Thanks for sharing. It sounds like Wilt was like Jordan without the Bulls. Wilt needed a better team around him to become the greatest ever winning the most championships.
This reminds me of when people used to argue over who was better between Barry Sanders and Emmitt Smith. Emmitt can't touch Barry in terms of skill, not even close, but Emmit had a Hall of Fame quarterback (Troy Aikman), Hall of Fame receiver (Michael Irvin), and Pro Bowl bound offensive lineman. I would simply not know how else to describe these two. Bill Russell and Wilt Chamberlain were both ferocious on both ends of the court. They dominated with their height and their abilities to defend and score at anytime. They were so agile and strong that many other teams they played against were left helpless. These two sold a lot of tickets at ballgames and that's also what made them both so special. You've had legends after them, but the real surprise was that they've met each other in the finals and knew what they were both up against: each other. However, the Celtic's teams of those days had many great players around Bill Russell. The 76rs had Wilt to practically carry that team, then when the Lakers had Wilt, they also had a few other great players too as well, but the focus was on these two greats to compete against each other. This is why they always filled arenas. By the way, great job on the color re-creation here.

Amazing video! Love the quality of the restoration. A few things I notice: Wilt and Russel would be able to hold their own against modern day NBA centers: both had amazing shot-blocking, as well as motor and athleticism. Also, Sam Jones is an almost automatic scorer.
I hate how people dismiss this era as "a bunch of plumbers and milkmen". Like sure the talent and skill has grown since then, but you know what these were the best people that could play the sport at the time bar none.
Right and we always look back on players and judge them with the knowledge we have from today. But none of that information was available at the time. That's why it's hard to compare players if different eras. You can't put them on the same playing field with so many different variables from their own eras. We should just enjoy what they did and remember that everything they did contributed to what we have today.
This actually not true, some of the best of this time were still playing in the neighborhoods. They had some boys that were skilled with that ball that would of made this era very entertaining, they were just born a little too early.
I’m from the 80s and it’s one thing my generation does that I never agreed with. We compare these players to the new players. We compare different eras and you can’t do that. The kids today are damn near cyborgs compared to the competition Jordan had, Damn near any player today will be elite in the 80s, it’s time we only compare people in each era cause it’s not fare to the these legends at all.
For real, he did a fantastic job on this. It’s amazing how this footage from the 60’s looks better than most games from the 90’s-2000’s do today. I hope somebody eventually takes the time to restore some of those games, at least the instant classics, the finals and championship games.
Wilt was one of the greatest athletes of the 20th century. As he once said, Russell didn’t beat him, Russell’s team beat Wilt’s team. Statistically he was the greatest basketball player of all time. It’s a shame that younger fans think Wilt was only dominant because he played against short white guys.

My grandfather worked on Wilt’s car back in the 60’s. My Pop worked at a Volkswagen dealer, and Wilt drove a Volkswagen Beetle, no lie lol. Apparently Pop had to take the back seat out, and mount the front seats in the back, so Wilt had room for his giant ass legs lmao. My Pop said he was a goddamn giant in person, but as nice a guy as you’d ever want to meet, and he tipped him for the work, and signed some stuff for some of the other guys. I always loved that story. Just the thought of Wilt climbing in and out of a VW beetle everyday is hilarious to me for some reason.
The way these dudes played ball is the definition of « teamwork », not selfish play or not just one guy who carry the whole team like modern basketball.
Great footage of both Russell and Wilt in their primes. Also gives a good visual for anyone trying to compare the players of yesterday with the skills of players today.
Super clear footage that only further reinforces the mastery of both Wilt and Bill. If you have neither in your top 10 you do not know basketball. +1 sub
They are easily top 2 ever n guys like MJ and Kobe are so great cuz unlike most their fans, they understood and studied so closely the goathood of them and players of their era
No painted key, just markers for where to stand for FTs. It's wild seeing so many players clogging what today is the paint - since they didn't have to respect a 3-point shot. Also, these guys look more athletic than I was led to believe.
Watching this makes me understand why the pace back then was similar to today's game because they're doing a lot of the same things, quick offense, fast breaks, pull up jumpers, and deep shots coming off screens. I won't lie the plumbers narrative and memes shaped my perception of the game back then like in reality they were not the cleanest ball handlers but they were still athletic and fast.
There were many strict rules back then. You were only allowed to dribble the top of the ball. Makes everything more stiff and less fluid. I get amazed when I hear that these guys supposedly couldn't dribble with their weak hand. I can dribble with my opposite and I'm not skillful. Skill is overated anyway.
a pleasure to watch. So clean and beautiful. No half-hour iso dribbling, no open lanes, no three point baskets from half court. Just trying to score as fast as possible by using their athleticism and their brains. And great defense. Maybe the three point line IS the problem.
@Los_Jefe oh I agree, and yes I'm aware I've been watching basketball for several years, domestic games as well as those abroad. Thank you for the correspondence! You is your pick for the finals, May I ask? I'm referring to NBA in that last context, my apologies
Russell seemed to have no answer for that shot off the glass from Wilt. Russell looks limited offensively but his speed and timing on defense and rebounding is incredible. Wilt looked like he could block anything.
Nobody had an answer for it. Wilt was the original shooter of the fadeaway at the center position and got a lot of his points off of it. People tried to claim he started shooting it because of Russell, but there's video of him shooting the fallaway in college. It was an almost unstoppable shot. The Wilt Chamberlain Archive UA-cam channel has a great video on it.
@@fieryjalapenos4442 Sounds like an excuse. He was competitive as hell. No one that competitive ever takes it easy. Though maybe at times he did feel that way to some degree. He was so much bigger and stronger than everyone, especially back then.
This is great. These are the trailblazers and get full respect. That being said, it's just so interesting to see how much the game has evolved with far superior spacing and ball movement. There is little offfball actions that the game looks stiff. Also, people were smoking INSIDE the building!
Wilt was a stat god in his prime, and he would dominate in any era of basketball. The only reason he didn’t have more championships was because of Bill. He was the oil in the Celtics engine, and he was THE best at doing all the little things to help the team when he wasn’t scoring himself. The definition of an ultimate team player
I read wilts book a while back and he had said that any true 7foot center could score 30-40. points a game if the team passed the ball to him..but than nobody would want to watch it since it would be boring. Hence the bird magic Jordan era run and gun style of play since it was more fun to watch
I’ve heard something similar in regard to the post game when The Warriors made shooting 3’s valuable. That the post game is just ineffective and a ball stopper for most offenses because everyone is just standing and watching the big guy battle for 2. It’s hypocritical in one aspect, because that’s literally what James Harden’s game was in Houston. He played constant 1v1’s with shooters just standing around him and he was praised. Even other teams started copying that.
Bill Russell Sam Jones and John Havlicek just knew how to win close games. Every stats is shouting that fact but still so many people dont get it. It might be the most amazing thing in basketball ever. Havlicek won two rings in seventies as well.
This is basketball imo. LIke watching a chess match between two titans. Like a war of attrition. Now you don't see the same defense being played or the same will to win the game. It's more about who can score the most points which it's always been but the Celtics would not only outscore opponents but create enough havoc to keep their opponents score lower. These players were still great athletes. Even if you look at olympic records players have gotten a split second faster or can jump higher but world class athletes have always been on another plateue. As far as the event too. These players were tough as nails as far as their mindsets some of them. Whether it was the old working class or the military or slavery. You had people who were conditioned differently. The game is more spread out now. Built from the inside out. It's now more designed to promote more scoring. Players are seen as more skilled but even that is debateable imo. I willl say the talent level now is as good as its been in a long time. There has been an influx of a lot of young talent the last decade or so. How the game is played is literally backwards though but getting back to it in ways. From a purest form, The 60's was basketball at it's purest imo. The 80's was really the golden age and probably the best combination of talent and quality of play. The 90's was predicated on interior scoring and was the Michael Jordan era and predicated on the individual. the 21st century has been a mess imo and they completely removed the interior portion of the game. It's not even about basketball sometimes its about something else entirely and $$$$ and marketing.
I’m going to touch more of the mere fact that the rules were called way differently back then compared to today. I’ve already been through the comments firing back at bad/good takes of “These eras sucked” or “Nothings changed” or even of an 81 year old sharing his first hand experience so I will conclude that it’s almost too hard to compare Wilt and Russel on surface level aspects because they seemingly had different goals. I do want to touch on how they called fouls and violations though because it seems way different back then but like ACTUALLY AUTHENTIC to what I think Basketball is and everyone else. Yes you are gonna get super star calls but today i feel like its inflated to the max, and even with missed travel calls. What i am trying to say is the game needs 1 extra Ref to be properly observed. We are in a world where everyone wants to be involved too so whats the issue with an extra ref? It would crack down on horrible missed calls, bad calls but also just give a lot more awareness for a seemingly such a new and spontaneous game. Back then it was TOTALLY way more simple and up pace and everything but its because there were way less elements to the game. Less moves invented, less possible shots or combos, strategies, even first hand experience and inspiration seemed to have moved slowly across the nation. So to that point of it being completely expanded, why not add an extra brian to interpret and understand it all as it happens live. I really appreciate this footage though i have shared it like crazy!!!!!!!!! 🎉
Dawg watching him go from just chilling watching the floor to making the right defensive read and pouncing like a panther before the ball was shot… Mr. Chamberlain was a dog, straight off the chain. 27 rebounds avg in the Finals is Titanic 🥶 RIP “Big Dipper” ✨🌟✨
12:43 is genuinely great defense on that post-up. Stands his ground to prevent a bully move or spin, puts his hands up to defend the shot, and there was good help defense. That was just a great shot.
@@valto5477 tell that to Dirk who is going in the Hall because he could consistently hit that shot without a 5 time MVP guarding him and a double team.
Story of how Bill Russell's family came to California during The Great Migration is in the book The Warmth of Other Suns. He would have never been permitted to play college ball in the South back in the day.
His father got his family out of the South. Then he looked after Bill properly well after his wife died while working a tough job. No wonder Bill has so much respect for him.
Also you guys have to keep in mind that in order to restore and upgrade old footage, it becomes slowed down by about 10-15%...if you notice the ball sometimes seems to float unaturaly when bouncing...

Pretty easy to play consistent defense when everyone barely moves 😂😂 I’m not trying to diss these guys, they were obviously the best of the best in their era! If you didn’t see any travels you really don’t care to open your eyes or use your brain. So many damn travels and could only dribble with one hand. Yall are ridiculous.

@shadow81in I'm going to address the fallacy of how "Bill" shut down Wilt 8 out of 8 series using Wilt's ppg for a season. Wilt always had less ppg and more rpg vs the Celtics. RS and playoffs. Anyway, here is a list, by year, of Wilt's ppg in the playoffs against what he averaged in the RS against the Celtics. Not the rest of the league.. I'm not including 1960 and 1962 because those were anomalous for various reasons, which I am willing to discuss in other posts. 1964: Wilt averaged 29.1 ppg in the playoffs and 29.1 ppg in RS. (29/27) 1965: Wilt averaged 30.1 ppg in the playoffs and 25.4 in the RS. (30/31) 1966: Wilt averaged 28.0 ppg in the playoffs and 28.3 ppg in the RS. (28/30) 1967: Wilt averaged 21.6 ppg in the playoffs and 20.6 ppg in the RS. (22/32/10/10) 1968: Wilt averaged 22.1 ppg in the playoffs and 17.1 in the RS. (22/25/7)
@shadow81in Bill joined the team half way through the season and they were already in first place. They had the best back court in the league(Cousy and Sharmin were already ALL NBA). Heinsohn won Rookie of the Year and Cousy won MVP. The next season, Sam Jones joined team and played 12 years with Bill, retiring at the same time. Cousy was the Team Captain for the first 6 rings, handing it over to Bill after he retired. Cousy made ALL NBA 12 times in 13 years(10 times First Team and was never lower than eigth place in MVP voting for his career). With no free agency, the team stayed together for their whole careers, replacing plaers as needed. Like Havlicke coming off the bench for his first 7 years. Must be nice. On top of that, the Celtics employed an illegal zone defense and enforcers against Wilt. Which is why in the 1960's playoffs, Wilt had to leave a game after bruising his hand trading punches with Heinsohn. Then in the 1964 Finals, Wilt knocked Lovelette senseless after Auerbach sicced him on Wilt. "stand in Chamberlain’s way whenever the Warriors scored, thereby preventing Chamberlain from getting back to defend his basket while Russell rushed down to take an open shot." This is what Auerbach would have his players do. Heinsohn was doing this in the 1960's playoffs and Wilt took some swings at Heinsohn cause no fouls were being called. He actually injured his hand and only scored 12 points in this game. So, a lot of credit is given to Bill when it was the team and Auerbach's deviousness.
@@oldeskoolnewsreels9927And, most importantly, Wilt lost and the Celtics won. I’m sure he would have traded all those stats for the rings that Russ and the Celtics got!
@@FjskNdnd True, except for the fact that his teams lost. He didn't lose just like Bill didn't win, the Celtics did. I'm sure he would have traded them for more rings, but he was told to play that way by his owner and coach when he was on the Philly Warriors. Even though he only won two rings, which is a team accomplishment, Wilt was the only player on both the 1967 Sixers and the 1972 Lakers. Both teams are Top 4 teams for wins in a season AND winning the championship. The Lakers also won 33 games in a row starting the day Wilt took over as Team Captain. It’s crazy how good this looks
The all star game has so many legends on the same court. It’s phenomenal to see Oscar Robertson, Bill, Wilt, Jerry West and more all playing together
I hate how people dismiss this era as "a bunch of plumbers and milkmen". Like sure the talent and skill has grown since then, but you know what these were the best people that could play the sport at the time bar none.
It was the modern era when they were playing.
I was 8 years old little boy when our Milk Man Mike died....I cried my eyes out
This actually not true, some of the best of this time were still playing in the neighborhoods.

18:50 that might be the most legendary dunk ever imo. Up there with Pippen dunking on Ewing
a pleasure to watch. So clean and beautiful. No half-hour iso dribbling, no open lanes, no three point baskets from half court. Just trying to score as fast as possible by using their athleticism and their brains. And great defense. Maybe the three point line IS the problem.
Overuse of the 3 is a problem.
Indeed, I've been saying that for years myself

Russell seemed to have no answer for that shot off the glass from Wilt. Russell looks limited offensively but his speed and timing on defense and rebounding is incredible. Wilt looked like he could block anything.
Nobody had an answer for it. Wilt was the original shooter of the fadeaway at the center position and got a lot of his points off of it. People tried to claim he started shooting it because of Russell, but there's video of him shooting the fallaway in college. It was an almost unstoppable shot. The Wilt Chamberlain Archive UA-cam channel has a great video on it.

When I see this footage they look too lanky to me. I’m shorter but very strong and I’d just bully them out of the only space they are effective in.
Bill Russell Sam Jones and John Havlicek just knew how to win close games. Every stats is shouting that fact but still so many people dont get it. It might be the most amazing thing in basketball ever. Havlicek won two rings in seventies as well.
Awesome job on this

That basket at 6:02 is unstoppable even in today's league. I don't see anyone shot blocking that.
Russell, Wilt, and Sam Jones could’ve played in any era
Guys that "fallaway jumper" cannot be stopped...
Really appreciate the comment and you sharing the video around 🙏🙏

1965: Wilt averaged 30.1 ppg in the playoffs and 25.4 in the RS. (30/31)

1967: Wilt averaged 21.6 ppg in the playoffs and 20.6 ppg in the RS. (22/32/10/10)
1968: Wilt averaged 22.1 ppg in the playoffs and 17.1 in the RS.
