My grandfather used to drive the rolling chassis down to the coach works in Connersville, IN and the finished ones back to Auburn, IN. He figured he drove more different Auburns, Cords, and Duesies more miles than just about anyone as it was about a hundred miles each way. The rolling chassis didn't even have seats so he strapped a milk crate to the chassis and sat on that.

Jay's worth $350 million, 50 of that in cars, so yea, there's no car he can't afford, but this is a family heirloom, so unless they fall on hard times they will never sell it, and Jay knows that.

Layer each slice of bread with a slice of provolone, 1/2 slice diced Swiss and 1 tablespoon Parmesan cheese. Place bowls on cookie sheet and broil in the preheated oven until cheese bubbles and browns slightly.

I'm sure Mr. Leno knows but possibly not so many others know the Duesenbergs and Ettore Bugatti were collaborating on an airplane engine at the end of WWI. They have one of these engines at the Udvar-Hazy Center of the Air&Space Museum in Va.

Great piece! When I was writing my book, Time Traveler, I used the Duesenberg SJ with the supercharger option (1932 on). In researching the various cars of the era, I was floored when I saw the specs on the Duesenberg's engine with double overhead cams, four valves per cylinder and 320 horsepower! By comparison, a Mercedes 540K (k = Supercharger) of the same era, put out 180hp. The "State of the Art" Mercedes 540K was capable of 110mph, while the supercharged Duesenberg could actually do 137 mp!. No knock against Mercedes-Benz at all, it's just that the Duesenberg might have well been from another planet in the late 20's and 1930s! Totally amazing!

This car is so awesome. Duesenberg's I think are the greatest American cars ever produced. They were literally decades ahead of their time in the 1920's and 30's. They had a Straight 8 engine in 1928 that made 320 horsepower. A 1932 Ford Flathead V8 had 85 horsepower. That is just so amazing. One of the coolest hot rods I have ever seen
It would never be a Dusesy engine (I'm not that well off any longer and never will be again) but I've love to build a straight 8 rod like this. Long, low and beautiful. Truly one of the most extraordinary early 'rods.

The two in the car don't mention it or even pause in their conversation. You can bet that if such a rare engine started unexpectedly emitting any smoke or steam they would immediately notice and stop the car.
What a beautiful car. I never really appreciated old cars, I always focused on late model cars and hot rods, until I started watching Jays videos. Now I really enjoy the old vehicles, and the stories behind them.👍
Jay has spent a lot of time on concourse and at auctions. This particular model is a no-ceiling car. My opinion is worth less than a pro appraiser, which is worth very little, and I'd say this is a $400k car easy. If the right old guys show up on the right auction day, it's a 7-figure car. He clearly would love to have it but he doesn't want to bid against it. He's also buffing the value for this guy cause that's how Jay rolls.
I keep coming back to watch this video again and again. The car's proportions and color are just so right. I love the way the shape of the radiator shell is almost a perfect offset of the straight-8's cam cover. It looks like the car was designed to show off the engine, so why have a hood to hide the mechanical sculpture?

E.L. Cord bought the Lycoming engine company in 1927 and made it part of the Auburn-Cord-Duesenburg manufacturing company. Auburns were using Lycoming built engines even prior to that.
You are right Lycoming did manufacture engines for Duesenberg but it is fully a Duesenberg design. It was probably a wise decision to have Lycoming manufacture their engines as Lycoming was a well known engine manufacturer after WWI, but just about any willing engine manufacturer could have produce the Duesenberg design. It's the design itself that makes that engine so spectacular.
Lycoming produced engines for the 50 Tuckers produced also. They used helicopter engines because they were overengineered. Another groundbreaking Tucker innovation that the big three couldn't compete with.
Jay is polite enough to ask Duesenberg questions, considering his expertise. Probably using techniques learned from years of interviewing. If there is room on the production team, I'll take the job making sure questions and answers are duplicated in the video :). Great way to start the week. Thanks Jay.
That is incredible... dual over head cam and 4 valves per cylinder in an engine from the 20s. What's even more impressive is the power output per liter. It's roughly a 7L making around 400hp naturally aspirated which is really good, even by today's standards!!!
Is it just me, or did they repeat every thing at least twice? Two different days of filming? Was the editor drunk off his butt when he put it together?
They drove by that casino at least twice and the light was different each time. I thought all those cameras on the top of the glass were some kind of weird decoration when I first saw it.
In 1978 I started work at the largest Mercedes-Benz dealership in Australia. Over 30 years I have worked on MB, Rolls-Royce/Bentley, Ferrari, Lamborghini and countless other makes. In the last 13 years I have have taught and written curriculum for military and civilian apprentice mechanics. But here in 2021 I cannot think of a superior brand to one that I read of as a teenager in the 1970s. RIP Fred and Augie, you still have no peers 100 years later.

This has to be in my top 3 favorites what a mean real roadster with history but i think this is probably on Jays bucket list ive never seen him go on a road trip to show us a car not on his utube show im talking about and he looks so excited that i was excited for him he asked the same questions twice and thats cool i enjoyed it cause thats what makes Jay real u no he still gets excited enough to get rattled over a car and he has his own Duesenberg collection but I'd love to see him get that car but that mans family saved it and deserve it Jay has the parts to build one it wont have the pedigree but it still be cool another absolutely great show never nu about that car thanks Jay

Leno urgently needs a continuity director so he doesn't record the same conversation over and over again in different locations - I bet the editing wasn't fun as they tried to make the best of the repetitive footage. Needs a continuity director to avoid repetitive footage, because the repetitive words need to be organized by a continuity director to make sure they don't keep repeating themselves in different locations...

There is indeed a lot to love about this vehicle... But my eye keeps going to that glass window on the driver side cam cover. Love it...
That engine was manufactured by Lycoming for Duesenberg, as were a lot of Auburn and Cord engines of that period.
Yep, My Dad and I, with a good friend, once built a log splitter with a 4 cylinder Lycoming airplane engine to power it.

E.L. Cord bought the Lycoming engine company in 1927 and made it part of the Auburn-Cord-Duesenburg manufacturing company. Auburns were using Lycoming built engines even prior to that.
You are right Lycoming did manufacture engines for Duesenberg but it is fully a Duesenberg design. It was probably a wise decision to have Lycoming manufacture their engines as Lycoming was a well known engine manufacturer after WWI, but just about any willing engine manufacturer could have produce the Duesenberg design. It's the design itself that makes that engine so spectacular.
Lycoming produced engines for the 50 Tuckers produced also. They used helicopter engines because they were overengineered. Another groundbreaking Tucker innovation that the big three couldn't compete with.
Omg I saw this car years ago at Blake’s machine shop in south Phoenix. They did some machine work on my 35 Packard. Great story.

That is incredible... dual over head cam and 4 valves per cylinder in an engine from the 20s. What's even more impressive is the power output per liter. It's roughly a 7L making around 400hp naturally aspirated which is really good, even by today's standards!!!

In 1978 I started work at the largest Mercedes-Benz dealership in Australia. Over 30 years I have worked on MB, Rolls-Royce/Bentley, Ferrari, Lamborghini and countless other makes. In the last 13 years I have have taught and written curriculum for military and civilian apprentice mechanics. But here in 2021 I cannot think of a superior brand to one that I read of as a teenager in the 1970s. RIP Fred and Augie, you still have no peers 100 years later.
Hey JLG - Love your videos, but the last few videos are still just way to dark and look weird. I dont know what changed, but the previous format/videos were much better.
Some young millennial getting too fancy with After Effects. They think these videos need a ton of filters and effects and it just ends up ruining it.

This has to be in my top 3 favorites what a mean real roadster with history but i think this is probably on Jays bucket list ive never seen him go on a road trip to show us a car not on his utube show im talking about and he looks so excited that i was excited for him he asked the same questions twice and thats cool i enjoyed it cause thats what makes Jay real u no he still gets excited enough to get rattled over a car and he has his own Duesenberg collection but I'd love to see him get that car but that mans family saved it and deserve it Jay has the parts to build one it wont have the pedigree but it still be cool another absolutely great show never nu about that car thanks Jay

Likely geared for an older audience (like me). Us old guys don't remember too good so a little repetition repetition is is a good thing a good thing :-)
Leno urgently needs a continuity director so he doesn't record the same conversation over and over again in different locations - I bet the editing wasn't fun as they tried to make the best of the repetitive footage. Needs a continuity director to avoid repetitive footage, because the repetitive words need to be organized by a continuity director to make sure they don't keep repeating themselves in different locations...
