Great video. Man I remember you chopping that bad boy up.
I just recently got an Allen * Heath GL2800 32 channel mixer with 2 power supplies (all for $400). I do have outboard analog gear which I prefer to use over plugins whenever possible, and I do some recording though generally I run mics through outboard gear. This mixer replaced by Soundcraft 24 channel.
I like having all the faders and running it as a summing mixer, but also feel - as you did - that I will outgrow this. The EQ's and routing are decent with 8 bus channels + L/R masters. I am already looking at other alternatives like an XL-desk, but that will be down the road a few months from now.

Nice clip, I bought an xdesk along with an xrack with compressor, eq”s and the ssl bus compressor… the physical wiring/ cabling is complexed and expensive, my main studio’s MAC PRO IS DOWN, so I had a career change or forced early retirement during COVID from my day job. Now I have the time to slowly get back to my music. I just wish ssl had better documentation on how to hook all of it up with the out gear and summing. Once I get my rig all set up, I will make a video on how I did it.. the Ssl tech support was helpful but they assume you already have experience on an ssl console… I am about to take some pro tools classes at Berkeley online college to get a more solid foundation on that Daw.
P.s. it looks like SSL has updated with replacement gear like the Six, big Six UC8 or UF8 …but an SSL is An SSL I may get another xdesk once I get it all up running smooth.. merry x-mad to all of you..

Great video! DO you have a video on how you use the SSL in your mixes? Since you are not recording with it, do you run the stems that you get through it? And how do you manage projects that have more than 8 stems ? (Or whatever tracks the ssl has)

Thanks, so yeah I just released a few videos on hybrid mixing and those go through how I sub mix with the daw and send 18 channels of audio into the SSL X-Desk

You definitely gave me a great idea to have a SSL brain or main sound for my studio. 👊🏾💯

I was curious about this as having always looked at the xdesk and having a gl4000. I figured the ssl could maybe sum better, but I wonder how much? From my view, I think the summing sounds good, better than say my GL2400, but the one thing sonically that grabs me the most is how good the hi-pass filter sounds on the 4000. I have a boatload of plugs, but nothing sounds like those do. The hi pass switch in the 2400 feels like it introduces a phase problem. The eq I think is very decent on the 4000, not so much on the 2400. I'd also say it's more musical when hot compared to the 2400, but I have to use that second set of main outs with the level control back to the interface because say the 4000 at +28 and the Apollo interface can handle say +20. There are a lot of other cool things about the 4000 too, like the relays on the mutes, and bunch of flexibility. Regardless, the end result and how you can get to it quickly is all that really matters. I like your setup, it makes a tone of sense. Also I might add that never use the 4000 preamps and usually use a couple audient asp880's into the board, then direct out to the interface. Anyway, it was nice to hear your thoughts and they are appreciated.

    Hello,
I just purchased a house and have the space to build a studio. But Because the electricity bill and the cost to build a studio cost $20,000 according to your other video. However at this time I just want to write songs record and find musicians who do it in their studio at their house. And go from there. Exchanging online is probably where I’m leaning toward.
I don’t know where to start and I’m very lost but I want to get started.
May I have a consultation with you and maybe we can see what we can do.
I love the look of your studio. But not sure if I want to do all of this. At least not now.
Mostly because I don’t know how to work the equipment.

If you had to choose between mixing in the box with plugins
or hybrid mixing back with the Allen & Heath with modest outobard like a few comps and verbs
    what would you choose?

    • @TrueSoundTV
      @TrueSoundTV  3 роки тому +1

Hey Ryan, first of all great name ha ha! If I was mixing for other clients, I would probably still do a hybrid set up where I use the DAW but then also use the Allen Heath mixer. If it was just my own music, and I was never working on other peoples songs, I would choose to do as much of the mixing on the Allen Heath as possible. For me it’s all about the experience of having a physical thing in front of you that allows you to make EQ and volume moves. To me it’s so much more immersive and exciting.

allen & heath analog mixers were never great, mediocre at best... it was midas then souncraft then them in the analog live world... so... easily a plugin would be better...
