Bach - Canzona in D minor BWV 588 - Schouten | Netherlands Bach Society
- The Canzona in D minor, performed by Dorien Schouten for All of Bach, was based on an archaic style of composing. With the eruption of the Baroque in sixteenth-century Italy, composers became more interested in instrumental music. The main genre was the canzona, a solo or ensemble work in various movements, which evoked a whole range of moods. Bach followed the archetype in detail, which became a work that almost appears to be an exercise.
Recorded for the project All of Bach on October 1st 2015 at the Bovenkerk, Kampen. If you want to help us complete All of Bach, please subscribe to our channel bit.ly/2vhCeFB and consider donating bit.ly/2uZuMj5.

Dorien Schouten, organist
You can almost hear Bach saying, "Look how easy it is. I've shown you what to do, now go away and write one yourself." Thank you Dorien for such a relaxed tempo at which we could hear the interweaving of the voices all the better.
Starting with at 6:07 you can see tears in her eyes. This is music of unbelievably high quality, composed when Bach was 20 years old (!): amazing how even at this early age, he already towered above composers before him.
The empty Church comes alive with this masterpiece

Angels must be dancing !!
💮💮💮
Emil Cioran once said: " God owes everything to Bach" .
Is the only proof of its existence.
I agree.
J. S. Bach: Supreme mastery of compositional craftsmanship/skills - irrefutable, and profound understanding of the emotional elation and pathos of we fallen, yet wondrously wacky, Earthians. All realized perfectly, with a few tools; chromaticism, rhythmic accentuation and displacement, and flawless contrapuntal, imitative, part writing. Who ever did this better? Who ever will? You know the answer...sure you do...it's easy...no one. // This performance is beautiful...the organ (and organist, Dorien Schouten, for that matter...and, I don't only mean physically) is beautiful...and this entire NBS series...yep, you guessed it...very beautiful, indeed. Continue, please.
Well said Al and Phil. He must have come from another planet. No human can match him.
Yet again, the initial subject draws one in as one hears new modes of articulation and accent. Fresh, tactile, interesting, subtle. You play so beautifully. Thank you 🙏🏻
Shikantaza beautiful words!
Sooooo Beatiiiifulll//// sooo Dark! The Church! A feeling by human being! I Love Bach, my favorite composer ever!! Pretty pretty amazing!!
Kaian Santos Mine as well :)
Truly beautiful interpretation.
Francisco Galindo agree!
Oef this organ sound reminds me of the dark lost future of the human kind. Lost technology and landscapes . 10/10 bravo
Yet two years on, we are still here and striding towards a better, wildly more interesting future.
Hauntingly beautiful
Complimenti
What a beautiful-and old-fashioned-piece!
Beautiful!
Carolyn Clark yes!
Wonderful! Great sound, great piece, great interpretation! Tanks
Prachtige registratie, de muziek pakte me direct. Heel mooi, thanks
Wonderful total realization of the playing, of course. The "Noir" lighting of Dorien completes the magic!
Just beautiful
Alan Ferris true!
Echt geniale Organistin!
The NBS is a treasure to music preservation
I love what you guys are doing! This sounds great.
wonderful, thank you for sharing this beautiful sound
Grazie.
It is not god that made the music, it is the music that made god.
Thank you so much! A great interpretation.
Sehr stimmungsvoll👍 Am Abend abgehört...
Wonderful piece and playing.
Simply "Molto gracious"!
Mooi rustig stukje, Dorien ga zo door!
Bach: This is just an exercise piece. Us: An exercise in expressing the deepest human emotions!
C'est magnifique, merci beaucoup
Gratulation’s J.S.Bach playing !
Love this channel and this pieces, thanks Bach :,,v!!
Well, this piece describes 2020 quite correctly...
Excellent performance by Dorien Schouten. Since the NBS are Dutch, can they perhaps hear the influence of Jan Pieterszoon Sweelinck on this piece? His Fantasia Cromatica uses similar progressions to this piece. I don't know if Bach was familiar with his work, but its influence must certainly have filtered through the North German organ school.
I hear in the theme the first tones of 'Aus tiefer Not'. Maybe that's an second inspiration. And yes, Bach was indirect a student of Sweelinck.
Vind haar altijd zo'n schatje :)
6:32 so beautiful!
Bellísimo.
Love, love every bit of this. But I'm put off by the Picardy third at the end . . . as if there were some kind of constraints on the "darkness" of the piece that obligated finishing it with a major chord.
Prachtig!
Lovely.
Do I hear a beautiful and winsome *8' Hohlflöte* in the opening section?
Ah, there's nothing like playing the organ in a great and empty church.... Just me and the music.... Enough....
I thought it was a Quintadena 8', it has a very similar timber
And in the darkness too....... Just you, Bach, the music and God.....An enormous privilege.
@@gillianlander3708 Except I'd leave out the "and god" part....
This is fantastic!
Dolce interpretazione
This is a wonderful organ. Does anyone know if Hans Fagius recorded on it for his collection of Bach works?
AVESSIMO ancora in Italia una SOCIETÀ BACH
Pusty ciemny kościół, urywające się trochę bezładnie pasaże - niesamowite wrażenie robi to nagranie.
righteous!
❤❤❤
I have question: do you plan to record J.S. Bach: Violin Concerto No.1 In A Minor, BWV 1041 ? Because I would love to hear that at your chanel.
They plan on doing everything! Stay tuned.
We have actually recorded BWV 1041 this summer. The video is still in post-production, the release will probably be in the first half of 2020.
@@bach Oh great, I can not wait for it !
This feels like someone climbing a long flight of stairs toward heaven
That's what I picture when I listen to "Vor deinen Thron tret' ich hiermit". I think of stairs made of cloud leading up to the throne of God.
2:21 - 2:40
du lourd

stops?
Canzon detta “La Sebastiana”...😜 An hommage to Frescobaldi?
Absolutely. He knew and admired Frecobaldi.
It was like a pink floyd suite :3
who was your tutor?
Dorien studied at UDK Berlin with Leo van Doselaar ... that alone explains a lot ....
Beautiful piece, performance and registration (both organ-wise and video-wise). The piece reminds me of Anthoni van Noordt's Fantasia 2: ua-cam.com/video/4xSrSLZPDpw/v-deo.html
Girolamo Frescobaldi docet........
It's reminds me Beethoven - 7th Symphony - 2nd movement or smth similar...
This comes from Frescobaldi.
Chostakovitch concerto pour violoncelle
a strange sound - almost arabic. oops, for some reason I had it at quarter speed.
Was soll das?
Nice shallow key dip ;-} Yikes...
don,t like registation, needs some more bright sound,as long piece.
si tacuisses ....
I don't like the registration on this one , i suggest that you listen to Hans Fagius's interpretation of this piece
too slow, too dark ... funeral music !- sorry for Frescobaldi !
little slow too
Turn your own pages, lazy.
