I loved it and I have it saved because I love Martin Short. One movie I loved him in was "Father Of The Bride" where he played the wedding planner. Absolutely hilarious!
When I was in Junior High, I was lucky enough to be on the SCTV Christmas special, in scene where there was a boys choir. Martin and John Candy came by to say hi to the rest of the cast and happened to pop in to say hi to us as well. I have to say those were two of the nicest guys you'll ever want to meet. I saw him do Ed Grimley live at Second City at the Old Firehall in Toronto before he debuted the character on television. I just about lost it. The audience absolutely loved him from the very start. He's so so special.
Martin hosted the Jimmy Kimmel show for a week earlier this year and he was so funny, one of the few times that somebody nowadays can make me actually laugh out loud
If you want to see who Martin Short is, there is an interview with Kathy Lee Gifford that speaks volumes. Kathy Lee has had a near constant run of fluffy, feel good daytime talk shows forever- live tv for housewives and shut ins . Around 2012 Martin was a guest on the show and Kathy brought up his wife, the fact that they’d been married so long, how lovely she was and how much they were still in love. What she didn’t know was that his wife Nancy had died 18 months previously, from terrible cancer. You can possibly sense some surprise for a split second, but he immediately goes along with it, and doesn’t let her know until the commercial break. For someone referred to as the 'scourge of talk show hosts' this was a very instantaneous act of kindness. He didn’t want to embarrass a host and didn’t want to bring down an audience or derail the show. You can see that it was more than just professionalism, his instant reaction was to save the host.
He demonstrated the class that I wish every celebrity would. I've heard only one story of him losing his temper, and it was to defend extras from an irate director.
@@TheDarkPorkins Martin’s wife was not a famous celebrity, and he and his actor friends all seemed to keep their marriage partners safe from the limelight and paparazzi. But Lee-Gifford’s staff definitely should’ve added this to the background research they’re supposed to do on every guest to help out the hosts.
I watched that show - only because Martin Short was on it. My heart was breaking for him as he responded to Kathy Lee Gifford's uninformed questions about his wife. He is such a classy act.
He's also one of the kindest people ever. You can get away with so much more when you're just that nice. Three Amigos! was a much watch when I was a kid. Showing his sweet and gentle side.
I was on the Canadian game show "Definition" back in 1978 with Martin Short & Patrick Macnee... Something just clicked with Martin & I, and immediately fell into perfect ad lib rhythm during the commercial breaks. While the host, Patrick, and the other guest contestant were cracking up laughing; we just continued to play off each other faster and faster while the others couldn't stop laughing. We went all the way into the 'Back From Commercial' countdown, all the way until the count reach 3 [5... 4... 3... 2... 1... Back Recording], and timed it perfectly to both simultaneously look very calm, serious, and utterly confused at what all the others were laughing about. I always loved improv and adlibbing, so getting that chance early on when I was still in my teens to play off of a true improv artist of his caliber was so much fun.
The hosts are comedians too. This is what comedians do when they are just sitting around by themselves. They roast each other. Short is elite at roasting without vulgarity. The hosts would fire back, but he makes them laugh so they can't. They are not getting offended because that's what comedy is all about.
Mert, Martin Short and Eugene Levy met at McMaster University where they became great friends. They decided to try out for 'Godspell' which was launching a production in Toronto in 1972. In that production was Martin Short, Eugene Levy, Gilda Radner, Paul Shaffer, Andrea Martin, Victor Garber, Dave Thomas, Jayne Eatwood , and Nancy Dolman who became Martin's wife after he dated Gilda Radner. I was lucky enough to be in that audience as a young teenager. That cast then went on to be part of Second City improv comedy club when it opened in Toronto in 1973. The first club opened in Chicago in 1959 (Chicago is called the Second City as a dig by New Yorker's). The Toronto cast included other Canadian comics like John Candy, Catherine O'Hara, Mike Meyers, Robin Duke, Rick Moranis, Dan Akroyd, and American comedians Joe Flaherty, Harold Ramis and others. From that Toronto cast came the Canadian produced, brilliantly funny, SCTV (Second City Television) that ran for eight years. Lorne Michaels, another Canadian, was the creative force behind Saturday Night Live (NY)- and took many of the Canadian comedians from SCTV to appear on SNL. I went to every Second City Toronto production a few times a year along with visits to Yuk Yuk's, a stand up comedy club in Toronto where Jim Carrey, Norm McDonald, Russell Peters etc appeared, and saw all these guys when they were starting out. Many of Martin Short's characters, such as Ed Grimley, were created back in those early days of Second City. I love all these guys so much, and it's hard to have a favourite as they are all so talented - and they are all still good friends, hanging out with each other at their cottages in the Muskoka's. Just to add to the history, we have the largest international comedy festival in Montreal called 'Just for Laughs' that started in 1983, along with a television show of the same name. Sadly, 'Just for Laughs' is cancelled for 2024 while the company tries to recoup after financial issues after Covid.
I loved "Godspell". I was 15 and took the GO train from Oakville with some friends to see it while it was still at the Royal Alex. I remember having to make a mad dash back to Union Station so we didn't miss the last train back to Oakville, lol. I still have my playbill & ticket stub!
Have you read Martin Short’s memoir? I usually have trouble reading non-fiction, but being from Hamilton, thought I should know more about our greatest comedian. He’s an excellent storyteller, I highly recommend that book.
@@singtweetypie Thanks much for the historical background on some of Canada’s greatest comedians. Some of it I knew but you added some great information. Enjoyed reading it. Makes me think of my Dad who loved comedians. I remember him making my sister and I watch Ed Sullivan whenever his favourites were on, Wayne and Shuster. 👏👏🥰
@@Lakeshore14 Thank you so much. We also watched Ed Sullivan and the Dean Martin Show as they were my dad's favourites shows as well - and he also liked comedians. Wayne and Shuster were very clever, and Ed loved them. I always followed the careers of all those comedians I saw so early on. Coincidentally, my eldest sister was a singer in the band 'Jason' which Steve and Morag Smith started before they went on to produce the ' Smith and Smith' TV show and then Steve went on to produce the 'Red Green Show'. My sister was a very talented singer, and even then, Steve and Morag were doing comedy bits on stage which was very different for a band during those times. I'm glad Steve had such success with his career, as he is such a lovely man. Here's a bit of trivia for you:. Andrea Martin was/is a sister in law to Martin Short, and they are aunt/uncle to each other's children. Andrea married Bob Dolman, brother of Nancy Dolman - Marty's wife's .They have since divorced.
@@HRHDMKYT No I haven't, but appreciate the recommendation. Martin is such a clever man, so bright, that I totally expect his book would be brilliant. My daughters and I watched these movies so many times and know every joke. I just love the guy and was heartbroken for him that he lost his wife so early on.

A relative of mine had a summer job near Lake Rosseau in Muskoka. Her first table that she was serving as a staff member was leaving and one guy turned to her and said, "I would like to reserve a table for 7 people at 7:00 pm. She asked him who's name the reservation would be under and he looked at her in surprise and said, Martin Short. After he found out that she was going to the same University he did and stayed in the same residence at the University, he was happy to chat we her. The Muskoka area in Ontario, is a little like Hollywood North in the summer and so I guess some celebrities are a little surprised, when people don't recognize them.

As a Canadian who loves British comedy, I'm so happy you recognized Martin Short as the brilliant Canadian comedian he is. And you're right: his sarcasm and put-down wit is the opposite of his loving and kind nature in his personal life. His savage impressions of Jerry Lewis - whom I used to love until I discovered what a horrible persons he was IRL - are so accurate, it's scary...even down to his looks. Little known fact: unless you've seen his special from Toronto: he sings beautifully!
In 1994, Short was awarded the Order of Canada - the Canadian equivalent to British knighthood. He was also inducted into the Canadian Walk of Fame in June 2000. In 2017, he received a Lifetime Artistic Achievement Award from the Governor-General of Canada.
I'm so glad Mert Can poppped up on my You Tube choices. I learned a lot about Martin from this clip. Short is a Canadian treasure. I loved him in The Father of the Bride movies.
I am Canadian, and I have been entertained by Martin Short for decades. That said, I have never seen such a great episode showing his lengthy career and exposing his life. You really did him justice, and thank you for educating me. He sounds like a great humanitarian and is such a light. I believe another one worth exploring would be Catherine O'Hara. She is great in so many SCTV skits like "Rome, Italian Style" with Andrea Martin, and Schitt's Creek.
Also google interview Martin Short and Kathy Lee Gifford. She thinks his wife is still alive and he is very gracious and does not correct or embarrass her. Martin Short is a class act.
At the beginning of every Letterman (and later Conan) appearance he would make a joke about the way Dave looked. These were all written before hand. In fact the guests on talk shows usually went over the topics in pre-interviews with segment producers. There's nothing worse than a talk show guest with nothing to say. One guy who didn't go by that formula was Craig Ferguson, who would rip up the cards of topics at the beginning of interviews. See his interviews with Ricky Gervais and Robin Williams. Another thing that Short would do on Letterman's show is sing musical numbers written for specific occasions.
He is definitely in the top ten. There is Ryan Reynolds(Deadpool), Jim Carey(Ace Ventura) but Mike Myers of Austin Powers, Wayne's World and Shrek fame probably takes the cake. Marty lives about 30 minutes from my home and he is just a prodigy. He fits in that Eugene Levy(American Pie), John Candy(Uncle Buck) category. Canadians are underrated for their sense of humour. Yes, humour has two u's in our country. I'm tried of being fact checked by Americans that don't understand that the English language we speak evolved from ENGLAND. (I have used the words defensemen and back-catcher in comments and never lived it down.) Thanks Mert for making this video. If you want to know about any Canadian Celeb's reach out I'm a bit of an encyclopedia. My Wife likely was involved in the building of their Muskoka Home.
One of the coolest things that I’ve seen by him, was after his wife died he was on a talk show and the interviewer was joking and asking questions about his marriage not knowing his wife had died. He handled it with such dignity and respect. The love audiences through on him was off the charts.
Almost any of his Jimini Click interviews are terrific. When he subbed for Jimmy Kimmel on his late night show, his interview with Melissa McCarthy was hilarious.
Apparently, if a guest cancels on a late night show, they will call Martin and he will turn up and be 'on'. Marty was in SCTV with John Candy, Eugene Levy, Catherine O'Hara. There was a Jiminy Glick show. It doesn't matter which episode you watch. They're all funny.
Jiminy Glick interviewing Catherine O’Hara on Primetime Glick is a classic😂🌟 Micheal McKean as Adrian VanVoorhees, his harp playing bandleader was hilarious!!
A lot of Canada’s best comics were in Saturdays Night alive, including MartinShort. Lorne Michaels, who created SNL, also a Canadian. A lot of Second City cast members ended up on SNL.
The best Jimminy Glick moment is when he asked Mell Brooks "what's your beef with the nazis". Balls man.......balls. Also his character in Father or the Bride, Fronck, brilliant, stole the movie.
There's a video posted recently of his son's wedding. Eugene Levy officiated, Steve Martin played some music at the reception, guests included Steven Spielberg, Tom Hanks and Rita Wilson, Victor Garber, Catherine O'Hara. I was surprised to see it pop up in my feed.
I liked Martin Short in the movie - "Inner Space." He was one of the 2 main characters in this movie. He was ALSO very good as an assistant character (whose scenes were memorable) - as Fronk in - "Father of the Bride." There are a few Father of the Bride movies. I don't remember much about the 2nd one or if he was in it, but I am thinking that he was. I liked his SCTV character of - Ed Grimley & his German fashion/"it" character portion on the show, but I don't remember if that character had a name or what that name would be.
I’ve been here in Winnipeg for over two decades, so I should nominate David Steinberg, who even as a young man had Johnny Carson ask him to be the first alternative host of The Tonight Show on his first appearance and then was invited to lunch with Don Rickles, Mel Brooks and Jack Benny while still new in the U.S.! His appearances on The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour are legendary but unfortunately got that #1 show cancelled!

Martin Short and Don Rickles are the 2 best talk show guests of all time. Both would happily and mercilessly roast the hosts - and any guests present.
Not that I know Martin Short but he's my favourite actor/comedian in the world. Such depth, really.
The Bill Hader interview is funny AF
He had a good time.
Yes!! Bill cannot stop laughing 😂😂😂
In 1994, Short was awarded the Order of Canada - the Canadian equivalent to British knighthood. He was also inducted into the Canadian Walk of Fame in June 2000. In 2017, he received a Lifetime Artistic Achievement Award from the Governor-General of Canada.
Martin Short is a brilliant Comedian, and I recommend his book!
I remember seeing him at 2nd City in Toronto, such talent!!
Martin Short is a gem. ❤
I'm so glad Mert Can poppped up on my You Tube choices. I learned a lot about Martin from this clip. Short is a Canadian treasure. I loved him in The Father of the Bride movies.
If you enjoy Martin Short you should REALLY look into his Jiminy Glick character man you'll kill yourself laughing 😂😂😂
Jiminy Glick Interviews Bill Hader had me in tears.
Jiminy Glick - pretty much every one is memorable. An absolutely quick, sharp and funny mind.
One of the best!
Mr Short is Canada’s Don Rickles.
Ps. Love your accent brother
Also google interview Martin Short and Kathy Lee Gifford. She thinks his wife is still alive and he is very gracious and does not correct or embarrass her. Martin Short is a class act.
Someone who's has grown up in Hamilton my whole life that joke is on point 😂😂
At the beginning of every Letterman (and later Conan) appearance he would make a joke about the way Dave looked. These were all written before hand. In fact the guests on talk shows usually went over the topics in pre-interviews with segment producers. There's nothing worse than a talk show guest with nothing to say. One guy who didn't go by that formula was Craig Ferguson, who would rip up the cards of topics at the beginning of interviews. See his interviews with Ricky Gervais and Robin Williams. Another thing that Short would do on Letterman's show is sing musical numbers written for specific occasions.
Yes he had a Jiminy Glick show. I loved his interview with Robin Williams and Willy Nelson
If not seen yet, you would laugh and enjoy Jimini Cricket's interview with Bill Maher done a few months ago on Bill's show "Real Time"
Almost any of his Jimini Click interviews are terrific. When he subbed for Jimmy Kimmel on his late night show, his interview with Melissa McCarthy was hilarious.
Second that!! Most of the time, all Bill Maher could do was laugh!! Great Jimini Cricket interview!!
Martin Short is a comedy assassin. Anything with him and Conan is A+
Ahhhh....Marty. Keep representing us smartass Shorts. ❤
It's Short's Katharine Hepburn that kills me every time.
Martin Short is my favourite entertainer of all time ❤❤❤
Apparently, if a guest cancels on a late night show, they will call Martin and he will turn up and be 'on'.
Marty was in SCTV with John Candy, Eugene Levy, Catherine O'Hara.
There was a Jiminy Glick show. It doesn't matter which episode you watch. They're all funny.
Everyone who knows Martin Short will tell you he is one of the nicest people ever. He doesn't have a mean bone in his body.
You gotta play Jiminy Glick. It is crazy!😂
Clifford is still one of my favourite movies.
Jiminy click is a hysterical character of which there are many episodes. It may have been a series?
Jiminy Glick interviewing Catherine O’Hara on Primetime Glick is a classic😂🌟
Micheal McKean as Adrian VanVoorhees, his harp playing bandleader was hilarious!!
Jiminy Glick and Seinfeld was a great interview of two incredibly quick comedians.
Mel Brooks too.
I was on the Canadian game show Definition with him as a celebrity guest. Nice guy.
Not until the last 20 years or so have I truly appreciated his talent.
smart as a whip..sarcastic to a tee. Perfect Canadian. Know when to to fold 'em, know when to hold 'em.
As incredible as Marty is, his chemistry with Steve Martin cannot be understated. Neither can my fandom. Go Leafs Go! #CanadianComedyGOAT
SCTV was a series I looked forward to seeing. I love Martin Short, I must say!!!
You are fun. I enjoy your content.
A lot of Canada’s best comics were in Saturdays Night alive, including MartinShort. Lorne Michaels, who created SNL, also a Canadian. A lot of Second City cast members ended up on SNL.
Oh, you might like the movie Three Amigos with Martin Short, Steve Martin and Chevy Chase. So silly it’s hilarious.
The best Jimminy Glick moment is when he asked Mell Brooks "what's your beef with the nazis". Balls man.......balls. Also his character in Father or the Bride, Fronck, brilliant, stole the movie.
Favourite!!! You should check out the SNL clips for preparing the doctor for the Princess's baby delivery... sssoooo funny!
Jimmy Glick interviews Bill Hader
Martin is good on Only murders in the building. Love that show.👍
He’s like a polite Don Rickles 😂
BTW, Don Rickles had a reputation among the stars he heckled that he was a really nice guy. Same as Martin Short.
His singing show tunes on David letterman priceless
If you can find the full Larry David, Mel Brooks or Brad Pitt interviews. It is great when they play along treating him as if he is a real person.
Have you seen him in his character "Jiminy Glick", or however you pronounce it.
You need to do all the jimmy clicks interviews , recently he took over as host for a week I think it was Kimmel's show but every interview is gold
He was hysterical in Arrested Decelopment.
I saw his first appearance with Carson next to Bette Davis and it didn't go well. Lol
I'm a US American, and your show is great, even though I have to use Google Translate.
I highly recommend his Jiminy Glick interview with Bill Hader. non-stop laughs 😆
You should watch his movie "Clifford" ... Oh my God dude , you'de laugh your arse off ! *crisp high five* from Boston bud
Jimmy Fallon is actually fairly humble to be honest
SCTV is a must for you. It's hilarious and brilliant
He had a great time doing the movie "Three Amigos'. With Steve Martin and Chevy Chase ....Fun
He is also a savage host as Jiminy Glick, he's so hilarious 🤣
You really need to see some Jimminy Glick, interviews. Marty is hilarious.
he's from hamilton. went to mcmaster university at the same time as eugene levy, dave thomas and ivan reitman. the first three were from the hamilton area. reitman from toronto.
