I feel like the lack of actual rewards is what killed it, once you get the victory pose there isn’t much else to get from it aside from banners and badges, along with the fact that you couldn’t play against other people in the early days of splatoon 3
Only other thing is each card sleeves which you get by beating each character three times at Level 3. That and upgrading cards to make them holo but there’s no much outside of those
I agree the lack of rewards in Tableturf is disappointing, but I think leveling up in Tableturf mode is also a contributor to its lack of popularity. Grinding in Tableturf mode is agonizingly slow, and it takes forever for you just to get to level 50 and complete all the unlocks, getting to level 999 either requires you to download an app to do the leveling up for you, or you have to keep playing the mode 24-hours, non-stop for goodness knows how long in order to reach that level. What this mode really needs is more incentive to play it without making leveling up in the mode feel too daunting
To add to Tableturf being straight up hidden and ignored by the devs. In the Grand festival, they added many NPCs to allow you to do stuff you do in the regular plazas. They added all BUT TABLETURF. In order to play Tableturf durning Grand fest you had to either play with other people or disconnect your Switch from the internet to go back to a regular lobby and have the Tableturf stand appear
I do think that a full online queue was mandatory for it to really work, but imagine if they actually bothered to add it to lobbies to play with friends or randos between games, it'd be SO fun to just bust out the cards as you're waiting during a Series to cool off between intense matches, save your progress as the next match starts, then finish it during the next break. It'd really feel like playing a card game to pass the time, pausing and picking it up as the need arises.
To further add on to the point in the "even larger issue" the game NEVER tells you you can straight up BUY the cards you dont have. See when you get a card you already have, you get a block depending on the rarity of the card and you can exchange those blocks you built up in the card menu. Does the game ever mention this? No, in fact I found out about by complete accident when scrolling through the card list. Not only that, you can upgrade cards too, albeit is purely cosmetic and doesnt do anything but is cool you can add visual flare to your cards, same with winning the sleeves off the NPCs but the grind for it is not something you'd expect for a mode like this.Really is ashame cuz Tableturf is such a fun novelty that kind of got swept under the rug
I'm surprised people don't know, I just somehow figured out that I can buy it when I first tried to really grind Tableturf, but then again I don't remember how I discovered it. 🤔 I think I was looking around my collection of cards that I have & have not unlocked? Then saw that I can unlock it with points? Then I just buy it? In general Splatoon does have a terrible record of not telling how things work. For example, cancelling a match in PB. How would anyone even know that? At least there's indication for unlocking tableturf cards.
As a competetive tableturf player active since they introduced Tableturf PvP, I agree with a lot of what you said. The competetive scene was always really small and it's only gotten worse since the content drops ended (thus no new cards.) Bringing it back to splatoon 4 and/or an actual ingame queue would certainly help, but I think giving it its own standalone game or phone app would be by far the best option IMO. There are so many potential players but it's so restricted by only being availible in a full priced shooter game where you have to grind the actual game in order to even unlock a good amount of cards for tableturf.
Splatoon 4 to get extra cards while a mobile game as the main thing, maybe. Regardless, I'd totally play Splatoon minigames on mobile while in the toilet.

It was fun for a while though. I'd probably have played a lot more of it if there had been more interesting rewards.
Tableturf with regular matchmaking would sit quite snugly in the switch online app tbh, already has a fairly neat splatoon section and would get people to open the app - and thus engage with nintendo products - more which is the main goal of it after all.

One reason they may have added tableturf was to be a tabletop gamemode for the switch. I remember they attempted to make some games have side modes based around using the tablet and am wondering if this was originally the intention? Maybe you could have played with friends irl by each person using a joycon but that just never got finished because they saw how unpopular the mode was?

It needs more rewards too, like a little bit of g for winning or something.
I agree in lv1 & lv2 not being a huge deal. Especially at least to me, it allowed me to just study the new tableturf layout first. But grinding 30x for a card sleeve? That's tedious. They didn't even inform that that's how you get card sleeves, I had to google it. At least tell it as a dialogue after beating the character 3x or something, damn Oh I'd grind tableturf if it gives me money to build gears. Mayee other people would use it to gacha too 😂
I first learned about tableturf from getting card packs and then had to ask my partner, who at that point had been playing Splatoon 3 much longer than I had, where the hub was to actually play it because I couldn’t find it myself on the map. Once I did find it I played a bit and then basically abandoned it for several months until I remembered how fun it actually was. It’s a cool mode and I do love the card art. A table turf mobile game actually sounds super interesting. Not only that it isn’t stuck to a game with more interesting features, you can probably have references to the other games also, like a card for the S1 and S2 specials and Seeker.
I remember being in a call with a friend and they were telling me how to find Tableturf and I was baffled they put tableturf behind salmon run where you have to literally go through an alley to access it for the first time.
I do also believe tableturf was meant to be more of a minigame than a full mode, like Squidbeatz 2 was. Notably I'm basing this off of it being called "MiniGame" in the files.
I feel like one of the motivations for adding table turf is the fact that the switch is a portable system and they needed to add a mode that doesn't use gyro controls. Playing splatoon in a moving vehicle isn't fun.

@YellowFlowers2011 oh my That explains why I’ve played against the same person so much without them leaving They never even existed I’m gonna have an existential crisis
That segment about squid roll and surge reminded me of the debate between Unscoped and Scoped chargers and how useless that function is as well. You can’t surge (except for Goo Tuber), you rarely squid roll (you’re an anchor), and it’s just… why? They make these gimmicks and other things, but don’t capitalize on it.
Tableturf had new cards every season, received multiple stages post launch, and even has content locked behind Side Order, but was ultimately hindered by the lack of online queue. Add it to the list of weird decisions by the devs in Splatoon 3.
You forgot that there is the ability to play local multiplayer with tabled her, but not many people use my local multiplayer, so I guess it wasn’t noticed.
I feel like if they wanted to give us more rewards... (I talked about my issues with it in a tiktok video I made, very brief tbh) Squid beats was RIGHT THERE! Majority of rhythm games I played over the years where u get rewards by getting full combos, lvling up, and reading story dialogue. They could've easily did what they was trying to do with table turf with Squid Beats but dropped the ball imo. I still haven't gotten the emote within Table turf bc how grindy and slow u lvl up. But that's enough of me rambling... Great video btw. Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays everyone ❤
Honestly, I know my roommate would absolutely eat up a Tableturf app separate from Splatoon 3. He's not really into shooters but he thinks Tableturf is very cool. It'd be cool to see if a Tableturf/Splatoon Arcade-app also brings in other non-players too.
My main problem with Tableturf is that it feels so isolated from the rest of the game. It feels like that by playing any other game mode you get rewards that 'feed into' other modes. Your catalog level goes up, you get locker decorations, you get cash, you get new versions of weapons and so on. The game feels like an interconnected web in a sense. I'd argue that Tableturf feels like the game mode that is 'fed into' the most. You can get so many Tableturf cards if you play this game a lot. The problem however, is that Tableturf doesn't feed into anything else. You get rewards in Tableturf INCREDIBLY slow, and most of the time, you either just get card packs or new NPC opponents. The few rewards you get that actually feed into other modes like emotes or banner customisation are so infrequent and insubstational, that they don't really justify playing the mode unless you explicitly WANT to play it. I've almost come to think that collecting Tableturf cards is funner as a side element of other modes, rather than being one of the pillar game modes of Splatoon 3, simply because it's just a 'dead end'. You don't really get anything out of it.
I love Tableturf and ended up playing most of the NPCs either until I got their card sleeves or at least almost there. I eventually bounced off for the exact criticisms you mentioned in the video though: just inconvenient enough to access, and not having PVP at first then making it friends/pools only. STRONGLY cosign wanting a Tableturf mobile game or separate Switch app, I sold my copy of Splatoon 3 after the Grand Fest but would love to play Tableturf in a better way.
If they did a Tableturf TCG Pocket mobile game it would blow up. Also I would definitely die a little bit inside after my fat fingers place a card in the wrong spot
They should have table turf be a mobile game that can get you badges and rewards in the actual game (and maybe contribute to the catalog), so you can make progress even if you don’t have your switch or don’t have splatoon 4 yet and plan on getting it!
The multiplayer table turf not being public but private is probably the server issues With all the server issues at the launch and probably 1 and a half month
I really liked Tableturf when Splatoon 3 came out, but the CPUs were just too easy. I usually beat Lv. 1 and 2 CPUs within the first 3-4 turns by taking all their space. Having to play them 6 times to unlock Lv. 3 got old quickly. Wouldn't be such a big problem if there was online matchmaking, so yea, 100% agree on your points.
What killed tableturf for me is it’s too confusing it’s weird and feels too restrictive to what I expected from splatoon. the first dozen times I tried to understand the mechanics but after beating the lvl.1 cpu by sheer luck I still don’t know what I was doing. it’s strange cause I can play yugioh fine but can’t wrap my head around tableturf hell even when chara explained it saying it’s easy I’m still having trouble understanding what you do. so I just ignore the mode almost as a whole cause the other game mode are easy to understand.
Man, I always wish I got more involved in the tableturf scene, the mindgames were so cool against an actual opponent. I guess I just didn't have that much time for it when I was most into Splatoon 3. Granted, a lot of it's issues like the matchmaking aren't too annoying to someone who has a history with a bunch of 'poverty' fighting games, (a small amount of Spectral vs Generation and Windjammers, but mostly Kirby Fighters 2) and stuff like having to use a discord to get games is just something you kinda get used to. That being said, those other games aren't a smaller part of a larger game, even if they are competing for FightCade attention. If you haven't given it a shot, try it out! If you like it, try getting involved!
There are several reasons why it never became popular: - People were pretty much done with the mode before online support arrived, which ruined its best chances. - There are no real rewards to be won. You can play Splatoon 3 and get the stuff for Tableturf, but if you play Tableturf, you mainly get Tableturf rewards. That's not bad, but if you compare it to the Salmon Run in Splatoon 2, you get the coupons and gear, which got further build on in Splatoon 3. - It's not really that much fun. Splatoon 3 is primarily a shooter action genre and its side modes have other genres to offer in addition. Tableturf, on the other hand, is a mini-strategy game. My ideal possibilities or ideas on how Tableturf could be handled in the future: - Make it its own game, like an app (as you mentioned) - If it's part of Splatoon 4, then it should be less locked in single player mode (lv. 1 to 3 grind), it should be added to the map for fast travel or placed at spawn, and it should have actual rewards like chunks you can win, or at least each level up should be worth something (how about decorations and stickers or coupons for Hotlantis discounts?). There should also be in-game events where you get double EXP and other rewards. Of course, it should have its ranked options and overall better online accessibility (why can't I play randomly against each other like in Turf War, but 1v1?). But an even cooler option would be to combine the two points mentioned above. Since you have to be online anyway, why not make it an app linked to the game? You get cards in the game and can play them, and since you have to be online, the stats are constantly updated anyway. That's already perfect for mobile devices. So what if you could play the rest of Splatoon (4?) on console-only, but have the option to play Tableturf on mobile? That would be the best way to link such a side mode to the main account. Bored on a train journey and don't have your Switch with you? Get your phone out, play a few games of Tableturf and once you're home, you'll get your rewards when you start your game.
Sadly there was just very little incentive to play Tableturf. Even now I do have most of the card sleeves! Even Marina and Pearl's sleeves, so it's not like I've slept on this mode. Other than that, 5 months of auto-lose grinding for the 999 rank badge to show-off, I've played with some friends maybe once or twice.
I always thought it was a one off side thing. At least that's how Nintendo treated it. They probably should have at least tried to give it some support though
Since release i wished the resources to make tableturf had gone into porting all the arcade games from S1 and S2 into S3 so you could play them on the digital tables in the upstairs waiting area when you queue for a match. Such missed potential to never do that but instead make a card game nobody cares about instead
I only played tableturf to get the exclusive emote and I haven’t played since I got it. I do however love collecting the cards I think they’re very cute and fun collectibles! I just recently got the last card to complete the collection. I have all 260 something cards
This is shallow but I couldn't get into Table Turf because the art on the cards is goofy and kinda lame so I didn't even want to collect them. Part of the excitement about card collecting/games like Pokemon, Magic gathering, etc is the cards look really cool. The card designs for Table Turf are obviously rushed and I think more people would have enjoyed at least collecting them as a rewards in the catalogue even if they didn't play the game if the art was better and if there was some way to show them off, like in the locker or unlocking special banners or something. I like the concept of a card game within the Splatoon main game, it seems something cool that the squid kids in universe would do on their downtime in the city so it fits. I just think it needs more time to cook.
I remember people were saying there would be communities of tableturf battlers and maybe there are on like discord maybe but damn.. no one plays it anymore
Honestly, at 1st I grinded it until I unlocked the emote. And never played ditto again. Guess I have to get back to it, plenty of unlockabkes hidden in that mode.
Personally I have absolutely hated the board game Blokus for like 10 years, and this card game reminded me too much of that, so I hate it with a passion too.

I don’t know how it works for them to do that
But it’s there
they're not really other people, those are npcs using the last played deck of the user whose avatar is being shown! the only way to play real other players is to join a lobby with them
@YellowFlowers2011 oh my
That explains why I’ve played against the same person so much without them leaving
They never even existed
I’m gonna have an existential crisis
Truly a forgotten mode in SP3
I still think play table turf with my girlfriend whenever her crappy internet gets her banned for ten minutes.
I played it a bit while waiting for my rage quit penalty.
I really need to learn how to make a deck.. basic deck isn't doing it for me..
5:20 PERSONA REFERENCE PAUSE RIGHT NOW
Tableturf had new cards every season, received multiple stages post launch, and even has content locked behind Side Order, but was ultimately hindered by the lack of online queue. Add it to the list of weird decisions by the devs in Splatoon 3.
I've also thought that Tableturf should be its own moble spinoff game for the longest time.
TableTurf would make an amazing mobile game
You forgot that there is the ability to play local multiplayer with tabled her, but not many people use my local multiplayer, so I guess it wasn’t noticed.
I love Tableturf heck I even made a tier list of every single weapon
I feel like if they wanted to give us more rewards... (I talked about my issues with it in a tiktok video I made, very brief tbh)
Squid beats was RIGHT THERE!
I feel like if Nintendo made these cards in real life and made this playable irl, then I feel like it would be more popular
cheese
Honestly, I know my roommate would absolutely eat up a Tableturf app separate from Splatoon 3. He's not really into shooters but he thinks Tableturf is very cool. It'd be cool to see if a Tableturf/Splatoon Arcade-app also brings in other non-players too.
I didn’t know tableturf existed after a year of playing
I play it when I don’t have internet 😂😂
You don't really get anything out of it.
i think tableturf needs more music and "ink" colors so it feels a bit more different each match
The badge for the tableturf mode is pretty cool ngl, if only it's not so damm tedious to grind for
Cheese
If they did a Tableturf TCG Pocket mobile game it would blow up. Also I would definitely die a little bit inside after my fat fingers place a card in the wrong spot
They should have table turf be a mobile game that can get you badges and rewards in the actual game (and maybe contribute to the catalog), so you can make progress even if you don’t have your switch or don’t have splatoon 4 yet and plan on getting it!
The multiplayer table turf not being public but private is probably the server issues
With all the server issues at the launch and probably 1 and a half month
Table turf is shockingly fun, it can get quite competitive. I'm sad its online is so limited
There are several reasons why it never became popular:
- People were pretty much done with the mode before online support arrived, which ruined its best chances.
My ideal possibilities or ideas on how Tableturf could be handled in the future:
- Make it its own game, like an app (as you mentioned)
- If it's part of Splatoon 4, then it should be less locked in single player mode (lv.
3:27 the video in the backround is awsome
tableturf bad there's no reefslider cheese
Tableturf just doesnt work in my mind i spent an hour getting to aggro jelly and gave up lmfao
Since release i wished the resources to make tableturf had gone into porting all the arcade games from S1 and S2 into S3 so you could play them on the digital tables in the upstairs waiting area when you queue for a match. Such missed potential to never do that but instead make a card game nobody cares about instead
Tableturf would be a cool game to have on a phone, but it surely will have microtransactions so idk
the one use that tableturf that acutally appeals to me is the art for the inklings and octolings chara uses when talking about weapons
btw cheese
Table turf is a good game tho fr
Dude It's such a grind to get card sleeves
i usually ask my friend to run some tableturf inbetween qing just to break things up
its really fun i just wish you could play it inbetween q
I'll just leave you with one last annoyance.
The time and development that went into splatoon 3 could've been spent making third kits.
The arcade games are being ported with a fan project called splatapp
I only played tableturf to get the exclusive emote and I haven’t played since I got it. I do however love collecting the cards I think they’re very cute and fun collectibles! I just recently got the last card to complete the collection. I have all 260 something cards
There’s other squid surge spots one being on manta Maria in spawn next to a unpaintable wall
they should’ve made squidbeatz 3 and added more lanes. i miss squidbeatz
What to table turf? You’re telling me it exists? (jokes)
shadowind remembers (using card shark since day 1)
Tableturf isn't real and it can't hurt me anymore
I remember people were saying there would be communities of tableturf battlers and maybe there are on like discord maybe but damn.. no one plays it anymore
Solution: We make tableturf a real life TCG
I was just thinking the other day how forgettable and boring tableturf was. Now we have this video LMAO
It’s probably just that it isn’t interesting enough to support itself considering the complete lack of usable rewards
3:25 Captain Astronaut would be proud
Nintendo making it an actual spinoff like super mario run would be cool.
Like does anyone remember that fake splatoon island trailer????
3:19 Yooo! Overanalyzing Avatar mentioned!
Tableturf is peak
LETS GO TABLETURF CONTENT
The only new patch will be online Tableturf queue
Honestly, at 1st I grinded it until I unlocked the emote. And never played ditto again. Guess I have to get back to it, plenty of unlockabkes hidden in that mode.
It needs to be a physical board game! I'd buy it and play it immediately
This exists!! Fans have made physical sets, hell one of my friends played in an in-person tableturf tournament at The Big House I believe.
Table turf is fine...I can find time to play it but when I do ...i will play for quite some time
Please bring back the Smurf series
Personally I have absolutely hated the board game Blokus for like 10 years, and this card game reminded me too much of that, so I hate it with a passion too.
i swear i have never touched this mode. and i played Splatoon 3 day one
