McDonald's needs to hire this man

The problem with the new McDonald's shake/soft serve machine is software and the manufacturer being against right to repair. They want to service the machines and they charge way over going rate. When you find someone else to repair the machine, they void the warranty and then sue you.

"Kytch, a California tech company, filed a $900 million complaint in March, accusing McDonald’s and Taylor of defamation and stealing trade secrets.
The complaint claims that in 2019, while Kytch was testing a device that allows users to remotely fix broken ice cream machines at a number of McDonald's locations, McDonald’s and Taylor were stealing the information and secretly developing their own device that did the same thing."

I've said it once and I'll say it again, I love the old man. When he retires he needs to teach young men the knowledge that is in he head. Because it is obvious that he is a very, very intelligent man. John your very lucky to have a father like him, and it's obviously paid off for a positive future for you.
People like Jr’s dad never really “retire”. Reminds me of my dad, who was a welder for almost 60 years. Even when he officially “retired” he never stopped tinkering around and fixing things around the house and in our yard, or welding and fixing things for family and friends. I learned so much from my pops, and watching Jr’s videos with him and his father remind me of all that. Our fathers were from a different generation!
JR and his Dad have something you can't teach. You might be able to train them how to repair something, but not the processing that it takes to troubleshoot a problem.

I grew up in the HVACR business... started carrying my dad's tools when I was eight. That was fifty years ago. In all my years, I've never seen any of those three machines, nor have I met (aside from my Dad) anyone as intelligent as your Pops. The term "technician", had to be invented to describe men like them. They've forgotten more than most of us will ever know. Cherish that man, and listen intently to every word he says!
I would use "engineer" instead of "technician.". An engineer builds from scratch instead of being a part swapper. I like the definition of an engineer as being, "Someone who can make for £5 what everyone else would make for £10."
Well said. Was going to say the same thing but no need. As someone who also grew up in the HVACR trade with my dad I highly respect this guy. When you have passion in what you do and learn you will absorb ALOT. This is a awsome video

But I agree 100%, many old school 'technicians' are miles ahead in engineering talent than the vast majority of my graduating class at one of the best engineering focused universities - my dad is one of them too.
I have no interest in ice cream machines, hvac, other than the aspect of how it was done back then. In this case - historically essentially. But your dad kept my attention for every minute. Obviously a creative thinking kinda guy. A repairman's true repairman. It is impossible for you to truly grasp the wealth/depth of character you have as your dad. Not because you don't appreciate him, but because you don't know any other kind of way a father would be.... you grew up with it. You should have him on more, great guy! Thanks for sharing

Every word "Old School" said was true. I got a dad like that. His passion was motorcycles. He went to Harley-Davidson School in Milwaukee in the late 1930's.
He could take a basket of parts and turn it into a motorcycle. It didn't matter if he had ever seen one before.
My first motorcycle was handed over the back fence in boxes. We had it all restored in months. I'm 70 now, those are my best memories.
I got a lot of respect for your dad, I’m a refrigeration tech and I can tell your dad knows what he’s talking about. I would really like to hear your dad talk about his career and how he got to where he is at.
Your father being a refrigeration engineer explains everything, I knew the answers to all his issues, as an apprentice in the 80's in New Zealand we were still fixing fridges from the 40's and 50's. I later did a full Taylors course in the late 90's. Nice to see the R12 bottle with the Black Cap that must be at least 30 years old. Note this is the first time since I finished my apprentice and of this stuff has come up, at every company afterwards we just replaced the old stuff.

Everything I didn't know that I needed to know about those ice cream machines! I was in suspense, amazement and awe at how he told the story, kept me teetering on if it was gonna run, and did not disappoint. He left it with me feeling satisfied he can fix ANYTHING. I instantly had a flashback to being a young boy in the sixties and listening to my Grandfather explain things to me for hours. Your Dad is fantastic and could teach the world a thing or two.
So great to watch this. We have a pre WW2 Mills Model 25 Ice cream machine that we bought used in the early 40's. We make ice cream in it for our business almost every day. It is nearly impossible to find information on these old machines. Many of these companies had to stop production to make things for the war. It is Awesome to see someone else geek out on these! I also have a Frick model 100-F8 compressor in the basement that used to run our deep freezer that I cannot find anything about.

I've said it before and i'll say it again your father is incredible! I honestly love watching this man work on anything. The way he backwards engineered that wiring was bad ass. i was in awe saying things like ''no freaking way'' under my breath the whole time he was explaining how he figured it all out.

My uncle had the Connecticut, Taylor franchise in the late1950's through the 1980's. He made a ton of money, being the exclusive distributor for the whole state. When he bought in, he was given the choice of 1/2 of New Jersey, or all of Connecticut. His wife refused to live in New Jersey, so he took the less profitable option.

Beautiful semi-hermetic compressor in the second unit you showed. I'm also impressed with your method for drilling the fan motor and punching the stator out. I've been trying to figure out how to get the two-phase stators out for rewinding on some other units I've had for rebuilding. Really enjoying seeing this so far. Now to resume watching...
Very cool find on the compressor motor! General Electric had a patent on the metal-glass fused terminal pins for years which they used on the old SO2 Monitor Top compressors. Everyone else had to use the design you had there with the phenolic insulators. Westinghouse also had a design like that which failed all the time. They were susceptible to electrical shorts from exposure to sulphur dioxide. Those all failed and shorted to ground. SO2 was still being used back in the days when this was made with R12, and mistakes happened with refrigerant charging. I would say someone likely put SO2 in the system by accident. Is that a GE made compressor? I have a few of the Frigidaire semi-hermetic units from the 50's which had similar terminal seals as yours, but have not seen a GE with them. It confuses me since that had a GE condensing unit nameplate.
Amazing find on that second "almost new-old-stock" Taylor machine, as well! What are the chances?
But life in the vintage refrigeration hobby has taught me one thing.... These machines come in multiples to those who save them. They hide until a worthy soul starts looking for them, then they reach out for salvation. That is how this works....

I am going to share your video on the Facebook Vintage Refrigerator Collectors group, which has a major following for older commercial equipment as well as home fridges. Hope you are a member there and can comment on it. I have several belt-drive compressors which I have collected over the years and do rebuild them. I remember seeing those two Brunner units you bought! Had no idea they were from the Coors plantation. They were too far from my place in Alabama so I didn't consider them.
I can't wait to see your belt-drive Taylor ice cream machine! Please do continue sharing these videos! Also I hope you have seen some of my antique refrigeration videos. This is also one of my passions.

Now I want a bowl of ice cream... I grew up with a corner store right next door. They had two Taylor soft ice cream machines (one vanilla, one chocolate). When the store closed in the mid 70's, I asked the store owner what they were going to do with the machines and he said I could have them if I wanted. I was on the moon with excitement right up until my mother gave me the stink eye and said NO. I was one sad 13 year old for the next week or so!

As a former Taylor technician this video is an Oscar winning documentary. I've worked on refrigeration equipment all over the world. And to see this is shear joy. I was almost killed awhile ago and suffered neurological damage. So I'm not able to work in something that I started by handing tools to my uncle at 10. It's hard now but nice. Called a doover 10 years ago and found my true love and started a family. We currently live on the island of Malta. So while life is tough it's beautiful here. Just got to get back on my feet and hopefully they remove a cyst from my brain and can get back to doing what I love. Wow what a pleasure to see and hear someone talking about something like I do. I couldn't imagine a better shop teacher that Jr's dad. Loved the man that taught at our Jr. high. Both Automotive and industrial arts. Automotive teacher has passed and my brother actually is doing some work for the Industrial arts teacher we both had. I graduated roughly 30 years ago! I was surprised to find he is still kicking.
JR your father is a national treasure in my eyes. You make awesome content but it’s never better than when he’s involved in the storyline.
I recognize the curiosity and excitement your dad has for figuring out these machines. It reminds me of my younger days in the Navy as an electromechanical tech with outdated systems on outdated ships. Our equipment was old and not supported so we had to first figure out how it worked, then figure out what was actually wrong, determine if a part or substitute part existed and usually have to make it ourselves. That was for mechanical, electrical and electronic parts. They were scary and happy times because we didn't know how half the stuff we had to fix worked, initially, so every day was a new adventure. We developed the motto that we may not know how it works but we can absolutely fix it. We became the tiger team that went to all the other similar ships on the waterfront to help them figure out and repair their antiquated systems. I remember so many stories like what I just heard in your video along with the smiles and the satisfaction for figuring out the head scratchers. So many of them happened just like what your dad just explained. We didn't have the internet but we had every copy of the Electronic Information and Maintenance Bulletins (EIMB) in massive binders that helped us through many "unsolvable" problems. Thanks for sharing this.

I'm just climbing on the bandwagon of the fans of your Dad! Please do a follow-up on the ice cream machines, and any other projects your old man is involved with... fascinating stuff! Also, I really appreciate how much you cherish your Dad. My Dad was a senior computer systems analyst for the government with a high school education, and he learned Fortran, Cobal, and LISP. He worked at the Pensacola Naval Air Station until he retired at 50 (after 30 years of working for the government). I remember him taking me into the building where he worked as the boss... he told me that the entire building was dedicated to keeping up with dry-goods inventory for the U. S. Navy. Later on, in the early '90s I showed him my first home computer running on MS-DOS and Windows 3.1. He told me that my home computer had more computing power than his whole building at the N. A. S.!

I know Taylor wants one of thos emachines but something your dad can do for them would be so scan all the manuals and paperwork that came with that one complete unit and place it online somewhere. Also I would send a copy of it to Taylor so they can add it to their archives. I am sure the big fire they had in 1949 wiped out most of all that documentation and they would love to have a copy.

Wow. I was absolutely fascinated. Especially when he got to the end, and stated the compressors were from walk-in coolers. So the compressor they used on their ice cream machine cold was powerful enough to keep a whole room cold. Crazy.

I worked McDonald's maintenance before, and i cleaned and maintained some Taylor machines... They are well built but.. overcomplicate and the service is awful....

Also, tell you dad about ebay saved search function that send you an email of new listing matching your search, it's helped me find and get some hard to find items.

15:10 That has to be the funniest story I've heard from your dad so far. I've had a rough few days and this got me to burst out laughing. Gotta love it when it finally seems like everything is coming together and then luck takes a dump on you.
But I have to say a massive thank you to your dad - his "beat it up without beating it up" saved my bacon when a pipe burst and I had to close a valve that both hasn't moved *and* had water leak on it for decades. Some penetrating oil from all sides, tapping it with a tack hammer (doing my best woodpecker impression) and turning it back and forth got it all the way closed.

I like to watch your channel and especially when your dad is on it and is working on one of his projects. He is a an absolute treasure. You can sense it in his voice and body language how excited and proud he is of figuring out these things, and he's darn good at it. Absolutely AMAZING.

You just solved an old mystery for me. Back in 1969 my brother had a 69 MachI Mustang. As a prank I removed the coil wire and replaced it with a piece of washer tubing, I even slid the boots on it from the coil wire. I had the coil wire in my back pocket. I figured when the car wouldn't start I could 'fix' it for him. Well, he got in the car fired it up and drove away. I was shocked and to this day I was never able to figure that out until now.
Who would have thought that a piece of rubber hose would be electrically conductive???

I had a similar experience trying to track down parts for a wonderful and giant meat slicer that was about 100yrs old. It was huge and overbuilt and spent the last 50yrs sitting in a barn but we cleaned it up and used it in the restaurant until some bits wore out and it became my project to fix it.
After a week or two of talking to people from what is left of the company they ended up calling an old retired guy who still came around the shop from time to time. He knew how to decide the non standard model number even tho it wasn't in their database or records. He also knew the location of some random nook in the old warehouse with some new old stock parts for it that hadn't moved since like 1930. The sharpening wheels happened to be the original form that was duplicated for most newer models so the replacement stone wheels for the newer ones still fit. We bought those and some steel parts for it and she is still in use today.
The person from the company I had been talking with asked for some show pictures of it once I cleaned and fixed it up. I was happy to provide them. I still get a kick out of them having to drag out some old dusty wizard to find the answers.

If it wasn’t for one thing, I would suggest that you make sure that someday Taylor gets the machines to preserve them. Of course the one thing is Taylor’s keeping users from being able to fix their own equipment (right to repair).
WE had a Taylor ice cream parlor/lunch counter pharmacy in our town
of Lakewood,N.J. back in the fifties.
Taylor ice cream machine...lot's of memories:)

Everyone has a niche and collecting and rebuilding ice cream machines is a pretty cool hobby. "I'll have a double scoop of vanilla, please."

Fascinating stuff. Your Dad has saved some absolute treasures of vintage industrial design. The thought that he could refurbish equipment that old says something about the benefits of design for simplicity and durability. Looking forward to seeing these gems in action.
I've said it before, you are so lucky to have a dad like that. Anyone with a bent towards mechanical geekdom would love to hear your dad's stories. He is a true 'shade-tree mechanic' who also knows what he's doing. Cool! It is also apparent that you have learned well, Grasshopper.

I'll tell you where you might find more of these. At some old county fairs, you might see an Old Timer with a tractor-driven ice cream machine. The ones I've seen of course use ice and rock salt for refrigeration, but I wonder if any of them are using the tractor PTO to run an old belt-driven compressor. In the 20s and 30s, tractors had a lot of utility uses and ran on different fuels, and I wonder if these ingenious people adapted a Taylor to a John Deere!
