  • On the 16/11/12 VESTAS Sailrocket 2 set out on it's 13th run for this session Walvis Bay Namibia. In moderate conditions with around 25 knots of wind average... VSR2 smashed the previous Outright world record by the biggest margin in the records history*. Paul larsen averaged 59.23 knots over the record 500 meter course and peaked at over 63 knots. The waters of Walvis Bay became speed sailing holy turf and the home of the Outright record for the first time. This represents the culmination of 10 years hard work. The team promise it still represents the beginning of this boats potential. Africa turned on a spectacular setting and the flamingoes are just the icing. You couldn't make that stuff up. Happy days.
    * Subject to WSSRC ratification
Directed, filmed and edited by Ben Holder.

I sail many boats - including a hydrofoil - got it wound up to 35 knots - which is pretty darn quick. 59 knot average speed is an incredible achievement - not just setting a record but this craft has the potential to obliterate the speed record. The challenges that Paul Larson has over come - the dedication, creativity - over coming adversity and road blocks - with success - well thank G-d we are here to witness history - a great team, a great design - outstanding - congratulations!

Fantastic achievement, so well deserved after 10 years of hard work. Congratulations to the Vestas Sailrocket team, and thanks to Paul for allowing us share the ups and downs of the project via the web. Not since watching Crossbow in Portland Harbour have I felt so close to the action, despite it being a few thousand miles away!

Great work and well done to all involved. My brother and I stopped in Walvis Bay on a motorbike trip up Africa in 2008 and you guys gave us the guided tour of VSR1 etc. We've been watching your progress since then.

    HOLY CRAP THATS FAST!
It takes Paul like 15 seconds to bear away! Sail Rocket is just jumping across the surface sliding sideways. She must be scary to handle.
Congratulations guys! Push it into the 60's!

BRILLIANT!!!!! Science, Engineering and sheer determination. And the best part is that VSR2 is not quite done writing records. Congrats team!!

I have been following Sailrocket for a few years now, and it is great to see the team has finally got the world record. As a windsurfer I kinda feel bad for those guys trying their hardest down the coast right now in Luderitz, but as someone with a physics background I think Sailrocket beats everything in terms of elegance and design. I hope you guys put the record out of reach of everyone else for years to come. Your perseverance is an inspiration and congratulations on your achievement.

    Classic stuff.
    Larso: "Ok, let's boogie..."
Ok that was fast. Ok, that was pretty fast. Ok I liked that one..."
Helen: "That could have been it. That looked fast Paul."
    Alex: "10 years."
(talk about calm appreciation - you guys are awesome!!!)
    And the best:
Larso: "Told you I'd do it."
You guys OWN IT! And so calm about it too. Far more calm than after the first 60+ peak run earlier in the week. It looks like you are not done yet. You guys look like you want 60+ average. Full on awesome.

Where's the obligatory sunset shot? ;^)

Absolutely spectacular achievement! Superlatives are inadequate compared to what the team has accomplished.
From everything I've learned and know about Paul Larsen, he'll keep pushing the bar up to put the record out of reach for a while. Sailrocket is designed for 65knots, and I would expect that the team will be at least tempted to see what lies beyond. Wonder if Sailrocket 3 will have a kind-of wave piercing front float or shock absorbers to help her deal wtih bigger chop/waves?

It's as much of a boat as a windsurfer or Hydroptere Pietka, what are you talking about? The record is all about a wind powered speed record. Anyone who follows the people who challenge the outright speed record will know how much work goes into these challenges. Well done guys..!

Au contraire, InTheLoop. That's yesterday's news.
Sailrocket 2 just smashed the kiteboard world record (previously held by Rob Douglas 55.65K), with a current speed of 59.38 knots on 18Nov12, subject to WSSRC ratification. Smart money has it that in the next week or two Sailrocket2 will raise that record well into the 60s knot range.

Only thing I'd change might be to put a small v foil under the bow instead of the v-pod, and I'd further streamline the driver's head and the cameras. At 70 mph, it's all important!

  • @nupeswv
