Use to hang out there with my dad when he was the Assistant Division Superintendent of the Pocahontas Division at NS. Lots of great folks at the Portsmouth Yard, and Wheelersburg Terminal, Kenova Yard.
Portsmouth was a favorite location to go and photo trains way back when. The NW had a walk bridge over the tracks between the hump and the shops. The RR didn't mind us there, they never gave us any grief. The hump power was a C630 with a former train master slug. D&H power was common. In the early 1980s they were using T6s for yard power. Once I stopped by and a cincy train was getting it's power. NW red C30-7, UP SD40-2 and ATSF SD 40-2. 1980. Unusual to see a ATSF on NW then.
Back in the 50’s there was an 11 track crossing in Lima, Ohio, over the B&O yard tracks. It took a long time to cross but who cared? The show was awesome.
@@CCscott It is set to only activate just before a train gets there and the reason why the train was moving slow. You don't want it to activate in the yard at a long distance as the switching might not require crossing the road and there would be a lot of false activations otherwise. But I'd sure hate to be the signal maintainer that has to deal with that crossing if every track can trip the crossing gates.
@@gravelydon7072 Right, but you can't have gates that activate just before the train gets there when the crossing is 200ft wide. It takes seven seconds for a car to cross that at 20mph, so the gates need to close plenty more than 7s before the train gets there.
Hey Jawtooth! Thanks for sitting through the train assembly process. Years ago I used to go down and watch SP switch a big lumber and plywood mill near my house, it's interesting for awhile, but doesn't take long to get enough of it. Sorry to hear about your run ins with thieves. Unfortunately RR tracks are usually in the old, seedy, run down parts of towns so attract those people. Be careful out there. 👍👍👍
Cool video . I live close to Morehead KY. There use to be a lot of train action in my area when I was a kid years ago. We had 3 brick yards--Clay mines--Coal tempos--Loging Companies--Some of the stores here shipped by rail--and a Passenger train--and a 5 track crossing at Olive Hill KY and at Morehead KY--All of a sudden every thing dried up.. The Rail Road took up the tracks from Mount Sterling KY to Ashland KY. All most a 100 miles of track. I miss the trains that use to come through here
If you ever get a chance. Go to North Plate, Nebraska. The Bailey Yard is there. Near the west end of the yard is the Golden Spike Tower. It is eight stores tall. On the top level there are widows all the way around. And people there to answer any questions about what you are seeing. On the seventh floor is a open patio that faces the yard. At the bottom is a small gift shop. And there is a set of two tracks that are 700 feet long. And once a year they have five man handcar races. I don’t know when that is. The yard is six miles long and 300 tracks wide. And yes it is the largest yard in the US. 150 trains pass through the each day. No Amtrak comes through. The main track is three. Steven Sipes
Hobo's, if you are having an issue with hobo's what you need is a hobo repellent. I have seen a company that would supply you with the latest technology to repel Hobo's. It is called a Pit-bull, or you might want to try their German Sheppard offering. They are easy to maintain, just make sure they are loaded up with dog food and water and let them loose. The early warning barking feature is great for warning you when danger is near. I also like the serrated K9 weapons they carry in their mouths. Guaranteed to slice and dice. No Hobo would dare approach you, Also before i forget these units do get along with talking dogs if you have one of those.
If I had been fishing all day and headed home just to get stopped by this train I would be so mad that I would turn around and go back fishing. Right after I watched the train! lol!!! Thanks Mr. Jaw Tooth!
That's some crossing you found there Jawtooth -never going to be short of action here ! Things happen nice and sloooooow here -i get to see all the detaills! Love that ultra rusty grain hopper ! Nice one Jawtooth-another special you've brought us ! Regards
Oh, that blower clutch is on so many things that you are reminded of their locomotives when a blower in your heat or AC kicks on. It helped while I was toiling at whatever I was doing. Cool stuff, there, son!
Jaw Tooth, it was certainly worth the time taken to film this one. I've never seen a video where the the railroad workers were building a train with multiple mid-train DPUs in it.
Pretty cool video. Looked like they was making up a train. Cut in the DPU’s. Pick up the last cut of cars and they’re out o there. Held you up quite awhile. Thanks Jawtooth. 👍👍👍❤️
I remember this happened to me. This was so long ago, before the train underpass was built. The engineers had a heck of a time to let some of the box cars loose.....and took forever! Thankfully, not too long after that, the underpass was built.
I get to see both Norfolk Southern and CSX Transportation trains here in Princeton, Indiana at the Railroad Depot because each railroad has their own track that they run on.
Wow 54 minutes at the crossing! Good thing its not used much ( I think you said that before) and yes you have to be really careful wher eyoy go to railfan
It is literally used only to access a sliver of the river bank, and there is no other way to from the river - so heaven help you if a train derails while obstructing the crossing!
Wow! That's the slowest train I think you ever recorded! This feels like a begin at sunrise and end at sunrise, great background and detail, ten thumbs up thanks jaw tooth!!
Very, very unlikely. Literally the only thing on the other side of the crossing is a parking lot and some walking trails by the river. And, with how slow the trains are moving, they'd surely stop for an ambulance.
I remember taking a trip with my family when I was about 7 or 8. We came to a crossing that said "13 tracks." We made a lot of "wooooaaaahhh!" noises as we crossed. Then he hit one last track. "Fourteen!" we cried.
You have to love a yard - you know there are always consists being created so - back and forth and then again :) Fun for railfans - not so much for regular drivers :)
I have sat for over an hour at a 13 track crossing in West Chicago. This is on a major roadway with industry on both sides of the crossing. One set is 7 tracks for UP with a switching yard and then a 6 track for CN. I've caught a lot of trains here.
I was there yesterday. You can go out the other end by driving alongside the flood wall on the river side. A few mudholes to get your car dirty but nothing to get stuck in.
Hey! Let's drive up on a ten track crossing and talk with the railroad employee. I mean, what could possibly go wrong. I say this as one who was riding the head end when we smashed into a couple of vehicles at different times during my career. With respect to rail yards and/or tracks running through towns and cities, when they were constructed, it was a better class of neighborhoods in those long ago days. Now what I see in my neck of the woods around the BNSF yard and former Katy depot are places you don't want to be. Same went for Englewood Yard back in the day. The Hardy Street Yard where we picked up our power/caboose and the run to and from Englewood was located in Houston's 5th ward.
Close to my stompin grounds as far as train watching(Chillicothe), back in the day N&W portsmouth yards were massive, with 2 footbridges you could walk on over the yards
Yes very cool crossing. I’m so sorry to hear that you have been a victim. Please be careful out there. Yes bring your dogs!! God bless merry Christmas Happy new year !!!
This is the slowest train I've ever seen. I really think their engine to freight ratio needs an upgrade. Just had an update from legacy.com, your there is more has past away this year. Keep his memories going forward.
Brian thanks for the videos over this year,I've learnt so much about the US railways thanks to you. Wishing you and the family a Happy Christmas and New Year. John from the UK
Brian, sorry to hear you have been robbed and had your vehicle broken into in the past. I used to be a juvenile correctional officer that served that area and yes, it’s not the best area. Be safe!
My goodness, those barriers leave it until the very last moment don't they. Someone could easily have started to cross quite legitimately with the barriers still up, and a train actually on the crossing (though you'd have to be pretty stupid not to notice a great big train, but a lot of people are)
WOW! Jaw Tooth you need to get yourself a 45. The video was great. I see a videos you do with the local own railroad with old locomotive is that near your home Here in garden City Kansas we have a local railroad. I think its good for towns to have there own railroads.

Sorry for being late, boss, but I was held up at a ten-track crossing; and it's not my fault for being a rail fan.

Great video mr. Tooth follow you next video brother.

12:45 lol at anyone waiting on the other side. Just when they think the train's finally going to clear the crossing : it goes back again! 🤣

looks like precision scheduled railroading in progress! as much as i love PSR DPU helpers, it means less trains so i’m torn

Ohio Government Vehicle as was the white vehicle. Likely some kind of inspectors for the State. Red lettered white plates.

adding a couple DPU, all right!!!
Only a train fan would love being stuck at a RXR crossing for nearly an hour. The question is, will your wife believe it? 👍😄

10 track crossing, don't get any better, waiting for 11.
