DMB live is a spiritual experience. There's no other way to describe it. I saw them play 25 times in 2002 alone and no show was even remotely the same. I got a firedancer tattoo to commemorate that part of my life - my teens and 20s. Bartender is a favorite and I've always said I would like it to be played at my funeral. But their performance of Seek Up on 7/30/01 is mythical... for me, the single greatest performance in music history.
Hell yeah!
Ooooh yes that "Seek Up" version is mystical beyond explanation. I've seen them live 3 x. Tim Reynolds is an underrated guitarist as well
See DMB yearly @ SPAC in Saratoga NY.. Friday and Saturday, one of the best weekends of the year.
Lyrics, lyrics, lyrics. SO very important with DMB, they're a very thought & soul provoking band. ❤
I wasn’t a Dave Mathews fan until a friend of mine dragged me to one of his concerts. Blown away.
I’ve literally done that to countless people… I would always get “we are just going to see the crash into me band from the 90’s?!”
My reply would be just trust me and wait and see…
Literally countless friend groups converted over the years…
Much like Pulse is for Pink Floyd, Live at Central Park for DMB is tits. Don't drink the water, Jimi thing and Cortez the killer at Central Park are great. Best version of All along the watchtower is live at Red Rocks. They do it better than Jimi Hendrix. He also does a great version of long black veil with Emmy Lou Harris.
I’m still waiting for Sebs to see the live version of Wish You Were Here from Pulse lol. I’m not sure he picked up on Gilmour harmonizing perfectly with his guitar. I’d love to see that!
I use to make fun of my sister for listening to them when I was younger. She drug me to a concert in 05 at our home venue. Let’s just say. I see them multiple times every year! Favorite band/live concerts!
You spoke of Dave's voice. Let me tell you something: I came across DMB for the first time in 1997 on VH1. "Don't Drink The Water" was the song. I've barely ever had a reaction like this to hearing a song for the first time. I felt like I had waited for this song my whole life. Like I had waited for Dave's VOICE my whole life. I became a fan in that moment.
This entire live album is a gift that continues to bless all who experience its greatness.
If you're going to go down the DMB rabbit hole, check out the song "Two Step," but the live version from Live in Central Park. It's long, but worth it.
I agree and the cool thing about checking out full band version of Two Step from Central Park is that there is that there is also a really good Dave and Tim version from this show. It would be easy to check out two different versions of the same song to compare and contrast.
Yep. And a much better representation of the DMB sound.
That entire concert was just nuts, in the shadows of 9/11… also imo the peak of DMB as a band, still having LeRoi and Boyd, Warren Haynes sneaking in for some licks…
I wasn’t at that show but damn I wish I was. I’ve seen them @ Red Rocks (either 95 or 96, it was an early live release), at the gorge a few times, countless times at Alpine Valley (more local to me), VA Beach, and yes I was lucky enough to see them in the very beginning at “the warehouse” when I was about 10 years old…
All the times I’ve actually been there I really wish I was there in Central Park
Dave is a huge fan of Willie Nelson. He did a cover of a song of
Willies’ called Ain’t it Funny How Time Slips Away…now Willie
has been my favourite Artist for years but that cover knocked
me off, bro, just incredible. Dave is very different and talented.
He won me over big time. ❤
I was at this show! Remember.. this is what they OPENED with! Dave is my absolute fav! I am tattooed.. my kids have initials.. I have a vanity license plate..
if you want to see the BAND, check out All Along The Watchtower from Central Park.. I was there as well.. 120k people.. $20 tickets.. it changed my soul.. the song is a bit long but it showcases almost all band members.. point of note.. it was also almost exactly 2 years post 9/11..
Seeing this band, live, is like being at a MUSCIAL SMORGASBORD and SAVORING EVERY BITE!! The INSTRUMENTALS: OH, MY!!! ...and, DAVE'S VOCAL!! WHEW!!! LOVE IT!!!
React to the full band live next. Ants Marching- Piedmont Park
Two Step- Piedmont Park
Don’t Drink The Water- Central Park
All Along the Watchtower- Central Park
#41- Listener Supported
Rapunzel- Listener Supported
Anything from Piedmont Park, Central Park or Listener Supported is a good starting point.
DMB is one of my go-to's when I don't know what I want to listen to but need music on. It always does the trick. My fondest wish is to see them live, but I'm allergic to marijauna so I can never go, and it super sucks. Go see them live if you can.
DMB has a VERY unique sound. Utilizes odd time signatures a lot, uses dynamics a lot, different keys and time signature switch-ups. He has a surprisingly powerful voice with an amazing timbre. As a musician yourself, you will LOVE DMB. Look forward to your dive into the rabbit hole.
Hope you are ready to go down another ranbit hole!! DMD is fabulous ❤❤
FIrst comment? DMB is one of my favs. Very talented group.
Dave Matthew's Band is one of the greatest bands of all time. Name another band that has a world-class drummer, violin player, horn section, and a bad ass bass player. I have been a huge fan since the early 90s. I have seen them more than 20 times and each time was a unbelievable experience. Please check out Seek Up (Epic Wailing Version). Tripping Billies, Dreaming Tree, The Stone, and 41 are some of their best songs. And my personal Favorite All Along the Watchtower. A Bob Dylan song made famous by Jimi Hendrix and perfected by DMB.
Love ☺The Dreaming Tree 7.8.15 (Summer Warm Up Tour)
The stone and #41 are definitely some of the most moving DMB songs ❤
I'm subscribing b/c I hope you'll do more Dave. Let me tell you a few things you'll find interesting:
#1: You can listen to the same song in different formats (Dave by himself, Dave with someone like Tim, Dave with the full band) and each version is equally good, but for different reasons.
#2: I used to work at the biggest concert venue in the Bay Area. I've seen probably a thousand concerts, no one brings the passion like Dave does every single night. The musicians in his band are amazing as well.
#3: Dave is a COOL person and super unpretentious. He's donated a small fortune to charity, his songs have deep meanings, he stands up for important issues in the world.
#4: The Warehouse Sessions has Dave + only his drummer Carter (so instead of Dave & Tim, it's Dave & Carter) and Dave plays piano on one of the songs there.
#5: Most concert tickets sold in the last 40 years:
#1: U2 = 26M+
#2: Dave Matthews Band = 23M+
#3: Rolling Stones = 22M+
#4: Bruce Springsteen = 20M+
#5: Elton John = 19M+
Great reaction... wait until you hear the whole band live. Cheers!
Well said. 👍🥂
get the dvd or whatever and watch the entire thing...that one and Listener Supported are Amazing...keep on brother!
Thank you for checking this out. I know someone who follows Dave Matthew’s Band like Deadheads used to follow Grateful Dead. But I had never heard any DMB music. It is fascinating! Let’s hear some more!
DMB LIVE, LIVE, LIVE!!!! All the way! SO many great concerts have been recorded with excellence.
CRASH. Has to be next 👍🏻
LOVE DMB! BEST CONCERT EVER! ❤❤ Definitely check out more of them! You definitely won't be disappointed!😊
Yes! As the Band and 'solo' indescribably something that must be experienced for oneself. I put 'solo' in quotes because he is big on playing with other super musicians.
Great choice for first exposure to DMB. But Dave and Timmy are solid musical gold just two best friends and their guitars.
If you like this Dave and Timmy did Storytellers on VH1. The time signatures and vocals are a so incredibly moving. Saw them live many times late 90's and early 00's
The Space between song and music video is pure sugar cane for the ears and eyes, Satellite is awesome too
Bartender live at the gorge! A completely different song...
My first concert ever was DMB 1998. In the late 90’s early 2000’s DMB were EVERYWHERE. They were all over MTV and the radio stations. I’ve seen DMB at least a dozen times since then and they’re still amazing 😊.
Ah! You found DMB! Heh. If you want the jam band experience - 'Two Step' from the Central Park concert is fantastic introduction to their stuff. Bit longer - it's like 18min? 19min? But it vibes so hard and is a great demo of being at a live DMB show. :) (I mean, if you're going to drop into DMB music, might as well go for the full 20min long jam fest live versions, right?)
I don't know about other DMB fans - but for me, the studio versions are alright. The live show versions/experiences are why I'm a nearly 30-year fan at this point.
Ty for this! I had forgotten how beautiful his voice and artistry are!
Influenced from his upbringing in South Africa.
This album is amazing, the live shows also amazing ❤ I met him in a hotel lobby when I was 15 checking in with my mother and friend. We were in town for his show lol I said I wouldn't tell anyone who he was if he gave me his autograph...he did..And a hug ❤❤❤
You would really enjoy doing a deep dive on DMB. Crazy musicianship, great lyrics and outstanding live performances. You will not be disappointed!
I am beyond glad that MTV or Much Music didn't inflence my direction in music. What a horrible thought.
People made fun of DMB for 2 reasons - 1. he was so different and people didn’t understand;
2. he was popular because they are so good and some people ridicule that in order try to make themselves different.
I just found your channel about a month ago. I can't believe I never thought of you listening to GMB because their music is so what you love. Live and recorded. And, yes, more DMB!
Check out Dave Matthew’s band with Warren Haynes live Cortez the Killer.Great jam you’ll love Warren on Guitar!
Cortez The Killer - 9/3/11 - DMB w/ Warren Haynes
Just subbed so I don't know your style preference, but I'll throw my hat in with "the stone" or "#41", either studio or "live listener supported" versions for both. Get ready for not normal
The Trevor Hall shout out was one I wasn’t expecting. I also dealt with some fairly severe anxiety in that same timeframe and the song Green Mountain State from the album Chapter of the Forest was a staple in my rotation when I needed to bring everything down a notch.
Anyway, DMB is definitely a unique band that some people unfortunately love to hate. They’re incredible, though. Obviously this wasn’t a good example but Carter is a truly unreal drummer. These dudes still bring it and somehow Dave has maintained his voice for over 30 years now. Definitely recommend seeing them live.
DMB was crunchy hippie music that turned out to be so much more. Kinda like a modern "Dead". Gravedigger, 48, satellite, u & I are all recommend
Crash into Me is one of my many favorites. DMB is so much fun to watch LIVE and incredibly talented!! 😎
"If All This Gold should steal my Soul" a beautiful Line About the Materialism that consumes most on this Planets
if you really want to get their journey Please, for your own understanding, start at the beginning of their career, the entire band is of the chart...Thanks!
If you don't recognize Satellite, then you should get the music and try to play it on guitar. Then listen to the version. I'm not going to pretend that it is the greatest song, but it's definitely different.
Lie in our graves from that show is perfection…. “One note!”
There’s so so so much more. Every decade sounds a bit different. Love DMB!
For the band's stronger sound definitely worth checking Don't Drink the Water in the Central park live version! Or their cover of Dylan (Hendrix) All Along the Watchtower.
Always live performances ❤
You are missing out on DMB. I''ll bet you will be blown away by the level of musicianship of this band. Always a treat watching the band and Dave perform live, but THIS acoustic version of Bartender with Tim Reynolds is just on another level. I got really emotional and goose bumpy the first time I saw this clip.
DMB live is an experience that is hard to put into words. It's an awakening of sorts that needs to be felt and heard. If you don't like hearing one song for 10 minutes, DMB is not for you. Thank you for turning me onto Trevor Hall. Chapter of the Forest is an amazing album. Thanks again for that.
DMB is definitely an experience! That band gives 1000% every show, and I have never had a bad time. He is genuine and accessible. Again, commercial success is not a gauge for me, as genres change continually. The ones that sustain typically are the ones that are truly talented and simply like to create art. I think you would really like more live shows ( any) but really enjoy some solos with Timmy. He is truly a unicorn!
Gravedigger is one of my favorites. And DMB was VHI staple music. His music was rock, world, jazz, and folk combined.
Oh this ACTIVATED my love for Dave Matthews Band. Heck, HECK yes. I need to bring all of this back.
They're two different bands, studio vs live. Both are great, i prefer live.
Lie in our graves with Derek Trucks is my favorite live performance.
Good on who put you watching this duo instead of the whole band. They know what you are talking about. The full DMB is fine, and all, but if you are a guitarist and into meditation and (generic, or eastern) spirituality, then this is probably much more up your alley.
Also, this entire live album is absolutely amazing. Highly recommended. Funny you mention albums during tough times, Dave Matthews and Tim Reynolds acoustic set at Luther College (which as a whole I actually find superior to the Radio City Music Hall version), was what I listened to daily, every day while running my landscaping route in 2001. I had a LOT of things that needed to heal and grow. They were truly integral to my healing.
That whole set is art. My favorite song was "Grave Digger"
Oops!! The song I wanted you to listen to is titled Crush! Not Crazy. 🤷🙄. Sorry... 😆
I took my 10 year old son to see them last summer at The Gorge Amphitheatre (one of the best concert venues in the world)! It was wonderful.
finally got to see them there this Labor Day weekend! incredible place
Love
You should check out The Dreaming Tree live from Piedmont Park in Atlanta in 2007. That was my first time seeing them live and as others have commented, it was a spiritual experience
Just checked out that Trevor Hall album, thanks for that sidebar, I love it!!
Stop what your doing and listen to this concert’s “lie in our graves”
P.S. anything in the studio will be good…live? You’ll never listen to studio version again. Cheers
First of all, I love your channel.
I’ve seen Dave many times over the years. I took my oldest son, who is now 34, to see DMB when he was 20. He’s now seen him more than I have, and has turned his wife and children onto Dave! It’s incredible when music becomes generational, and that speaks to Dave’s music! You love live music, so check out The Central Park Concert!
Concerts are great.... if you like a bunch of stoners in their 40s and 50s that are drunk and high off their asses. The music is great, but the crowd is obnoxious.
Just watch that whole concert. Their live music is better than the studio music or the official music videos.
Love the band and the song Appreciate your reaction.
It's kind of distracting how the video clip is out of sync a bit.
You won’t regret going down this rabbit hole. I’ve heard his live shows are a spiritual experience!!
This feom the dave and tim acoustic stuff there are a few of those i like better thand the band ones all acoustic guitar
New subscriber confirmed 🤘
Please check out Eric Clapton Tears in heaven
Hi Seb could you Please check out Keith Urban " RAINING ON SUNDAY " VIDEO OR Roy Clark " MALAGUENA" video TY
Omg MEGADEATH! YES!!! Me too
This song feels like a prayer in the purest sense.
There is NOTHING like DMB live. One of my favorites by him is “Sister” … which has a really sad backstory, he grew up in South Africa and his sister was murdered by her husband. He wrote the song in the POV of her husband when/after he did it… all of his songs are so unique and that’s why they are still relevant after 30 years. Great reaction ☺️
My bad, the song is called The Stone🤦♀️ but Sister is another gut-wrenching song about her
I will be seeing DMB Friday night at the Bourbon & Beyond Festival in Louisville. Dave is an experience like no other. Many
call his band the ultimate jam band and I would agree. He was one of the most popular bands in the late 90s and still has a massive following. Go down that rabbit hole, you won’t be disappointed. His guitarist Tim Reynolds is definitely one of the most underrated you will ever hear and you should check out some of his and Dave’s acoustic material.
Enjoy tonight! Bourbon and Beyond is by far one of the best music festivals.
I'm so thoroughly enjoying your experience listening to this magic!! Please, do more videos listening to them!! I'm subscribed!! Peace and love, brother.
The mad genius of Tim Reynolds
Hi Seb, hope ya"ll are doin well, could you Please check out Earl Thomas Conley "HONOR BOUND " TY
🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
DMB fans are pretty aggressively attached to the band, which tends to give them a bad (or at least ravenous) name. I was a huge fan but fell away when the guy I married wasn't into them. I've come back around, which has been a pleasant rekindling of nostalgia and happiness.
Man…you picked an amazing concert to start with. Listen to that whole album start to finish and thank me later. But also definitely check out their full band live shows as well…Central Park and Piedmont Park are both amazing full band shows.
I would be remis if I didn't come here and recommend that you react to "41" from this exact same concert. It makes me tear up every single time it's a beautiful song.
If you listen to "Crash Into Me", "The Space Between", "Crush", or "Gravedigger", they may sound familar. But if you see DMB live every song will knock you off your feet.
Dave was born in Jburg, then his family moved to the US for his dad's job with IBM.
Dave met Tim Reynolds, the musician he introduced at the end, at a Charlottesville, VA bar where Tim was performing and Dave was working as a bartender. Tim helped Dave get his career started.
need to do a review with the full band.. this is just Dave and Tim.. always up for this either way..
Loved the reaction! Please note that all of these comments talk about LIVE PERFORMANCES! The albums are great! ALL OF THEM. But DMB is best experienced LIVE. I second Watchtower from Central Park! Good God! A DMB concert is like going to church. It’s good for your soul!
This made my day!!!!
Ants Marching, Jimmy Thing, #41...live performances. You're welcome.
The big thing ive learned about Dave Matthews (and similar artists) is *patience!* The songs will grow and change and ebb and flow and move like, sometimes in amazing and startling and moving ways. But its gonna happen S L O W L Y. I can understand why thats not for everyone. But if we can just give into it and allow it to happen and be patient with us, its an amazing ride.

This was the absolute best reaction this.. and you know music to.. this was great.. YEAH IT WAS LIKE CHICK MUSIC .. so I never listened to it. DUDE the song WAREHOUSE Farm aid ... 7 years ago on youtube
I started listening to them when I was 12. 22 freaking years ago now. They are still just as good, if not better!
I love the popular songs obviously, but here’s a B-side song.
You never know live VH1. It’s the full touring band around 2002 on the rooftop in NYC. They ended up playing a whole 45 minute set but it’s crazy time signatures, odd tunings, amazing lyrics and when you think you can get the count down, the infamous Carter Beauford goes from 6/8->5/8->6/8 and think there is some 4/4 in there somewhere.
Been creeping on your channel recently, love your vibe, just subscribed. I was waiting for you to see Dave. This is the “free crack” some that people first get hooked on! Near perfect performance! So many more songs! My “ top 10” playlist of DMB is 47 songs deep. Yes:
Gravedigger, Crush, Funny the Way It Is, Baby Blue, Ants Marching, All Along the Watchtower, so so many more….
Go nuts bro. Then come to the Gorge and see them live.
DMB is awesome. The best songs aren't the ones released for radio. Fell in love with them in the mid-90's after watching a live concert on MTV from the French Quarter in New Orleans.
Check out Peter Frampton making his guitar “talk”.
Clean version

I saw him in 2020 and he still has the touch ❤
I was a giant Dave and DMB fan from about 1994-2004… I’ve since lost interest without LeRoi and Boyd and the newer music that they have been putting out since the early 2000’s.
Been to at least 20-30 shows but my last show was in about 2014/2015… still love the music, I just stick to the old stuff…
I’m 47 years old, had about 30 years of DMB! Welcome in!
Any Dave Matthew's is phenomenal but you didn't hear DMB. which is actually a band. Electric violinist, 16 year old bass prodigy. One of the all time best drummers & saxophone. Really unique & totally enjoyable.
YES YES YES. More DMB. Especially if you’re a fan of unique signature/time changes. My fav song of theirs is one called “#41”. 👍🥂
Lol, @ they weren't pop. They were kind of mocked by the jamband community for being overly pop. Go listen to a studio version of Ants Marching or So Much To Say or Crash. Those were definitely on MTV all the time. Amazing live band touring still.
You’re right to listen to Dave live. Just FYI though, this isn’t the Dave Matthews Band. This is Dave and Tim doing a two-man acoustic gig. The first Dave and Tim live show “Live at Luther College” is a masterpiece. To get a better feeling for the full DMB, try Ants Marching live at Piedmont Park. Weird suggestion here, but listen to the studio recording of the song first, maybe a couple times. Then watch it live. The power of DMB is their live shows. The original 5 members produced what I’d call “World Music”. No electric guitar. Electric violin, saxophone, etc. It’s amazing.
Check out “two step” from “listener supported” (or any other live two step really), Cortez the killer from Central Park. For just normal album music “crash” is an album I can always listen to cover to cover… #41 and proudest monkey are my main jams from that album.
For live stuff the rabbit hole is so deep it’s almost endless.
No they were not “pop” music and never got the mainstream credit, but they built a following throw grass root and talent that has lasted generations now.
To this day I will argue that their drummer (Carter Beaufort) is the best drummer alive.
DMB is made to be listened LIVE!!!
Please, please, please only listen to his Live versions of any song you decide to react to in the future. Enjoy ☺️
