  • I always loved this Disney classic, but I had no idea it was such a big deal for the Walt Disney name.
Apologies to Raw and Unprepared for screwing up the name in the credits. Sorry, Joe!

The 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea submarine ride at DisneyWorld in Florida was an absolute all time favorite of mine, and a really cool experience! So very sad that ride has been dismantled.

Woah, Disney went all out with this. Current day Disney would never go this much out of their way for anything.

As far as I am concerned this is the best adaption of Vernes Novel to the screen.

A fascinating history. Thanks for all the research you did into this movie. For what it's worth, the movie that most caught my imagination when I was a boy was the 1964 "First Men in the Moon", with Edward Judd, Martha Hyer and Lionel Jeffries.

Funny, l was just going to say the same - l so remember seeing this and 20,000 Leagues at the cinema and it’s just as inventive.

I first saw it when I was six or seven in a theater on a re-release in the late 1960's. It was fantastic. The Nautilus was the coolest submarine I had ever seen. Its first appearance it looked like a monster. The squid was amazing. The seal was hilarious. Nemo murderously taking revenge against the forces of slavery and war for the death of his family was heavy, but simple enough for a kid to understand. James Mason and Kirk Douglas are incredible - especially in the scenes they share. And it all still holds up. Truly a classic.

“War of the Worlds“ (1954) was my favorite sci-fi film growing up. Every time it was broadcast on TV, I would make sure to watch it. And then when it came out on VHS and then later on DVD, I made sure to have copies and watch them over and over again.

one of my favourite films of all time, number 3. As somebody who loves marine life, the way it is depicted in a non goofy way here makes me very happy. This intertwined with the complex character of Nemo and plot is the cherry on top

This movie "helps define you till this day'. Me, too. I saw 'The Making of it' on Disneyland at age 8 and decided that night to make movies. Disney's risk on this movie, inspires my movie risks to this day.

This was the first film I ever saw in the cinema. Well its the only one that I remember from when I was a child over 55 years ago. If there were any others before it they never made any impression at all to me. This was just a visual delight to 6 year old me! And it has the best ever on screen Nautilus, never been bettered to this day imho.

It's a brilliant film; it and the source material had a huge impact on the fiction and reality of underwater exploration. I'd personally put it a bit behind 2001: a space odyssey.
Nemo's origins supposedly switched from a Pole fighting Russia to an Indian fighting Great Britain to never being established in the original book because of French censorship at the time of publication. He was revealed to be Indian in the sequel Mysterious Island, which was also explicit in the 1916 film.

In 1973 Hanna-Barbera did animated cartoon of 20,000 leegs under the sea and it's hard to find but I remember they showed a rare glimpse of the sargasso Sea and the fabled graveyard of ships....

Re-releases were mentioned. I believe it came to our local theater in 1964. I went to see it on the big screen, then again on TV, a few years later. Another favorite.

I wonder if this old Disney inspired my favorite Disney movie Atlantis the lost empire

    • @TheTongueofRa
      @TheTongueofRa 4 роки тому +1

Atlantis: The Lost Empire was inspired from a mish mash of this movie (and the original novel), Stargate, and the 90s anime show Nadia: Secret of Blue Water. Speaking of which if you haven't seen Nadia yet then I HIGHLY SUGGEST you watch the 49 epside show (the sequel Nadia movie was trash that can be ignored lol). Nadia essentially is a TV show of the 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea premise with huge improvements IMO. Without spoiling things Nadia added: a fantastic backstory to Nemo, believable emotional motives and personal stakes for why the nautilus crew follow Nemo to the death if nessary, the source of the incredibly advanced technology, and the shadow government that Nemo wages war against.

@@TheTongueofRa And that was influenced by the original Verne novels. The Mysterious Island (a semi sequel to 20,000 leagues) gives the audience the full backstory to Nemo, as well as his redemptive arc before his death in the climax.

For the record, according to Verne's book, the character of "Ned Land" was Canadian, not American.

While covering the technological and financial complexities of the film, you totally overlooked the fine performances by the stars, particularly the layered and complex portrayal by James Mason as the enigmatic Capt. Nemo.
The motivations of this one character alone would justify an entire video.
