I want to thank you for this very well put together video with the songs and cars. Great to see AK Miller and for me to see my dear old friend R.I.P. Tom McMullen form Publisher of so many magazines especially Street Rodder and so many more. He is at about 8:30ish seconds with his '32 Good old number lol 69 can't miss his profile in the middle! Much appreciated and much missed of a dear old friend and father figure in my life!
the car at 1:33 was last owned by screwdriver car club of culver city bob arner. while bob was away in the korean war his brother lynn arner raced the car at el mirage for russetta timing assoc. the car came loose on the trailer, rolled forward and smashed the nose. bob came home in nov 1952 took the car apart and put it in the alley next to the garage . the house faced palms ave almost caddy corner to palms elementary school. a kid scavenge it, then he was drafted and his mom chucked it. the kid returned from service and joined the screwdriver car club.[ see pic of him talking to my dad at screwdriver car club on facebook ]. the kid designed the kidney bean wheels at halibrand. chuck sarnos his name. a recreation from 250 photos of this car by terry baldwin of ventura whom i see at the sprint car races at ventura. this car also hot rod mag car cover july 1950.
Great vid....i have pics of mom and dad dating in a 32 with a flathead 6 ..the exhaust ran down the passenger side and mom had a scar from where she burnt her leg getting out 1 time...and a pic of dad in a ..as mom called it .. a " rail job" model A with no body just a seat with a flathead v8 ..she said she thought it was a merc. ..i was born in 55, wish I had bern born in the 40's ...hot rodding at it's best in the 50's

I was just a kid, when we first went to the drags at Madera 1956...We built (WE BUILT -DIDNT BUY STUF OFF THE SHELF AT A "SPEED SHOP") three cars before I went into the Navy...A rear engine aluminum framed gas dragster whose rear end was a bit to narrow and unstable, an "A-altered coupe"which did 136 in 1957, and an AOG Dragster which did 163.5 at Fremont the day Hank Vincent died in his "Top Banana" and I happened to be the last guy to talk with him before he got in the car …Watched it go down....I was about 13-14 years old...Belly tanks, Ardun flatheads, Bean Bandit racing team from Salinas, lots of good friends and a great way to grow up...The pits were the best Sex education any young boy could have...Still remember the gal at Half Moon Bay who seemed to be wearing pants that were painted on...Have absolutely no respect for the guys who buy their cars and "race them"....
the music was awesum in that era..the cars were too...makes me wish I was in my prime at that time in automotive history..millners ride was the sweetest whip ..the California kids ride was badass tooo...thanks for sharing..what was the last song on the video called? its guitar instrumental, ive heard that in numerous movies back in the 80s..all music related movies..
Starting to learn while photos like these show the cars it takes the early hot rod oriented films of the 50's and early 60's to see the cars side to side with the stock versions in order to give you a better understand as to what was involved. Young people today see these photos and think repo bodies and craftsmen with $$$ metal forming equipment, all it takes is money. These cars were built in the backyard with hand tools.
@3.00 minutes. Drop tanks for a Body ! These guys did everything by hand. Today, they just pour money into a car, don't do anything themselves except bolt the stuff on, then they get 1st prize at a car show ! The guy with the totally original E-Type or me with my '85 euro spec Alfa Spider don't even come close to getting a Peoples Choice award, and their were 10 of these awards.
in this pic at 1:33 IS RALPH SCHENCK. the car had a chevy 4 banger. when bob arner of the culver city screwdrivers [ facebook ] acquired the car in 1948 he ran a ford flathead at a top speed of 154. more history on facebook. hope this helps
AT 1:47 Ak Miller roadster, with Buick engine...inline 8? what scta class would this be now? It is listed as "class B' at that time (July 1947) clocked at 106.25mph. Wonderful photo and info by the way...I am looking at the potential of an inline flathead "retro" racer as an alll around fun way to participate in timed events, hill climbs similiar events and a drag race now and then (good guy type retro) :-)
Innovation, dedication, they were gutsy in every respect. There were NO shops building a car for you, no trailer queen 32s with $$ paint. More like rat rods of today. Oh, by the way, if you join the h.a.m.b. don't post anything about rat rods, you will be banned, narrow minded thinking limiting creativity.
Also noted: Those cars were mostly all Fords and not just '32 Fords. Lots of Model A roadsters in there and even a few Model T buckets. but only one coupe, a '36 5 window.Is that really the way it was in the '30s and '40s?

car 57 was Don Blair's sold to STP and roadster p/u 178 is Ollie Prather's who also ran Indy out of Arcadia Body Shop.
