  • Halifax's political landscape is gradually transforming, with increasing dialogues about diversity and representation. Local organizations and community leaders are actively working to support and encourage people of color to pursue political office, aiming to address historical disparities and advocate for a more inclusive and representative political environment.
In a recent episode of Community Update, hosted by Promise Okoye, Daryl Johnson, a candidate running for Mayor of Halifax in the upcoming municipal election, shared his vision for the city. The discussion centered on key challenges facing Halifax, such as housing, transportation, and community safety.
Johnson, who has previously contested both municipal and provincial elections, drew on his extensive background in community advocacy, youth engagement, and board service. He recounted how the COVID-19 lockdown prompted him to reflect on his potential to serve as a political leader, ultimately motivating his decision to run for office.
To tackle the housing crisis, Johnson proposed repurposing vacant city-owned buildings, including the old Spring Garden Road library and Saint Patrick’s Junior High School, to provide immediate housing solutions. He also suggested forming a task force composed of dedicated politicians, community members, and experts from marginalized groups to collaboratively address homelessness.
Addressing transportation, Johnson emphasized the need for infrastructure improvements, advocating for more frequent bus services, additional overpasses, and revisiting plans for a commuter rail system to alleviate congestion. He also proposed deploying public safety officers to enhance security on public transit, supplementing existing police efforts.
Johnson’s dedication to marginalized communities was evident as he outlined his plans to amplify their voices and ensure their representation in city governance. His vision is to build a more inclusive and supportive Halifax that reflects and serves all its residents.
