20,000 Leagues Under The Sea (1954) Movie Review: The Salty Nerds dive into this classic story based on the novel by Jules Verne and produced by the legendary Walt Disney. Starring Kirk Douglas and James Mason, this "retro" movie takes you on an underwater adventure that actually heavily inspired the Pirates of the Caribbean films, oddly enough.
What is your 20,000 Leagues Under The Sea review? Did you love it? Hate it? What are your thoughts on giant squids? Let us know in the comments!

The four of you have great chemistry and keep me laughing when I need it. Keep up the great work.
The Nautilus and Captain Nemo returned in the 1961 version of Mysterious Island. They used the same sets of the Nautilus and killed Nemo again.

20,000 Leagues is a fantastic movie that was among Disney’s first moves into live action features. Though “family-friendly” with Douglas often being comic relief, the ultimate theme is adult-oriented and has the pace of an adult mid-1950s drama, not a kiddie comedy.
Similar to Snow White released nearly 20 years earlier, Walt borrowed and mortgaged everything to produce the movie. Its great financial success helped build Disneyland.
A big credit goes to Disney legend Art Director Harper Goff who designed the Nautilus boat, sets, and equipment. He created the steampunk aesthetic we know today. He also helped design portions of Disneyland and was the art director for Gene Wilder’s Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.
Special effects specialist Bob Mattey, who was responsible for the giant squid, came out of retirement in 1974 on request of Spielberg to create Bruce, Jaws’ mechanical shark.
20,000 Leagues is an example of golden era Disney: it was a passion project that Walt was willing to give up everything for. Today, Disney movies are shit out from a conveyor belt as “content.”

Same here. Always like 20,000 Leagues. It is in there with the other Disney movies like The Black Hole or Apple Dumpling Gang or the young Kirk Russell movies that are just a fun watch. Need a 4K scan and release of this movie on disc.

I was forced to watch this in grade school so I got bored by it. I really liked this though when it was called Black Hole. Nightmare-inducing ending…
The Spy Who Loved Me is the Bond flick. Best Roger Moore Bond flick IMO.

@SaltyNerdPodcast 20,000 leagues gets remade like every other decade but the 1997 one was split into 2 made for tv movies later combined. Has the guy who plays Alfred as Captain Nemo
