    FLIGHT CHOPS DISCLAIMER:
    I am a "weekend warrior" private pilot, I fly for fun with no intentions of going commercial. I have had my PPL for over 15 years, but still consider each flight a learning experience - I generally take detailed notes after each flight to remind myself what went well or what I could do to improve.... Having the GoPro cameras to record flights like this is invaluable. I find these self analysis videos very helpful in my constant quest to improve, and am happy to share. Feedback is invited; however, please keep it positive.

    This one brought back memories. Back in 1980, I took my dad for a Vancouver flight in a Piper Archer. We departed from Vancouver Intl., flew to Point Grey (i.e., U.B.C.), then transited the harbour zone and flew past Simon Frasier University to "Pitt Meadows, and then headed back to YVR via Burnaby. My dad trained in fly Tiger Moths and Avro Ansons near the end of the war, so it was an extra special flight with extra special scenery.

    Have to agree. ATC folks are awesome here in Canada and good to us VFR guys. Even when I burble my way through a request they are patient and understanding. Your low and over at YVR was phenomenal - what a treat! John and I got one at Hamilton in his TB20 a couple of weeks back - not quite as cool, but man are those big airport runways ever long! So to any Nav Canada guys who see this - Thank you!

      Controllers are human too and usually the bark is worse than the bite. Just relax, communicate clearly and be ok with needing to change your plan. Truth be told, while we got the low approach at YVR we also had to orbit for 10min to wait for a hole in the traffic. Steve's daughter almost got sick from the circling, so every request has its potential cost and downside. ;)

    This has got to be one of the best Flight Chops videos to date. The production quality was excellent. Content was very informative. The chance to see some of the beautiful Canadian scenery in a very unique aircraft and get a low and over of YVR 08R. I had a chance to fly in FBH w/ RVH and it was one of those eye-opening aviation experiences that make you say to yourself, "I can't believe I'm doing this right now!"

    • @FlightChops
      @FlightChops  7 років тому +1

      Right on thanks! And regarding the monetization; I turned it on in Jan 2017 for the first time after ~4 years, simple because I was told the algorithm favored monetized videos. I didn't expect my niche numbers to generate much ad revenue, and never liked the idea of making views sit through ads - anyway - after a couple months I can confirm the money is crap - it's been about $1 / 1000 views... so yeah, unless getting millions of views, Ad rev is not worth it. Still waiting to see if there is a significant change in the algorithm sharing - Ive been told it can take 3 months for the meta data to trickle down and start rewarding the monetized videos with being suggested more often...

    Great video! I know for some that the communications can be difficult. When I first started flying, the communications were a little confusing; for obvious reasons like, it sounds so complicated. But when you boil it down, all it is; who you are, where you're at, and what you want or what you are doing. Keep it short, keep it sweet...no small talk. I think I was more concerned about sounding ridiculous, like the new guy that I was, lol. Once I got over that, my communications got MUCH MUCH better. I wonder if ATC is giggling at some of my landings...haha!

    Such a nice video showing the two girls enjoying the flying and not being scared and fussy. Lucky you that the pilot didn't take you in the air during a rough day, maybe he picked the afternoon when the air is smooth. I know the tower on the top of the Pan Pacific hotel, I have done some work up there. Fly safe, experiment, improve, but I would inspect the ELT and carry a satellite tracker on every flight, a suggestion from an Air Search and Rescue team member

    • @pacificcoastpilot
      @pacificcoastpilot 7 років тому +8

      Experimental / Homebuilt Aircraft can utilize avionics and components that are not "certified" which are a lot less expensive also the owner/pilot can to all the installation themselves. Factory built aircraft require certified parts and a licensed mechanic to complete the installation.

    I never knew there was a Tower up there! I'll have to put it on my bucket list to schedule a tour and watch ATC from the Canadian side. I've been controlling since 1994 and I have family that I visit in Surrey and Vancouver quite often.

      Thanks man! Have we talked since Norm died? I am constantly inspired by his positive energy - he was my first flying mentor thanks to your BBS, and I'll always dedicate what I am doing to his memory.

      We talked just afterward! Every time I hear his name I can see him like he's right next to me. I miss everyone from those days :D You seriously need to take me up. Get a move on!! ;-)

    @FlightChops I FINALLY got to understand how the mics work better because of your little girl. I have always wondered about what duplex the headsets worked in and now I know. Thank her for me. :) I have never flown a plane but it has always been a dream. Love your channel.

    Awesome vid! Really enjoyed it. Last night I flew from Brampton to Toronto, ATC were patient with as I'm terrible on the radio a lot of pausing:(. The ease in which Ryan spoke was enviable but I will learn from him and definitely be more determined to not limit my flying adventures cause I don't want to speak to atc. Thanks Mr Chop's and great plane Ryan.

    I was really hoping that the controller would say something like "use caution wake turbulence" with that line up and wait call to the a380.

    Great evening's flying !! It's a great message to get out too. I think many pilot's limit their adventures because of their apprehension in dealing with ATC. Phraseology is important but if you're clear and succinct most controllers can often help with plain English request......... clever use of the tablet in the end.....I see what you're doin....brainwashing them into the cockpit using cartoons LOL

    Your videos have sparked my childhood dream, thank you! I have always wanted to fly but never taken the steps. After watching many of your videos I have decided I have to give the private pilot license a go. Keep up the awesome content!

      I have, thank you for the extra push. I have only logged 2 hours but I'm trying to fly weekly just getting scheduling conflicts with my instructor.
