I just saw the date. Man I saw many incidents on Southside over the years. I used to do the yearly tank inspections on top of building the new repairing the old. I know everyone on that road. Lol
Go to my UA-cam channel I have 2. Jae Dean 1 and my mworx1 channel. You will see some of the tanks under construction. My kids playing in some of the vids. But they were from around 2009 2010
I'm a remote control operator for BNSF. Spotting industries is not hard at all. There are two on a remote job. So sometimes there is still a guy or gal up on the engine to watch the point. If you are switching in a yard most have remote zones that you can activate and only you can use them for your movement without having to watch. We have strict rules for remote control ops. We can't just turn on the box and start pulling and shoving cars.
Just an accident waiting to happen which was illustrated a little over a week later when a CSX remote unit derailed in Cincinnati near Gest St. The railroads are trying to save money by using remote control units but in the long run it cost them dearly when accidents happen.
They had those dam remotes when I worked at the steel mill. One place was in the slab yard. It had tracks everywhere and we had to drive around the yard. It was flat like one big crossing. You'd see a train moving, see the engine, and have no idea where the operator was and if he saw you or not. Scared the shit out of me. More accidents looking for a place to happen because they didn't want to pay engineer rate. After a while they'd just ride the engine on the walkway, in all weather. got to save that buck. Stupid idea and I haven't touched on when the controls would mal-function or have interference
In the 1990s I lived in that neighborhood you see at 14:46. I lived like a block and a half from that church, and worked nights at the Speedway you see behind you at the start of the video (though it was called 'SuperAmerica' at the time. This was before they widened and streamlined US50 (between the tracks and that neighborhood). You keep wandering around my old stomping grounds. I also used to live in a neighborhood in Williamsburg 2006-2012; you filmed a train at a crossing only a block or so from where I lived. I live in Toledo now, and you'd love all the railroad activity up here. The Chrysler Jeep plant keeps the railroads busy, for sure.
I like that CSX EMD, the dome cars, and that caboose. Together they make a very cool short train. The mountains make this video awesome as well. I would love to have that caboose! The blue, gray, and yellow are so nicely painted on it. Great job filming this video! I hope you will get more caboose cars, mountains, and snow. They really make these videos worth watching Jaw Tooth!
It looks like model railroading on a 1:1 scale. Since the onset of DCC control systems, model railroaders have become quite adept at operating locomotives by remote control, often wirelessly.
cool beans Brian, you get nominee for best catch of a caboose(shoving platform) on a facist CSX lol, remember to thank God, your Wife family and Chessie for getting you here and again the little people you had to push down to get your award. Remember to exit stage right and dont fall, LOL. thanks again for the awesome. Thanks B :-)
It must be he color scaring off the artists. I from Cleveland Oh.'s west side, there has been a caboose parked on a siding for about 2 weeks and it still hasn't been taged yet.
They're incredibly dangerous to use because the connection between the remote and the control system in the locomotive can disable at any time which could lead to a runaway train.
I'm sure that the remote and the locomotive are constantly sending signals to each other every second and if either one loses the single I'm sure the train goes into breaking
An identical caboose (except for the condition being much worse -- very rusty) has been sitting for years on a siding in Winchester, Virginia near 437 N. Cameron Street (address of a local shelter for homeless men -- the Winchester Rescue Mission), just south of the old freight station (across the street from WRM) that was until a couple years ago the home for the Winchester Model Railroad Club. 🚂
Amazingly-astonishing and captivating with its extraordinary beauty, the film reflects the full charm of the maneuvering works. This time - in winter scenery. Nature is a good addition to railway. Very pritty vidio Mr. Tooth. Greetings from Poland.
That work would have Ben done in half the time if it was a 2 man crew. UP got rid of their remote units and unpopular gensets several years ago in Milwaukee. CP used to have a caboose for the Jones Island job but it burned up. Brakeman now suffers thru a 2+ mile push hanging on the first car in all types of weather. Thanks for showing us the flip side.
Remote control is good and great and something we will see more of, next to automatic systems. But the only way I think a remote controlled train can be relay safe, is if they equip the train with cameras, both fixed cameras and cameras that can be moved manually in position (magnet) and using VR-googles or similar. First then you can get got safety control with remote control. With VR you can get 360 overview. Something we have been testing out the last couple of years on Norwegian tanks.
Great video. The 4K was really good. Excellent clarity, and the stabilization was not bad at all. I have to agree with the comments about the risks involved in using remote packs. CSX will pay a huge price in the event there is an accident or worse on the far end of the locomotive where the operator in unable to see what is going on.
Superb detail with the 4k camera Jawtooth -youve got this off to a fine art nowadays . If modelling info is what you need -your in the right place .When you have no extra hands to watch both sides of the road is when remote control comes into play ! Controversial or otherwise - it works ! Bottom valve was open on 1 car too Regards
Remote control trains, man I must be getting old, never saw that back in my day... amazing !! Great video, the last shot from the bridge was cool, good overall view of the area they were switching... LOVE that Geep revving !! Woooooooo !!
Some of that stuff was still around after the 1950s. I remember my mother drinking Sanka in the late '70s and early '80s. I think I saw a few "Leave it to Beaver" reruns in the early '70s (I was born in 1962) or decades later on cable. 🤔
Thank you so much for this fascinating and most interesting video, I think switching is a very interesting part of railroading, the remote control locomotive and the caboose are of great interest. Thank you for bringing this to the people.
@@JawTooth Hi JT, yes I watched that video but didn’t realise at the time that it involved remote control working. Now I notice that you mentioned it in the title. I must pay more attention lol.
Great video Jawtooth! Picture looks good! I bet using that remote feels like operating a model railroad in lifesize scale! Thanks for sharing! I have some pictures of 6517 in Bowling Green Ky.
Here is some advice from the begging. Okay so for the video, 4K is better than 1080, but it takes up more storage. So be careful about it. I usually do 1080p 60. 60 at the end is the refresh rate, Which is why it's smoother. Anyway, Great video and hope you stay safe! Love from Michigan.
It would be interesting if you could show HOW the remote units work - what the caboose (in the UK we'd call it a brake van) has to do with anything, and I presume in the event of a 'lost contact' the train brakes would fail safe and stop the thing.
Hey jaw tooth I live in Lebanon Tennessee where the music City start starts it's journey every morning. Hey I heard a passenger train horn is louder than a freight train horn? Is that true I know by hearing the music City starr I believe it's true I enjoy watching your videos because I'm amazed with trains just like big jet planes I saw a tractor trailer truck going down the interstate one night it had a train engine on it I said no wonder they can pull so much I'm a retired truck driver I've been all over the country
JT I will differ with you here. Remote control is not cool!!! It is dangerous and due to so many derailments from side swiping they have stopped using it in most areas on the division I worked on. I got several pictures shortly after RC switching started, at one of our bigger yards on my division with an engine laying on its side.
Wow, I didn't know they had so much trouble with it! The railroad near my house tried it for a few months and then gave up because they had problems with it but I never knew what the problems were

"Remote control, jetpacks, and a caboose. Don't see that every day. Not everywhere anyway." Jawtooth is the king! Cracked me up!
Love the old school crossings with no flashing lights, just a cross because it's understood that the train isn't going above 5mph
Using a remote inside a business still looks like an accident waiting to happen. Great video though! Thanks!

Great Video, thx, especially the noisy scratches from the tank wagons, have to make a song out of that. Greets from Germany.
Thanks Jupp!
Watch the the cool wheel slip control @ 5:30. I like how the wheels kinda stutter and ratchets trying to grip the rail. Nice video angle JT!
Always enjoy watching. Peace
Stuck the tail end into the plant opposite to that CREMER factory and it grew by several cars.
Remote Controlled trains are just big train sets.
I don't understand the reason for remote control operation here. You still had a 2-man crew. What is the benefit of it?
My thoughts exactly!
There is still an engineer. The train movement has the locomotive cab occupied as normal until they arrive at the industry to switch.
GREAT video. Thanks so much. Always fascinating to watch such enormous pieces of equipment work their jobs.

Did anyone notice the tank car at the 10:37 mark was draining something from an opened valve
Tank car for commodity that has to be heated to flow. That's almost certainly condensation (water) from the steam lines in the car used to heat it.
Perhaps, but why only one from all those tank cars with open draincock?
I thought the video was good. Seems like your 4k is working great. Thank you for your wonderful videos.
