A lot of monarchs, particularly the males, spend some time in the military. It's a historical tradition. I don't think they see each other like that at all. Deprecating humour is part of our culture, and outsiders seem to have trouble understanding that we say a lot of things we don't mean.

The UK is always there helping other countries giving BILLIONS of our money, manpower, you always get people here saying we should not be there, etc etc, if our help is not wanted then its all or nothing. Of course we all know the story of George VI ascending to the throne after the abdication of Edward VIII. But you might not know their father George V also had an older brother named Prince Albert Victor who died of pneumonia in the 1890's leaving the future George V third in line (after his father, the future Edward VII and his grandmother Queen Victoria).
