesign trend (aside from the fact that it gets labelled "FiXiNg") is that in an effort to tone down the more overbloated aspects of Viv's designs, some artists wind up going the opposite extreme and essentially basic-bitch-ifying them for lack of better word. It's sacrificing visual appeal for the sake of making the designs less convoluted when these two things should be able to coexist.
I do have to admit that I was very disappointed in her designs (no hate of course) I was extremely surprised because it didn't really feel like her style? Hell in her other videos (even the video she released AFTER the hazbin vid was deleted) look phenomenal! She does do her research to make designs so I don't know what the heck happened here. With bits and bobs to accentuate looks, like her character designs are amazing. I just wished she put in that same effort to Hazbin. I'm glad she realized she made a mistake and is going to do better.

I don’t see the problem here. Yes she had a mistake with the rush resigns but y’all acting like she harassed and doxxed Viz herself.
The problem is she traced over fanart because she assumed it was official, and said she watched the show but also commented about "I don't know why he has those ears." Or "it's weird she didn't have horns in the show as a demon." I love lavender but she very obviously did this because hazbin is popular. I'm glad she apologized and took down the video though

Any redesign made with malicious intent is going to be ugly to me. Doesn't matter how good it looks, if it is genuinely an improvement or not, it is going to be soured by the negativity behind it. You could have spent that energy making positive art for something else, so you wasted both our time with this.
