    At some point in your land's history, someone truly loved it. The system of terraces & canals demonstrate that love. What a gift for you two to discover.

    Wow! Your land gets more and more beautiful the more it is cleared. Such wonderful rock formations and an unbelievable amount of hard work all those years ago to create those Lavada's. Well done Luke and Sarah! I hope Peppa gets the hint to stay in the goat barn!

    In Belgium, we mostly eat asparagus white. It is a true delicacy! You make a mount of soil at the base of the plants, so the shoots grow under the soil. You then dig them out when they are ready. Due to the lack of light, they don’t turn green, and stay white and soft. You eat them with a white sause, or a lemon sause or make creamy soup of them.

    Those piglets are growing so fast, and cute. Sarah your asparagus looks so good. Luke is doing a great job of clearing the land and making it look more open. Hope Pepa has her babies in the new place where they will all be safe. Rupert tickles me being on her back and walking down her face to get on to the ground. He will miss being around her when she has her babies. Clearing you land has all kinds of great surprises. Thank you both so much for sharing these videos. Love your videos.

    Luke, have you considered building one or more ram pumps (google them, dead cheap made from plumbing parts and no power needed) within your canals to divert water where it is needed, either for immediate use when the canals are running or to fill an old bath-tub or small pond for use when the canals dry up in the summer?

    Beginning at At 6:50 - where does that water go?
    You need a nice long handle pitchfork with 4 or 5 tines for picking up brush to put on the fire. Much less bending at the waist.
    At 6:57 one - You have many Holm oaks that are growing in clusters. You will want to start culling the duplicate stems this coming winter, Prune one duplicate stem a year until you are left with only one - best of the best on ~ 7 meter centers.
    At 26:34 it appears you can harvest 4 to 8 nice garden stakes from the willow clumps one a year. Use the pollard or coppice method. This is also a great location to harvest "live stakes" to plant in other damp spots on the property. You will always have a supply of nice straight garden trellis/lattice/stakes available.

      Thanks Steve again with very helpful tips😁The water from the canals goes into the river , we do have plans for the water ..many plans🤣 but we also are super busy in many areas so everything will done eventually once we are ready and have sufficient funds to tackle them😁❤️

      @@lukeandsarahsoffgridlife Thank you for the reply! I did not realize you have a river on or near the property. That is really great! So you have access to water that you can pump to irrigate the top of your land with your 4 GEL batteries+ as time and money allows. That's WONDERFUL! What a tremendous resource!

    Hi Luke and Sarah,
    When I heard the name of your farm I thought of the old Burl Ives song The big rock candy mountain. Have a look on UA-cam, maybe you could get your singer/musician friend to record it and use it as your theme tune.

    And random question to those also living in Portugal: how's the situation with fireworks in you area? Here in the Minho it has started again: salvos of fireworks, several times a day - from early morning until late at night. It probably is organised as it's always the same sequence. We'll be moving to Estremoz in May and I hope there are less fireworks happy there. And funny thing: our animals (cats and horses) don't even flinch. It's us (non-portuguese) humans being annoyed by it.

    As someone who's moving to Portugal to own land I have looked at the fire regulations and registration but I've seen and heard of rules of grass being below 200mm and land cleared by a set date. How do these rules effect you when you haven't been able to clear the land until now. Also once it's cleared do you have to then keep it cleared in future years.

    • @lukeandsarahsoffgridlife
      @lukeandsarahsoffgridlife  3 місяці тому +1

      You don't have to clear all of your land. 50metres around your house and 50 metres away from the border if your neighbour has a house within 50 metres of the border and also I think 20 metres(might be 50) if your border touches a sealed road. Our land was cleared around where we were living the first year. There are big fines if you don't do it.
