In your experience, how much listening does one have to do to really understand the majority of native speech? For instance, how much daily listening did you do when you were learning? What type of listening? Was it short, intense bursts, did you get to a point where you just started listening to large amounts of content without worrying about the details, etc? I'm really curious because I'm at a kind of high intermediate area in French and when I listen I can understand a great deal, and I have improved drastically over the last six months or so, but it is still tiring, difficult. I have to concentrate quite hard and I'm curious how much listening is a good ball park figure. Sorry for the ramble but I would love to hear your experience. Thank you.
I am definitely not an expert to say anything definitively. But i can share what i learned from experience. I am not a native English speaker. I had to learn it. Initially i hardly understood anything while listening. But after years of watching and listening movies, cricket commentary, news, various youtube videos and whatnot in my target language i.e. English i am now able to understand every single word uttered by irrespective of any English speaker without a hitch. I guess, it took me around 2-3 years to get where i am now. My assumption is for my today's listening ability is attributed not solely to mere listening to different contents but also to my endeavour in enriching vocabulary. This combination has to go on in pace with one another. For instance, no matter however much you listen without paying heed to the vocabulary enrichment simultaneously, you will struggle. In terms of French, i think it will take me much longer. For one thing, they talk incredibly fast or so it seems to me. For another, there are a number of words in french which are too small and subtly pronounced for a non-native to understand.
This is immensely helpful for me! I'm looking forward to watching Amélie again (and again, and again - my favorite film!) and using some of these techniques to improve my comprehension. Thank you very much!
Speaking of starting with something familiar, when teaching my children French I would use DVD's especially on the days we needed to be in the car. There are great options for familiar shows with French subtitles, our favorites were What's New Scooby Doo and many Disney movies. I have also found Franklin, Little Bear and Calliou from Amazon.ca (good resource for French materials for those of us in US). I just have to note that although subtitles are not particularly helpful for preschoolers, instead I try to find things to point out to them, like why the song is "Quoi de Scooby Doo", or to listen for certain words or phrases we know well. Thank you for your encouragement, insight and hard work.
I would love to see you actually guide us through 5 minute scenes from films. Example format: Scene, translation, scene again. I think it would be an extremely popular format.
Nevermind! I wrote that before the last 3 minutes of the video. That was perfect (except as a beginning student, I would have appreciated a few more translations on every page). Many more examples of that would quadruple your subscribers, at least. Thanks!

This seems to be an old thread so I don't know if "le prof" still follows and responds or not but I have an issue that as a French teacher in the United States is driving me crazy. I am having great difficulty (bordering on the impossible) finding French films without English subtitles and with the option of having no subtitles or French subtitles. You can stream it from multiple sources but they have fixed English subtitles (which I do like using sometimes but not often). I learned French in France watching a wide variety of tv, movies, news broadcasts, etc.) so I know it works. But at every turn I'm being impeded from teaching it your way. I have tried purchasing from France (FNAC or French Amazon) but apparently it is illegal to sell these versions outside of France.
I've watched several of your videos and I really love this idea of combining what is apparently a PowerPoint slide show with the video clip embedded within which allows you to place notes or whatever you wish to do. I'm assuming you embedded the video into the slideshow, and then transformed the slideshow into a video. Really great. It's a lot of work, especially if you're trying to "automate" certain cues the correspond with specific moments during the clip (a star and a "bell" that appears at the moment you're approaching some aspect of key listening, for example). My solution is the following for my other issue: I have bought the film (the one I have been working on now is "La nouvelle guerre des boutons") and have a program that "rips" the movie (which of course since I bought the DVD is perfectly legal). I take the initial rip, which then has no subtitles and then then find the srt file online and use a production software to create two versions: one with French subtitles and one with no subtitles.
I would love to watch this movie in French with French subtitles, but I do not know where to do it. I looked on Netflix. They have the movie in French but they do not have a subtitles option in French. Any advice?
hey to get the french subtitles on netflix, u have to change your language settings. you have to change from english to french.Your entire profile will be shown in french.Then All french movies will have option for french subtitles as well as english.

Most French people speak very fast , naturally ; if 1 in4 utterances are understood then I think the gist of the conversation can be picked up ,rather like pidgin English I suppose ?

Out of the whole lesson there is only 2 minutes of actual GUIDED FRENCH In my opinion with your good comprehention of two lenguages you could make your channel really popular among the people trying to master French. Just cut the banalities out of the lesson to make them to 5 upto 10 minutes long lessons with maximum one minute introduction. Not 20 minutes. Just remember there is a repeat button in UA-cam. Sorry if I was a bit brusque.
If you want to dramatically improve your listening you should work on pronunciation skills. I'd suggest some advanced course, where they omit sounds and link words as in real fast speech. If you want to use movies or podcasts it'd be great if you have subtitles and not simply listening but analyse and REPEAT especially difficult parts.
your video is usefull but tiring. I think you could make them shorter and try not to talk too long about some bits and repeat them too many times instead getting to the point. There is to much discription. I think yt watchers like gist. Try make it shorter and see how many more hits you will receive it and popularity you gain.
Wouldn't giving different advice be rather contradictory? The idea behind the series is to promote an approach to listening to a variety of media, so the advice remains consistent across videos. Granted, it might feel a little repetitive if you watch them back-to-back, but my hope is that you become familiar with the advice and then put it into practice when you're listening to other things. Does that make sense? In regards to using English, it is difficult to strike the right balance for everyone, so perhaps I should make some of these for more advanced learners entirely in French. That said, this video is more about teaching students how approach listening than specifically teaching French. In theory, you could apply the same methodology to listening in Spanish.

I can read a French book okay because I have time to translate. Listening (to conversations) is harder because there is less time to translate.
